  • Rotating flow of a stratified fluid contained in a circular cylinder with unstable temperature gradient imposed on the side wall of it has been numerically studied. The temperatures at the endwall disks are constant. The top disk of the container is coider than that of the bottob disk, as much as the temperature difference n${\Delta}$T, (0${\leq}$n${\leq}$3). Flows in the vessel are driven by an impulsive rotation of the hot bottom disk with respect to the central axis of the cylinder. Flow details have been acquired. For this flow, the principal balance in the interior core is characterized by a relationship between the radial temperature gradient and the vertical shear in the azimuthal velocity. As the buoyancy effect becomes appreciable, larger portions of the meridional fluid transport are long-circuit from the bottom disk to the interior region via the side wall.

  • Pressure drops of two-phase flow in a pipe according to particle shapes have been calculated and analyzed. The numerical analysis for 3 cases of Reynolds number has been conducted for each particle shape. In case of the cylinder shape, the particles had been assumed to be randomly distributed for each Reynolds number. The results have been averaged and compared to those of the case of the ball shape. Additionally, pressure drops of ball and cylinder shapes has been compared to the result of Ergun's equation.

  • During landing approach, an airplane could experience dynamic unstable motion by the combination of a gust and elevator control to cancel the disturbances. This situation is dangerous and could lead to a loss of an airplane. In this paper, numerical analysis was used to study the effect of pitch oscillating 2-D high lift devices in a landing condition. Experimental data on a pitching naca0012 airfoil was used for code validation. Dynamic characteristics of an airfoil, single slotted flap for mid-class passenger aircraft were analyzed. Unsteady Navier-Stokes analysis was performed with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model for separation dominant low speed flow. As a result, flow hysteresis of a flapped airfoil was more complex than that of an oscillating airfoil. So, dynamic analysis of a flap in a landing condition is very important for operational safety.

  • In the present study, CFD methods are applied in the design procedure of rotor blades in a axial-flow fan and the aerodynamic performances are predicted. The blade profiles initially determined by the free vortex method and empirical formula are modified to match the target value of the rotor work load through the analysis of 3D Navier-Stokes solver. The corrected shapes of the rotor blade showed the increase of the efficiency and the pressure simultaneously.

  • A critical problem in the integration of stores into new and existing aircraft is the safe separation of the stores from the aircraft at a variety of flight conditions representative of the aircraft flight regime. Typically, the certification of a particular store/aircraft/flight condition combination is accomplished by a flight test. Flight tests are very expensive and do expose the pilot and aircraft to a certain amount of risk. Wind tunnel testing, although less expensive than flight testing, is still expensive. Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) has held out the promise of alleviating expensive and risk by simulating weapons separation computationally. The forces and moments on a store at carriage and at various points in the flow field of te aircraft can be computed using CFD applied to the full aircraft and store geometry. This study needs full dynamic characteristics study and flow analysis for securing store separation safety. Present study performs dynamic simulation of store separation with flow analysis using Chimera grid scheme which is usually used for moving simulations.

  • Numerical analysis of the flowfield around a 50-meter class airship is performed to determine the optimal position for the airspeed probe installation. The turbulent flow around the hull with gondola is analyzed to examine the characteristics of the data measured by the probe attached to the gondola, and they turned out to show the nonlinear relation between the freestream and measured angles of attack and be influenced by the Reynolds number. New position of the hull nose was proposed and the effect of various factors on the flowfield around the nose was also examined. The analysis with a panel method showed that the effect of empennage was negligible, and the effect of gondola and boundary layer thickness had also little impact. It was shown that the freestream angle of attack would be the only independent variable for the probe position around the hull nose in constructing the calibration matrix.

  • In this study, fluid/structure coupled analyses have been conducted for 3-D stator and rotor configuration. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate fluid/structure responses of general stator-rotor configurations. To solve the fluid/structure coupled problems, fluid domains are modeled using the structural grid system with dynamic moving and local deforming techniques. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with Spalart-Allmaras(S-A) and SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3-D turbine blades for fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problems. Detailed fluid/structure analysis responses for stator-rotor interaction flow conditions are presented to show the physical performance and flow characteristics.

  • Recently, the importance and necessity of engineering analysis has shown a steady growth. However, researchers working in small and medium enterprises know little about the usefulness of engineering analysis and suffer from lack of technical knowledge. Axial fan is air fluid machinery in various fields of industry such as automobile, electric appliance, and heavy machinery. It is also a time and budget consuming equipment to develop the axial fan through physical experiments. In order to overcome this problem, we have designed and developed a web-base automated simulator for axial fan's fluid analysis using supercomputer. Automated simulator means that all of processes for engineering analysis including pre-process, solving, and post-process can be performed automatically without user intervention after transferring fan model(CAD files) made by user. After executing the simulator with some parameters, user can receive the report including pressure P and flow rate Q. In this paper, we introduce the architecture of our easy and efficient automated engineering analysis simulator, related techniques and result of development.

  • Analysis of fluid-structure interaction for two nearby underwater vehicles immersed in the sea is quite challenging because simulation of flow around them is very difficult due to the complexity of underwater vehicle shapes. The conventional approach using body-fitted or unstructured grids demands much time in dynamic grid generation, and yields slow convergence of solution. Since an analysis of fluid-structure interaction must be based on accurate simulation results, a more efficient way of simulating flow around underwater vehicles, without sacrificing accuracy, is desirable. An immersed boundary method facilitates implementation of complicated underwater-vehicle shapes on a Cartesian grid system. An LES modeling is also incorporated to resolve turbulent eddies. In this paper, we will demonstrate the effectiveness of the immersed boundary method we adopted, by presenting the simulation results on the flow around a modeled high-speed underwater vehicle interacting with a modeled low-speed one.
