  • RF and microwave power is a basic quantity in electromagnetic metrology which linked directly to major electro-magnetic quantities such as attenuation, RF voltage, antenna characteristics and field strength. This paper deals with a power meter and power sensor with associated theory for RF and microwave power measurement. We study the theory and the key aspects in design of a 3.5 mm coaxial microcalorimeter which works from 50 MHz to 26.5 GHz as a primary microwave power standard.

  • The MTF(modulation transfer function) is one of parameters to evaluate the performance of imaging systems. Also, it can be used to restore information that is lost by a harsh space environment (radioactivity, extreme cold/heat condition and electromagnetic field etc.), atmospheric effects and falloff of system performance etc. This paper evaluated the MTF values of images taken by DubaiSat-1 satellite which was launched in 2009 by EIAST(Emirates Institute for Advanced Science and Technology) and Satrec Initiative. Generally, the MTF was assessed using various methods such as a point source method and a knife-edge method. This paper used the slanted-edge method. The slantededge method is the ISO 12233 standard for the MTF measurement of electronic still-picture cameras. The method is adapted to estimate the MTF values of line-scanning telescopes. After assessing the MTF, we performed the MTF compensation by generating a MTF convolution kernel based on the PSF(point spread function) with image denoising to enhance the image quality.

  • This paper presents research for non-contact gesture recognition system using EPS(Electronic Potential Sensor) for measuring the human body of electromagnetic fields. It implemented a signal acquisition and signal processing system for designing a system suitable for motion recognition using the data coming from the sensors. we transform AC-type data into DC-type data by applying a 10Hz LPF considering H/W sampling rate. in addition, we extract 2-dimensional movement information by taking difference value between two cross-diagonal deployed sensor.

  • In this paper, the measurement system of speed and distance of vehicles using laser is implemented and verified through the outdoor test. The implemented system consists of a laser module and a control/speed-computation module. The Former is composed of a optics part, a transmit/receive part, and a LDC(Laser Detection and Counter), and the latter is a control part that controls the laser module and a speed computation part that calculates velocity of vehicles using a microcontroller. The algorithm to compute speed has been developed to consider characteristics of laser and surrounding conditions. The implemented system has been tested and verified on the high way, and the result shows stability of the system and accuracy of the algorithm.

  • Instrument drift is caused by the passage of time, environmental changes, normal wear and tear, debris buildup, sudden shock, vibrations, electromagnetic fields, and improper use. Since it is inappropriate to directly determine the change of the output value as drift during the limited test period, a new algorithm that reflects both zero drift and span drift by giving changes over time to the calibration method of the instrument was proposed. The temperature drift was calculated to be 0.49% for about 60 minutes at 1-minute intervals in the nine-step constant temperature environment through the warming and cooling process.

  • In this paper we study the performance test items and improvement plans of surge protective devices for low-voltage power circuits used in railway system. Above of all, the sources of electromagnetic interference in railway system are researched. And then we compared domestic railway standard with IEC and IEEE standards far the test items and methodologies of surge protective devices. Through the investigations, we found that the domestic standard is behind in the number of test items and methods on surge protective devices. As the countermeasures, we suggest removing component tests of surge protective devices, separating standards for power and signal standards, and using international surge waveform. In applying to domestic railway surge protective devices, surge limiting voltage measuring and surge endurance tests by international standard methods are good result.

  • As the structures of the high performance electronic equipments and devices recently become more complex, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and compatibility (EMC) have been very essential for commercial and military purposes. Thus, sensitive electrical devices and densely packed systems need to be protected from electromagnetic wave. In this research, glass fabric/epoxy composites containing conductive multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) and carbon fiber/epoxy composites as electrical shielding materials were fabricated and electrical properties of the composites were measured. The concerning frequency band is from 300 MHz to 1 GHz. The performances of composite shielding enclosures were predicted using electromagnetic wave 3-D simulation tool, CST Microwave Studio. The shielding enclosure made of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were fabricated and the shielding effectiveness (SE) was measured in the anechoic chamber.

  • Recently, unmanned aircraft EM (electromagnetic) survey based on ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has been widely utilized because of the efficiency in regional survey. We performed the theoretical study on the unmanned airship EM system developed by KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral resources) as part of the practical application of unmanned aircraft EM survey. Since this system has different configurations of transmitting and receiving loops compared to the conventional aircraft EM systems, a new technique is required for the appropriate interpretation of measured responses. Therefore, we proposed a method to calculate the EM field for the arbitrary shaped transmitter and verified its validity through the comparison with analytic solution for circular loop. In addition, to simulate the magnetic responses by three-dimensionally (3D) distributed anomalies, we have adapted our algorithm to 3D frequency-domain EM modeling algorithm based on the edge-FEM (finite element method). Though the analysis on magnetic field responses from a subsurface anomaly, it was found that the response decreases as the depth of the anomaly increases or the flight altitude increases. Also, it was confirmed that the response became smaller as the resistivity of the anomaly increases. However, a nonlinear trend of the out-of-phase component is shown depending on the depth of the anomaly and the used frequency, that makes it difficult to apply simple analysis based on the mapping of the magnitude of the responses and can cause the non-uniqueness problem in calculating the apparent resistivity. Thus, it is a prerequisite to analyze the appropriate frequency band and flight altitude considering the purpose of the survey and the site conditions when conducting a survey using the unmanned aircraft EM system.
