In order to explain geomorphological characteristics of the Korean Peninsula, it is necessary to understand the spatial distribution of tectonic movements and its causes. Even though geomorphological elements which might have been formed by tectonic movements(e.g. tilted overall landform, erosion surface, river terrace, marine terraces, etc.) have long been considered as main geomorphological research topics in Korea, the knowledge on the spatial distribution of tectonic movement is still limited. This research aims to identify the spatial distributions of tectonic movement via sequential analyses of Digital Elevation Model(DEM). This paper first developed a set of terrain analysis techniques derived from theoretical interrelationships between tectonic uplifts and landsurface denudation processes. The terrain analyses used in this research assume that elevations along major drainage basin divides might preserve original landsurfaces(psuedo-landsuface) that were formed by tectonic movement with relatively little influence by denudation processes. Psuedo-landsurfaces derived from a DEM show clear spatial distribution patterns with distinct directional alignments. Lines connecting psuedo-landsufaces in a certain direction are defined as psuedo-landsurface axes, which are again categorized into two groups: the first is uplift psuedo-landsurface axes that indicate the axis of landmass uplift; and the second is denudational psuedo-landsurface axes that cross step-shaped pusedo-landsurfaces formed via surface denudation. In total, 13 axes of pusedo-landsurface are identified in the Korean Peninsula, which show distinct direction, length, and relative uplift rate. Judging from the distribution of psudo-landsurfaces and their axes, it is concluded that the Korean Peninsula ran be divided into four tectonic regions, which are named as the Northern Tectonic Region, Center Tectonic Region, Southern Tectonic Region, and East Sea Tectonic Region, respectively. The Northern Tectonic Region had experienced a regional uplift centered at the Kaema plateau, and the rate of uplift gradually decreased toward southern, western and eastern directions. The Center Tectonic Region shows an arch-shaped uplift. Its uplift rate is the highest along the East Sea and the rate decreases towards the Yellow sea. The Southern Tectonic Region shows an asymmetric uplift centered a line connecting Dukyu and Jiri Mountains in the middle of the region. The eastern side of the Southern Regions shows higher uplift rate than that of the western side. The East Sea Tectonic Region includes south-eastern coastal area of the peninsula and Gilju-Myeongchun Jigudae, which shows relatively recent tectonic movements in Korea. Since this research visualizes the spatial heterogeneity of long-term tenonic movement in the Korean peninsula, this would provide valuable basic information on long-term and regional differences of geomorphological evolutionary processes and regional geomorphological differences of the Korean Peninsula.

In children, dental anxiety of dental treatment has been recognized as a source of problems in patient man agement for many years. Dental anxiety can be causes of negative cooperation, cancel and avoid of dental treatment. Therefore, dentist and dental team should recognize of child's dental anxiety as early as possible and manage appropriately. In previous studies, it is reported that parental dental anxiety affect dental anxiety and cooperation of their child. And it is parental decision which results in a child's visit to the dentist, rather than a child's decision in most cases. Therefore, it is important to identify the relationship of dental anxiety between child and parent. We estimated child's dental anxiety before dental treatment using Venham Picture Scale that is useful even a very young child and parental dental anxiety using Corah's dental anxiety scale. Then, two values above were compared. Child's cooperation, temperament, sex, age, parental education were estimated and compared with dental anxiety, too. The results were as follows: 1. There are positive relationship of dental anxiety between child and parent with the correlation analysis(P<0.02). 2. There are negative relationship of child's dental anxiety and child's cooperation with the correlation and regression analysis(P<0.001). 3. Low anxiety group has lower mean value of four temperament item with the Student's t-test. But, there is no statistical differences(P>0.1). 4. Girl and younger group have higher mean value of dental anxiety than boy and older group with the Student's t-test(P<0.001). 5. Low educated parents have higher mean value of dental anxiety than high educated parents with the Student's t-test(P>0.1).
Purpose : The hematologic change during the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL) is critical as a prognostic determinant and a variable to determine the dose of chemotherapeutic agents. It is known that the dose of vincristine used in the maintenance phase of ALL is small enough to increase the count of platelet. To investigate the change of platelet count according to the vincristine administration in maintenance phase of ALL chemotherapy, we performed this study. Methods : Eleven patients eligible under the criteria of Children's Cancer Study Group(CCG)-1882 and who had completed chemotherapy were enrolled in this study. The count of platelets before vincristine administration was compared with those of vincristine administration 1, 2 and 3 weeks after the early and last periods of maintenance phases. The platelet count before vincristine administration was defined as 100 percent and that after vincristine were compared. In addition, we tentatively defined an enhancing effect of vincristine as positive when the relative count was more than 120 percent. Results : Platelet count did not differ according to the early and last periods of maintenance phase. Platelet count at first week after vincristine administration increased more significantly than that before vincristine in early and last periods. There was an enhancing effect in 10(90.9 percent) of 11 patients after 1 week vincristine administration both in the early and last periods of the maintenance phase. Conclusion : Vincristine, used in ALL maintenance phases as a low dose, increased platelet count 1 week after administration. The increased platelet count resumed to the previous level 2-3 weeks later. However, the thrombocytosis observed in the maintenance phase by vincristine was not high enough to induce thrombosis. In addition, vincristine is known to reduce the activity of platelets. Therefore, the risk of thrombosis in the maintenance phase of ALL chemotherapy would be low.

The marine bacterial flora of seawater at Masan Bay located in southern part of Korea was investigated to provide basic information about the origin of red tides in this area. The samples were collected at 5 sampling stations (see fig.1) established once a month from July 1985 to June 1986. The results are summerized as follows: 1. Two hundred and ninety one strains of marine bacteria among 299 strains isolated were identified from 156 samples(150 seawater samples and 6 mud samples) collected in the study area. 2. During the study period, the dissolved oxygen ranged from 2.1 to 6.3 ml/l; temperature of surface seawater ranged from 4.6 to $30.1^{\circ}C$; phosphate, silicate and nitrite ranged from 1.6 to 5.6 ${mu}g-at/l$, 327.27 to 3798.38 ${mu}g-at/l$, and 1.09 to 5.5 ${mu}g-at/l$, respectively. 3. Pseudomonas spp. were the most dominant bacterial species before red tides, Ancinetobacter spp. and Flavobacterium spp. during red tides, and Flavobacterium spp., Vibrio spp. and Acinetobacter spp. after red tides. 4. Viable counts marine bacterial flora ranged $10^4{\sim}10^8cell/ml$, and the most abundant viable counts of marine bacteria occured during red tides ($10^7{\sim}10^8cell/ml$).
This article considers the experimental foundations of geographical phenomena for the distribution of lodging houses and the development of lodging Information Systems in Shin-Chon Area. This system allows the rural students to find their lodging houses conveniently. We examine the geographical reality of lodging houses in Shin-chon area and explores the lodging information system, reflecting how students select the lodging houses. Criteria for selection of lodging houses are travel time to school, interior facilities, rent fee, members, owners of lodging houses, which are collected by field swvey. The lodging information system is built in integration of Visual Basic with spatial data which are created in Mapinfo and Arcview through MapObject, component GIS software. This system provide query tools to efficiently investigate data as well as interactive map display. Also it displays the characteristics of a selected lodging houses using the identify tool on the map.
Background : Identification of the histologic cell type of lung cancer is important because it is related to the treatment modality and prognosis. Currently, many diagnostic methods are used to determine the cell type. We have studied to evaluate the histologic accuracy of each diagnostic methods in lung cancer. Method : 168 cases were analysed retrospectively, who underwent curative thoracotomy for lung cancer in Seoul National University Hospital from January, 1994 to February, 1997. Sputum cytology, percutaneous needle aspiration(PCNA), percutaneous needle biopsy(PCNB), bronchial washing cytology and flexible bronchoscopic biopsy were evaluated respectively. The k coefficient was applied to evaluate the degree of concordance between the histologic diagnosis obtained by each methods and the one derived from thoracotomy. Results : The k value in sputum cytology was 0.86. In the 34 cases with squamous cell carcinoma(SQ), 32 cases were finally diagnosed as having such by thoracotomy. 7 of the 8 cases with adenocarcinoma(AD) turned out to have the same. The k value in PCNA was 0.51. In the 31 cases with SQ, only 14 cases were finally diagnosed as having such. All of the 3 cases with small cell carcinoma(SC) turned out to have the same. The k value in PCNB was 0.77. The diagnosis was correct in 13 of the 16 patients with SQ and in 30 of the 32 cases with AD. The k value in bronchial washing cytology was 1.0. In all of the 29 cases with SQ and all of the 7 cases with AD, the diagnosis was correct. The k value in flexible bronchoscopic biopsy was 0.77. The diagnosis was correct in 51 of the 52 cases with SQ and in 1 of the 2 cases with SC. Conclusion : The concordance rate with the final histologic diagnosis in sputum cytology, PCNB, bronchial washing cytology and flexible bronchoscopic biopsy were excellent ($k{\geq}0.75$), while that in PCNA was fair (k=0.53). Because PCNA showed lower concordance rate than other diagnostic methods, PCNA is recommended to perform with PCNB.

This study was conducted to examine effect dietary protein and calcium levels on calcium metabolism of the rat. Weaned 6-week old male rats were divided into 4 groups and were fed experimental diets for six weeks. Experimental groups were HPNC group-high protein normal calcium (protein: 400 g/kg diet, calcium: 0.5%), HPLC group-high protein low calcium (protein: 400 g/kg diet, calcium: 0.1%), NPNC group-normal protein normal calcium (protein: 200 g/diet, calcium: 0.5%), NPLC group-normal protein low calcium (protein: 200 g/diet, calcium: 0.1%). The calcium excretion in urine was higher in high protein group than in normal protein group, and it was highest in HPLC group. The activation of alkaline phophatase had a tendency to low in normal calcium group, and the concentration of parathyroid hormone (PTH) was the lowest in HPLC group. The deoxypyridinoline (DPD) concentration of urine was investigated as the highest in HPLC group and it was significantly lower in HPNC group that consumed normal calcium. The bone density of the femur was the highest in NPNC group and the lowest in NPLC group. As the results of this study, calcium excretion in urine and DPD density were the highest and the bone density was the lowest in HPLC group. It may suggest that the deficiency of calcium causes adversely effect in calcium metabolism upon consuming high protein diet. Therefore, it should be emphasized to consume enough calcium to prevent the hindrance of skeletal metabolism caused by deficiency of calcium upon consuming high protein diet.
Soft tissue profile is a critical area of interest in the development of an orthodontic treatment and diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to determine the facial profile preference of diversified group and to investigate the relationship between most Preferred facial Profile and existing soft tissue reference lines. A survey instrument of constructed facial silhouettes was evaluated by 894 lay person. The silhouettes had varied nose, lips, chin and soft tissue subnasale point. Seven sets of facial type were computer-generated by an orthodontist to represent distinct facial types. The varied facial profiles were graded on the basis of most preferred to least preferred. Every facial profile were measured by soft tissue reference lines(Ricketts E-line, Burstone B-line) to observe the most preferred facial profile. The results as follows: 1. In reliability test, the childhood group showed lower value than other groups, which means that this group has no concern on facial profile preference. 2. It appears that sexual and age difference made no significant difference in selecting the profile 3. An agreement to least preferred facial profile was higher than an agreement to most preferred facial profile. 4. Coefficient of concordance (Kendall W) was higher in the twentieth group. It means that a profile preference of the twentieth is distinct. 5. A lip protrusion (to Ricketts E-line and Burstone B-line) of most preferred facial profile was similar to measurements of previous study that investigate skeletal and soft tissue of esthetic facial profile of young Korean. So these reference lines can be used valuably in clinics. 6. Profile of excessive lip protrusion or retrusion to E-line & B-line was least preferred. 7. Most preferred profile of all respondents group was straight profile. Profile that showing convex profile was not pre(erred and the least preferred profile was concave profile.

The aim of a school attendance policy (SAP) is to ensure breakfast time for school-aged adolescents. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of SAP on dietary behavior, particularly breakfast consumption, among adolescent middle school students (n=426) in the Ansan area of Gyeonggi-do. After implementation of the SAP, the response rates for eating breakfast every-day among boys (P>0.05) and girls (P<0.05) slightly increased by 44.6% and 35.8%, respectively, compared to before the SAP. Further, the degree of satisfaction with breakfast increased among both boys ('satisfied' and 'strongly satisfied'; 32.4% and 21.6%, respectively) (P<0.01) and girls ('satisfied' and 'strongly satisfied'; 32.8% and 14.2%, respectively) (P<0.001) compared to before the SAP. Moreover, boys (56.8%) and girls (53.9%) were aware that the SAP increased breakfast-eating frequency. Increases in deep sleep as a result of the SAP were high in both boys (39.2%) and girls (47.1%), and sleeping hours among boys (P<0.05) and girls (P<0.01) increased compared to before the SAP. The respondents were aware of the positive effects on physical function such as reduction of physical fatigue (boys 40.1%, girls 38.2%) and improvement of physical health (boys 36.5%, girls 32.8%). Thus, systematic and sustained political support at the national level is required to encourage healthy breakfast eating and physical activity in middle school students.

As of August 2019, there were 3,823 vessels under 30 tons that could be included in the category of small vessels; these account for 42.5 % of the 9,001 registered vessels in Korea. The problem is that many small vessel seafarers face many problems such as an board communication disconnection, difficulties in communication in maritime license interviews, or education related to maritime training using a large number of nonstandard terms, which are derived from foreign languages; this is leading to a decline the job skills of small vessel seafarers. Therefore, in this study, we closely analyzed the terminology of small vessel seafarers and proposed a standardization plan. In the terminology analysis, the preliminary terms of the maritime license interview and the high-frequency terms of the small vessel educational textbook were identified and the corresponding nonstandard terms were examined. Based on a survey, an expert meeting was held and incorrect Japanese notation, English notation, and the standard language for key terms were presented to analyze which questionnaire was most familiar. The ratio of the use of standard words is relatively high in the case of nautical terms, however, the wrong Japanese notation is used more for engine terms; the analysis results by age and tonnage also generally use the Japanese notation and the use frequency of English notation was determined to be low. Based on this, short- and long-term plans for the use of standard words by small vessel seafarers were proposed, including the production of a standard language dictionary for terms used by these seafarers, a promotion of the importance of using standard terms, active education through educational institutions, and the systematic preparation and implementation of Korean-language education for foreign sailors.
