  • A small-scale reinforced earth wall was constructed in a laboratory to investigate the effect of wall rigidity and of construction sequence on the wall. A full continuous wall facing and a discrete wall facing were designed and constructed for tests. These two different facing systems should adapt different construction procedures due to their different facing shapes. The model wall was built with geo-grid reinforcement, sand, and facings on rigid surface. The model wall was instrumented with earth pressure gages, LVDTs, and strain gages. The experimental results have shown differences in wall behavior related to construction sequence and types of wall facing. It is found in this study that the reinforced earth wall built with full continuous facing is safer than the reinforced earth wall built with the discrete wall facing.

  • Application of the soil nailing method is continuously extended in maintaining stable excavations and slopes. Occasionally, however, ground anchor support system may not be used because of space limitations in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently adopted as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in an excavation zone of the existing weak subsoils. Pretensioning the soil nails then, could play important roles in reducing deformations mainly in an upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as improving local stability. In the present study, the analytical procedure and design technique are proposed to evaluate maximum pretension force and stability of the pretensioned soil nailing system. Also proposed are techniques to determine the required thickness of a shotcrete facing and to estimate probability of a failure against the punching shear. The predicted results are compared with the limited measurements obtained from the excavation site constructed by using the pretensioned soil nails. Based on the proposed procedure and technique, effects of the radius of a influence circle and dilatancy angle on the thickness of a shotcrete facing, bonded length and safety factors are analyzed. In addition, effects of the reduction of deformations expected by pretensioning of the soil nails are examined in detail throughout an illustrative example and FLAC$^{2D}$ program analysis.s.

  • In the present study, a method of quasi-three dimensional stability analysis is proposed for a systematic design of the GRS-RW(Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall) system based on the postulated three dimensional failure wedge. The proposed method could be applied to the analysis of the stability of both the straight-line and cove-shaped are. As with skew reinforcements. Maximum earth thrust expected to act on the rigid face wall is assumed to distribute along the depth, and wall displacements are predicted based on both the assumed compaction-induced earth pressures and one dimensional finite element method of analysis. For a verification of the procedure proposed in the present study, the predicted wall displacements are compared with chose obtained from the RMC tests in Canada and the FHWA tests in U.S.A. In these comparisons the wall displacements estimated by the methods of Christopher et at. and Chew & Mitchell are also included for further verification. Also, the predicted wall displacements for the convex-shaped zone reinforced with skew reinforcements are compared with those by $FLAC_{3D}$ program analyses. The assumed compaction-induced earth pressures evaluated on the basic of the proposed method of analysis are further compared with the measurements by the FHWA best wall. A parametric stduy is finally performed to investigate the effects of various design parameters for the stability of the GRS-RW system

  • Many steepened slopes have become increasingly advantageous because of the desire to increase land usage and decrease site development costs. The proven concept of tensile reinforcement allows construction of slopes with far steeper face angles than the soils natural angle. Steepened slope face reinforced with improved soil can increase land usage substantially while providing a natural appearance. The paper presents composite reinforced earth with improved soil surface and geogrid-reinforced backfill. For the stability of the steepened slope, the behavior of the composite reinforced earth are validated and verified by case study and numerical analysis. The case study has performed to investigate the deformation of reinforce soil slope for 14 months. Its horizontal behavior by general vertical load shows within the safe range (0.5% of structure height). As a result of numerical analysis and case study, the reinforcement effect of the steepened slope technique using improved soil is sufficient to be constructed as reinforced soil slope.

  • This paper describes the stability evaluation of reinforced earth wall using geosynthetic strip based on field test. The wall facing, which is applied in field, is able to present excellent scenery, and the reinforcement has improvement effect of pullout resistance based on rounded band anchor. The measurement is conducted according to construction elapsed time of structure for earth pressure, horizontal displacement of wall facing and reinforcement strain in field test. The evaluation results show that the measured earth pressure is less than theoretical earth pressure due to dispersion effect of earth pressure by geosynthetic strip. The horizontal displacement of wall facing is also satisfied a empirical criteria. The measured strain of reinforcement had nearly no effect on stability of the reinforced earth wall. Therefore, the geosynthetic strip with rounded band anchor can be applied in the reinforced earth wall, and the reinforced earth wall with geosynthetic strip can be commonly used in field because it has a structural stability.

  • This study presents an analytical method of estimating the developed horizontal active thrusts against GRS-RW( Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall) system adapted to the case of distanced surcharge. In addition, the design charts that could be used for preliminary design of GRS-RW system are presented. The proposed method of analysis uses two body translation mechanism as well as force polygon concept. taking into account the effect of facing's rigidity. Besides. the effect of tension cracks in c-\Phi$ soils, seismic effects and horizontal distance from the back face of wall to uniformly distributed surcharge loadings are also included. The results of horizontal active thrusts obtained from the developed method of analysis are compared with those from Jarquio's modified Boussinesq equation.

  • In this paper the failure behavior of the reinforced earth retaining wall structures according to the deformed types of the face was studied by model test using carbon rods. In model test the behavior of the face for the model of the reinforced earth wall was divided into three cases : the displacement of the top part(case 1), the lateral displacement(case 2) and the displacement of the lower part (case 3). The photographic method was applied to examine the failure line of the deformed wall with the naked eye. The failure line shows a parabolic shape for case 1, a large circular arc for case 2 and a logarithmic spiral for case 3 in the experimental results. The design failure line for the coherent gravity structure hypothesis was most similar to the failure line for the case of the lower part displacement.

  • This paper introduces a recently developed thinning-out timber framed earth retaining wall system. Timber framed retaining walls are usually designed by using design code of gravity type retaining wall but internal stability of timber framed earth retaining walls is often neglected. In this study, it is recommended to use the design code for segmental retaining walls by National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA, 1997) to check internal stability of timber framed earth retaining wall. Based on the several shear test results for 3 types of timber frames, a simple design chart including internal stability is suggested.
