  • This study is to compare characteristics of saccharification reactions applying to enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated fallen leaves for bio-ethanol production. It experimented pretreatment of acid, alkaline in the chemical. This experiment includes preteatment of acid and alkaline in chemical, soaking, shaking and autoclaving method, which were applied to biomass. In result, the glucose production from alkaline-NaOH method was 263 mg glucose/ g biomass comparing with them of acid-HCl method. Thus, alkaline-NaOH method is superior than the acid-HCl method for chemical preteatment of fallen leaves. Also, when various chemical treatments were compared, they were all. Based on the results of this study, we found that leaves, one of biomass, are possible in pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis process, and they are likely to affect bio-ethanol production in the future.

  • Biolgical activated carbon (BAC) processes are known to effectively remove organic pollutants in raw water, and biomass and attached bacterial species play an important role in removing process. In the present study, changes of bacterial biomass in granular activated carbon (GAC) process according to the depth and operating period were investigated. In addition, changes of bacterial biomass were also confirmed after UV exposure prior to the GAC process. Results from this this study showed that the bacterial biomass was decreased dependently according to the depth of GAC process. In case of UV pre-treatment, the bacterial biomass was declined significantly over the period of operation. However, changes in bacterial community were not shown during operation period without UV pre-treatment process. In conclusion, findings from this study may provide the useful information about the management of BAC process.

  • This research is focused on coagulation and sand filtration process as a pretreatment of RO seawater desalination. RO systems require sufficient and reliable pretreatment process to produce superior quality of RO feedwater that can mitigate RO membrane fouling. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of coagulation and filtration process under various experimental conditions including different coagulant dose, flocculation mixing intensity and time, turbidity, and filtration rate. The experimental results showed that the optimum pretreatment conditions resulting in lower SDI value suitable for RO feedwater were coagulation pH 6.5, raw water turbidity greater than 4 NTU, and media bed depth greater than 550 mm. However, flocculation mixing intensity, coagulant dose, and filtration rate relatively affected little on the filtration efficiency.

  • In this study, two pretreatment methods were used to improve the sinterability of zirconium diboride ($ZrB_2$). As a mechanical treatment, as-received $ZrB_2$ powder was crushed using SPEX mill from an average size of $2.61{\mu}m$ to $0.35{\mu}m$. As a chemical treatment, oxygen contents of $ZrB_2$ powder were decreased from 4.20 wt% to 2.22 wt% using a dilute hydrofluoric solution. The relative density of sintered $ZrB_2$ increased with decreasing particle size and oxygen contents. But it is considered that particle size is more effective than oxygen contents for $ZrB_2$ densification. Through the two pretreatment processes, we produced sintered $ZrB_2$ ceramic with a full density without sintering additives. The sinterability of $ZrB_2$ was improved by using mechanical and chemical pretreatment methods.

  • Reliable monitoring and diagnosis of industrial processes is quite important for in terms of quality and safety. The goal of fault diagnosis is to find process variables responsible for causing specific abnormalities of the process. This work presents a classification-based diagnostic scheme based on nonlinear representation of process data. The use of a nonlinear kernel technique is able to reduce the size of the data considered and provides efficient and reliable representation of the measurement data. As a filtering stage a preprocessing is performed to eliminate unwanted parts of the data with enhanced performance. The case study of an industrial batch process has shown that the performance of the scheme outperformed other methods. In addition, the use of a nonlinear representation technique and filtering improved the diagnosis performance in the case study.

  • This is to study the effects of various pretreatment methods of agricultural residue, corn stover, and to compare the feature and pros and cons of each method including dilute sulfuric acid (DSA), soaking in aqueous ammonia (SAA), and ammonia recycle percolation (ARP). In order to convert corn stover to ethanol, various pretreatments followed by simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) were tested and evaluated in terms of ethanol yield. With 3%, w/w of glucan loading using ARP-, DSA-, and SAA-treated solids, SSCFs using recombinant E. coli strain (ATCC$^{(R)}$ 55124) with commercial enzymes (15 FPU of Spezyme CP/g-glucan and 30 CBU/g-glucan enzyme loading) were tested. In the SSCF tests, 87, 90, and 78% of theoretical maximum ethanol yield were observed using ARP-, DSA-, and SAA-treated solids, respectively, which were 69, 58, and 74% on the basis of total carbohydrates (glucan + xylan) in the untreated corn stover. Ethanol yield of SAA-treated solid was higher than those of ARP- and DSA-treated solids. In addition, SSCF test using treated solids plus pretreated hydrolysate indicated that the DSA-treated hydrolysate showed the strongest inhibition effect on the KO11 strain, whereas the ARP-treated hydrolysate was found to have the second strongest inhibition effect. Bioconversion scheme using SAA pretreatment and SSCF can make the downstream process simple, which is suggested to produce ethanol economically because utilization of hemicellulose in the hydrolysate is not necessary.

  • Organosolv pretreatment is the process to frationation of lignocellulosic feedstocks to enhancement of enzymatic hydrolysis. This process has advantages that organic solvents are always easy to recover by distillation and recycled for pretreatment. The chemical recovery in organosolv pretreatment can isolate lignin as a solid material and carbohydrates as fermentable sugars. For the economic considerations, using of low-molecular-weight alcohols such as ethanol and methanol have been favored. When acid catalysts are added in organic solvent, the rate of delignification could be increased. Mineral acids (hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid) are good catalysts to accelerate delignification and xylan degradation. In this study, the biomass was pretreated using 40~50 wt% ethanol at $170{\sim}180^{\circ}C$ during 20~60 min. As a results, the enzymatic digestibility of 2-stage pretreatment of rigida using 50 wt% ethanol at $180^{\circ}C$ was 40.6% but that of 1-stage pretreatment was 55.4% on same conditions, therefore it is shown that the pretreatment using mixture of the organosolv and catalyst was effective than using them separately.

  • Ammonia circulation reactor (ACR) was devised for the effective pretreatment of corn stover. This method is designed to circulate aqueous ammonia continuously so that it can reduce the chemical and water consumption during pretreatment. In this study, ammonia pretreatment with various reaction conditions such as reaction time (4~12 hour), temperature ($60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), and solid:liquid ratio (1:3~1:8) was tested. Chemical compositions including solid remaining after reaction, lignin and carbohydrates were analyzed and enzymatic digestibility was also measured. It was observed that as reaction conditions become more severe, lignin removal was significantly affected, which was in the range of 47.6~70.6%. On the other hands, glucan and xylan losses were not substantial as compared to that of lignin. At all tested conditions, the glucan loss was not changed substantially, which was between 4.7% and 15.2%, while the xylan loss varied, which was between 7.4% and 25.8%. With (15 FPU-GC220+30 CBU)/g-glucan of enzyme loading, corn stover treated using ammonia circulation reactor for 8~12 hours resulted in 90.1~94.5% of 72-h glucan digestibility, which was higher than 92.7% of $Avicel^{(R)}$-101. In addition, initial hydrolysis rate (at 24 hour) of this treated corn stover was 73.0~79.4%, which was shown to be much faster than 69.5% of $Avicel^{(R)}$-101. As reaction time increased, more lignin removal and it was assumed that the enhanced enzymatic digestibility of treated biomass was attributed to the lignin removal.

  • The purpose of this study was to effectively produce the biosugar from cell wall of lipid extracted microalgae (LEA) by using microwave-assisted pretreatment without enzymatic hydrolysis process. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimization of microwave-assisted pretreatment conditions for the production of biosugar based on enzyme-free process from LEA. Microwave power (198~702 W), extraction time (39~241 sec), and sulfuric acid (0~1.0 mol) were used as independent variables for central composite design (CCD) in order to predict optimum pretreatment conditions. It was noted that the pretreatment variables that affect the production of glucose (C6) and xylose (C5) significantly have been identified as the microwave power and extraction time. Additionally, the increase in microwave power and time had led to an increase in biosugar production. The superimposed contour plot for maximizing dependent variables showed the maximum C6 (hexose) and C5 (pentose) yields of 92.7 and 74.5% were estimated by the predicted model under pretreatment condition of 700 w, 185.7 sec, and 0.48 mol, and the yields of C6 and C5 were confirmed as 94.2 and 71.8% by experimental validation, respectively. This study showed that microwave-assisted pretreatment under low temperature below $100^{\circ}C$ with short pretreatment time was verified to be an effective enzyme free pretreatment process for the production of biosugar from LEA compared to conventional pretreatment methods.

  • The objectives of this research are to investigate the mechanism of coagulation affecting UF and find out the optimum conditions of the combined of coagulation with UF membrane filtration for NOM removal. During the mixing period, substantial changes in particle size distribution occurred under rapid and slow mixing condition due to the simultaneous formation of microflocs and NOM precipitates. Therefore, combined pretreatment using coagulation (both rapid mixing and slow mixing) improved dissolved removal efficiency. Also, for combined coagulation to membrane process, flux reduction rate showed lower than only UF process. The rate of flux decline for the hydrophobic membrane was considerably greater than for the hydrophilic membrane. Applying coagulation process before membrane filtration showed not only reducing membrane fouling, but also improving the removal of dissolved organic materials that might otherwise not be removed by the membrane.
