In this study, the load transfer mechanism of tendon-grout interface of rock anchors has been examined through a series of static pull-out tests conducted on the model rock anchors constructed in the natural and artificial rock masses of granite and concrete, respectively. Several rock masses with horizontal discontinuities have been prepared to study the effects of weak planes on the shear stress distribution in tendon-grout interface. As a result, for the rock anchors constructed in the rock mass without discontinuities, stress concentration occurs on the upper part of the tendon-grout interface. On the contrary, as the frequency or the number of discontinuities increases, the shear stress distribution along the depth tends to be uniform. Also, an experimental equation about shear stress distribution between tendon-grout interface can be made by the regression of test results. The shear stresses computed from the experimental results between the rock surface and the depth of 2~3 times the tendon diameter are smaller than those from theory. Below the depth, the reverse can be observed.

The large scale wind turbine blades usually experience periodic change of inflow speed due to blade rotation inside the ground shear flow region. Because of the vertical wind shear, the inflow velocity in the boundary layer region is maximum at uppermost position and minimum at lowermost position. These spatial distribution of wind speeds can lead to the periodic oscillation of the 6-component loads at hub and low speed shaft of the wind turbine rotor. In this study we compare the aerodynamic loads between two inflow conditions, i.e, uniform flow (no vertical wind shear effect) and normal wind profile. From the computed results all of the relative errors for oscillating amplitudes increased due to the ground shear flow effect. Especially bending moment and thrust at hub, and bending moments at LSS increased enormously. It turns out that the aerodynamic analysis including the ground shear flow effect must be considered for fatigue analysis.

The shear stress on a surface due to the thin film fluid flow is an important issue. In case of a rotating disk, the fluid is delivered to the edge of the disk by centrifugal force, which acts as a body force on the fluid. Wear of a surface is affected by the shear stress acting on the surface and curvature. In this study, we utilize computational fluid dynamics software to model the ratio of curvature and local shear stress on solid surfaces. The key goal of the study is to determine an optimized curvature for the thin film fluid flow on a solid surface in order to minimize the local shear stress affecting the wear of this surface. Our results on the effects of curvature will be utilized for the design of devices that utilize thin film fluid flow on a solid surface, such as rotating-disk spray systems and thin film coating.

Investigation of in-situ ground in cold region is difficult due to low accessibility and environmental factors. In this study, correlation between dynamic cone resistance and shear strength is suggested to estimate the strength of frozen soils by using instrumented dynamic cone penetrometer. Tests were conducted in freezing chamber after preparing sand-silt mixture with 2.3% water content. Vertical stresses of 5 kPa and 10 kPa were applied during freezing, shearing, and penetration phase to compare the dynamic cone resistance and shear strength. The dynamic cone resistance, additionally, is calculated to minimize the effect of energy loss during hammer impact. Experimental results show that as the shear strength increases, the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) decreases nonlinearly, while the dynamic cone resistance increases linearly. This study provides the useful correlation to evaluate strength properties of the frozen soils from the dynamic cone penetration and direct shear tests.

The present study reports a simple unbonded-type shear strengthening technique for reinforced concrete beams using wire rope units. Fifteen beams failed in shear were repaired and strengthened with wire rope units, and then retested to failure. Influence of the prestressing force, orientation and spacing of wire rope units on the shear behavior of strengthened beams having shear span-to-depth ratios of 1.5, 2.5, or 3.25 were investigated. Test results showed that beams strengthened with wire rope units exhibited a higher shear strength and a larger post-failure deformation than the corresponding original beams. Inclined wire rope units was more effective for shear strength enhancement than vertical wire rope units. The increase of the prestressing force in wire rope units causes the decrease of the principal tensile stress in concrete, as a result, the diagonal tensile cracking strength of strengthened beams was higher than that of the corresponding original beams. Shear capacity of strengthened beams is compared with predictions obtained from ACI 318-05 and EC 2. Shear capacity of strengthened beams having shear span-to-depth ratio below 2.5 is reasonably predicted using ACI 318-05 formula. On the other hand, EC 2 overestimates the shear transfer capacity of wire rope units for beams having shear span-to-depth ratio above 2.5.
The objective of the present study is to evaluate the shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement at the concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. The transverse reinforcing bars were classified into two groups: V-type for the arrangement perpendicular to the interface and X-type for inclined-crossing arrangement. The transverse reinforcement ratio at the interface varied from 0.0045 to 0.0135 for V-type and 0.0064 to 0.0045 for X-type. The mechanism analysis proposed for monolithic concrete interface, derived based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity, was modified to evaluate the shear friction capacity of concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. Test results showed that the specimens with X-type reinforcement had lower amount of relative slippage at the interface and higher shear friction capacity than the companion specimens with V-type reinforcement. This observation was independent of the unit weight of concrete. The mean and standard deviation of the ratios between the experimental shear friction strength of smooth construction joints and predictions obtained from the proposed model are 1.07 and 0.14, respectively.
The friction anisotropy of shear resistance can be selectively used in geo-structures. For example, larger axially loaded deep foundation, soil nails, and tiebacks increase load carrying capacity due to induced large shear resistance while pile penetration and soil sampling produce minimal shear resistance. Previous studies confirmed direction-dependent shear resistance induced by interface between soil and surface asperity of plate inspired by geometrical shape of snake scale. The aim of this paper is to quantitatively evaluate interface friction angle with different surface asperities. Using the modified direct shear test, a total of 51 cases, which sand are prepared at the relative density of 40%, are conduced including 9 plates, two shear direction (shearing direction against the height of surface asperity is increased or decreased during shearing test), and three initial vertical stress (100 kPa, 200 kPa, 300 kPa). Experimental results show that shear stress is increased with higher height of surface asperity, shorter length of surface asperity, and the shearing direction that the height of surface asperity increases. Also, interface friction angle is decreased with larger surface asperity ratio, and shearing direction with increasing height of surface asperity produces larger interface friction angle regardless of the surface asperity ratio.

This study is on the shear strength of the internal joints of RCS composite structure consisting of reinforced concrete column and steel beam. As a newly structure system, the composite system has been developed to fully utilize the advantages of reinforced concrete column and steel beam, which also include economic and practical joint detail. Nevertheless stress transfer mechanism and structural behavior of the joints had not been still clearly revealed and shown much difference from the proposed equation. In this study, by observing the crossing of reinforced concrete column through steel beam to the RCS structure beam type, thirty seven shear failure specimens were selected and applied to the 5 major equations which is used to calculate the shear strength of RCS joint. Through the regression analysis, modified equation which is more reliable and approximate results for shear strength of RCS joints was proposed.
In this paper the behavior of saturated sand deposits where liquefaction occurred before is studied for successive earthquakes. The relationship between past pore pressure generation and reliquefaction resistance is examined by using cyclic direct simple shear tests. If the soil sample in direct simple shear produced nearly 90% of excess pore pressure during first time loading, its liquefaction resistance increased during following cyclic loading after consolidation. However, a fully liquefied soil during first time loading has a densely packed condition but shows less liquefaction resistance for the following cyclic loading. UBCSAND model that can account for pore pressure change and stiffness loss of soil during shaking is used to analyze the centrifuge test simulating reliquefaction. The pore pressure rise during first time cyclic loading controls liquefaction resistance. The measurements from reliquefaction centrifuge test are compared with numerical predictions. By considering frequent earthquakes having occurred at the Southern Korea near Japan, such effective stress approach is necessary for reliquefaction study.
Increase of traffic volume in recent years results in deterioration of the bridge slab, which is directly subjected ot vehicle loads. Where extensive repair is necessary, replacement or enhancement of load carrying capacity using full depth precast concrete deck is often the most practical solution. Precast deck system has transverse joints between adjacent precast decks. Vertical shear forces occur when a vehicle wheel load is carried by precast decks and the joints are used to transfer the load to an adjacent deck. Effective load transfer between precast decks is critical for integral behavior. Finite element analysis and tests were run on the proposed femal-to-female type joint. 18 joint specimens were tested to investigate the effects of angle. D/H, and confining stress under static load. Results indicate joint with angle of 60$^{\circ}$ and D/H of 1/4 shows the improved load carrying capacity on crack. It is effective in protecting the cracking of joints to keep the joint in compression using confining stress.
