  • The aim of this study was to investigate the rheological properties of arabinogalactans (AGs) solution isolated from moth bean (MB), navy bean (NB), and soybean (SB) including monosaccharide compositions, intrinsic viscosity, steady shear and dynamic shear rheological properties. The major monosaccharides in MB, NB, and SB were arabinose (64.8, 51.4, and 42.6%) and galactose (13.4, 19.6, and 46.2%). The yield stresses for 5% (w/v) NB and 2.5% (w/v) SB solutions were assessed as 2.10 Pa and 1.98 Pa, respectively, but in case of MB solution, it was observed to be negligible. While 5% MB solution showed rheopectic property, 5% NB and SB solutions showed thixotropic properties. As a result of frequency sweep experiment, the G' values in 2.5% MB and NB were larger than the G" value showed but 2.5% SB exhibited G" value greater than G'. These results would be useful for future application as a food additive in the food industry.

  • A systematic laboratory compaction testing was performed with the laboratory seismic measurements of the compacted specimens sampled from various compaction fills and was supplemented with in-situ seismic testing to investigate the effects of compaction energy on the elastic wave velocities of the railway roadbed materials. The both variances of the compressive and shear wave velocities with moisture content curve ($V_p$-w and $V_s$-w curves) are similar to the general trend of the density-moisture content curve(${\gamma}_d$-w curve). At the wet side of optimal moisture content (OMC), either $V_p$ or $V_s$ does not significantly increase, which is well reflecting the no gaining in density with the increasing compaction energy exceeding modified-D compaction effort. $V_p$ increases linearly with ${\gamma}_d$ at the dry side of OMC, while it does exponentially at the wet side. The in-situ wave velocities were found to be influenced by the level of confinement and $V_s$ was more sensitive to compaction energy than $V_p$.

  • Soils naturally contain grains of different minerals which may be dissolved under chemical or physical processes. The dissolution leads changes in microstructure of particulate media, such as an increase in local void or permeability, which affects the strength and deformation of soils. This study focuses on the small strain stiffness characteristics of vanishing mixtures, which consist of sand and salt particles at different volume fractions. Experiments are carried out in a conventional oedometer cell (Ko-loading) integrated with bender elements for the measurement of shear waves. Dissolutions of particles are implemented by saturating the mixtures at various confining stresses. Axial deformation and shear waves are recorded after each loading stage and during dissolution process. Experimental results show that after dissolution, the vertical strain and the void ratio increase, while the shear wave velocity and small strain shear modulus decrease. The decrease of the velocity results from the void ratio increase and particle contact decrease. The process monitoring during dissolution of the particles shows that the vertical strain dramatically increases at the beginning of the saturation process and converges after vanishing process finishes, and that the shear wave velocity decreases at the beginning and increases due to the particle reorientation. Specimens prepared by sand and salt particles are proved to be able to provide a valuable insight in macro structural behaviors of the vanishings mixtures.

  • Using shear wave velocity is more reasonable to estimate strength and integrity of rock compared with using compressional wave. It is often ambiguous to pick the dominant frequency caused by torsional wave when evaluating $V_S$ of rock specimen from FFRC method. It is also sometimes ambiguous to pick the first arrival point of S wave compared with P wave in the signals acquired from ultrasonic velocity method. Otherwise, the procedure of evaluating $V_P$ using ultrasonic velocity method and $V_L$ using FFRC method is relatively stable. Through the relationship between elastic modulus, poisson's ratio and $V_S$ can be obtained from $V_P$, $V_L$. Applicability was checked using model specimens having different material property and length and rock specimens sampled in mine area, and usefulness of proposed procedure was verified.

  • An elasto-plastic constitutive model for geological materials, which satisfies the flezibility and stability at the same time, can be used in a number of geotechnical problems. Using the spacing ratio of critical state, a flexible model is proposed based on the stability of modified Camflay model. The spacing ratio of critical state can be simply evaluated, and practically used in describing the undrained shearing behavior of clay. The proposed model has precisely predicted the stress paths and stress -strain relationships, compared with the modified Camflay model, with respect to undrained triaxial test results. Besides, the effects of strain rate, creep, and relaxation can also be considered. Using the quasi-state boundary surface, the constitutive relations are well predicted. Therefore, it is found that the assumption of associative flow rule is well posed for undrained behavior of normally consolidated clay.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of high damping rubber bearing were studied through various prototype test. The characteristics of HDRB were dependent on displacements, repeated cycles, frequencies, vertical pressure, temperature, the capability of shear deformation and the vertical stiffness. The prototype test showed that the displacement was the most governing factor influencing on characteristics of HDRB. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of HDRB were decreased with displacement, and increased with frequency. The effective stiffness was decreased with high vertical pressure, while the equivalent damping was increased. In which, the equivalent damping was more dependent on the vertical pressure than the effective stiffness. According to the results of this study, more careful examination is required to design the effective stiffness and equivalent damping ratio considering the dependencies of design displacement and exciting velocity.

  • In this work, the stabilization of chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) rubber emulsion with surfactants, i.e., nonionic (Span 60) or anionic (Sodium laurylsulfate, SLS) surfactants, was investigated. The phase inversion emulsification by interfacial chemical characteristics was used to emulsify the CSM rubber. As a result, the emulsion phase separation was observed in the case of any single surfactant. However, there was no phase separation in the mixture of Span 60 and SLS in the context of emulsion droplet size tests and rheological behaviors. The droplet size decreases by increasing the surfactant mixture, resulting in increasing the viscosity. The viscosity and shear stress determined from shear rate show a shear thinning and yield behaviors. It was then found that the emulsion stabilization can be improved using the phase inversion emulsification method and surfactant mixture.

  • Recently, as the number of earthquakes increases in the Korean Peninsula and surrounding area, the importance of earthquake countermeasures and seismic design has been increasing. As a result, interest and concerns about liquefaction, which is one of the problems that concern the earthquake, are increasing. There are various methods that can assess the possibility of liquefaction by using geotechnical information for specific ground. However, direct comparisons of each method are not yet available. In this study, the two methods using the SPT-N value and the shear wave velocity among the methods for estimating the Cyclic Resistance Ratio (CRR) value required for the simplified liquefaction assessment method were compared. And the correction of the ground information required to use the two methods respectively was compared. As a result, more accurate evaluation results were obtained when the CRR value is calculated using the SPT-N values.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the sulfate removal capacity of the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) technique through the chemical precipitation of sulfate with calcium ions. The optimal EICP recipe was obtained to retain the excess calcium cations in the solution for the generation of a sufficient amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) mineral. The effect of gypsum precipitation on the EICP-treated sand specimen was investigated by measuring the shear wave velocity and by visual inspection via scanning electron microscopy. The EICP solution using soybean crude urease, as an alternative to laboratory-grade purified urease, exhibited a lower sulfate removal efficiency at a similar CaCO3 production rate compared with the optimal EICP recipe because of soybean impurities.
