  • In this study, the characteristics of water treatment mixer with various propeller profiles are numerically invesitgated. The computation was conducted by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured tetrahedral elements with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. It was found that the spreading angle and swirl magnitude of the jet are important factors for the mixer efficiency, since they clearly characterize the propeller and the frontal surface area of the propeller but not so much affected by the skew angle if it exceeds 30 degrees. The case1 and case2 models are found to show the best propeller efficiency. The case2 with low blade angle, however, requires the lowest power input for the same discharge capacity as the case1.

  • An ejector is a fluid transportation device that operates based on the principle that a high-pressure fluid is spouted through a driving pipe and the pressure of a low-pressure fluid is increased through exchange of momentum with a low-pressure gas. Steam-steam ejectors have been widely used for suction, mixture, and dehydration. They can be easily used in places where fluid moves and expenses are reasonable. In addition, such ejectors are a semi-permanent fluid device that requires little maintenance. In this study, we present an optimized design by analyzing what cannot be obtained through experiments in order to improve the device performance, analyze general contents of a flow by acquiring exact test data on specific and interpretative areas using more advanced experimental techniques, and identify the flow characteristics of a branch pipe by examining the validity of experiments using computer hydrodynamics simulations.

  • This study is related with the fire risk assessment for fire area at nuclear power plant by use of FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) that is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of fire-driven fluid flow. The major purpose of this research is to analyze the sensitivity of the fire modeling when the heat release rate that is an important input variable is changed as well as when the grid size that is a critical factor of the fire model is modified. The result is presented at the conclusion with some comments for CFD model application.

  • In this paper, the flow performance and aero-acoustic noise generated by the target centrifugal fan system were investigated numerically and experimentally. Also, the numerical method for Computational Aero-Acoustics were evaluated by comparing each method. To analyze the performance of the centrifugal fan experimentally, the acoustic power level was measured in the semi-anechoic chamber using microphones, and the active frequency range for the noise performance was identified and that frequency range was applied for Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA) techniques as sampling frequency. Then, Navier-Stokes equation and the Ffowcs Williams&Hawking equations were used to analyze the flow and sound power numerically, respectively, and a virtual acoustic radiation plane was designed and used for the implementation of the sound field. The accuracy and numerical characteristics of the numerical methods were validated by comparing simulated acoustic power levels with acoustic power levels measured.

  • Most of domestic shipyards are located at coastal regions which are affected by typhoons nearly every year. For effectiveness of shipbuilding, shipyards contain many facilities which are light-weighted and affected dominantly by wind. In the present paper, we analyze various wind fields over a shipyard including surrounding topology and structures to evaluate the structural safety of the facilities posed in the strong wind. Extreme wind speed for a study region was estimated by typhoon Monte Carlo simulation and then used for inlet wind speed for CFD analysis for wind load on the facilities. Considering geometrical wind effects, we assess the surface pressure of the elements as the pressure factor, the ratio of surface pressure to dynamic pressure. The results show that the simulated wind speed is greater than the design wind speed for the some facilities because of the shipyard's geometry. It also shows that surrounding topography in coastal area is needed to be considered and adjustment for design wind speed at wind load standard application is necessary for mooring ship and industry facilities.

  • When a plume flow exhausted from a lunar lander descent engine impinges on the lunar surface, regolith particles on the lunar surface will be dispersed due to a plume-surface interaction. If the dispersed particles collide with the lunar lander, some adverse effects such as a performance degradation can be caused. Thus, this study tried to predict the plume flow behaviors using the CFD methods. A nozzle inside region was analyzed by a continuum flow model based on the Navier-Stokes equations while the plume behaviors of the outside nozzle was performed by comparing and analyzing the individual results using the continuum flow model and the DSMC method. As a result, it was possible to establish an optimum procedure of the plume analysis for the lunar lander descent engine in the vacuum condition. In the future, it is expected to utilize the present results for the development of the Korean lunar lander.

  • This study examined the effects of topography and buildings around the automated synoptic observing system (ASOS) on the observation environment of air temperatures and wind speeds and directions using a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model. For this, we selected 10 ASOSs operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. Based on the data observed at the ASOSs in August during the recent ten years, we established the initial and boundary conditions of the CFD model. We analyzed the temperature observation environment by comparing the temperature change ratios in the case considering the actual land-cover types with those assuming all land-cover types as grassland. The land-cover types around the ASOSs significantly affected the air temperature observation environment. The temperature change ratios were large at the ASOSs around which buildings and roads were dense. On the other hand, when all land covers were assumed as grassland, the temperature change ratios were small. Wind speeds and directions at the ASOSs were also significantly influenced by topography and buildings when their heights were higher or similar to the observation heights. Obstacles even located at a long distance affected the wind observation environments. The results in this study would be utilized for evaluating ASOS observation environments in the relocating or newly organizing steps.

  • Using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT, the present study investigated the thermal stratification behavior of Lyckebo storage in Sweden, which is the very first large-scale rock cavern for underground thermal energy storage. Heat transfer analysis was carried out for numerical cases with different temperatures of the surrounding rock mass in order to examine the effect of rock mass heating due to periodic storage and production of thermal energy on thermal stratification and heat loss. The change of thermal stratification with respect to time was quantitatively examined based on an index of the degree of stratification. The results of numerical simulation showed that in the early operational stage where the surrounding rock mass was less heated, the stratification of stored thermal energy was rapidly degraded over time, but the degradation and heat loss tended to reduce as the surrounding rock mass was heated during a long period of operation.
