This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams reinforced with FRCM composites using different types of textile grids. It was found that the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams with FRCM composites was observed by comparing the strains measured in the stirrups and textile grids. It was found that the ultimate strength of the strengthened specimens increased compared to the basic specimens, and the failure mode at ultimate strength changed from shear failure to bending failure. When the shear strength design values of the KDS 14 20 22 and AIJ ultimate strength types were compared with the actual experimental values, it was found that the AIJ ultimate strength type was more accurate. In addition, the shear contribution of FRCM composites in the A and T models was compared, and the results showed that both models had similar trends. Reflecting these results, it is recommended that further studies should be conducted to calculate the shear performance of beam members with FRCM composites and the shear contribution of FRCM composites by using the stirrup reinforcement ratio and the type of textile grid as variables.
In this paper, influence of shear on the seismic performance and failure mode of reinforced concrete piers subjected to earthquake loading is investigated. Comparative study has been carried out for reinforced concrete column tests to verify the shear-axial interaction model presented in this paper. Comparison shows that predicted shear hysteretic response agrees well with the test results. Also conducted is a nonlinear time-history analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge damaged by the Kobe earthquake using the current development. Displacement response for piers reveals that maximum displacement is considerably increased due to the effect of shear coupled with axial force variation, which leads to overall stiffness degradation and period elongation. It is therefore concluded that the response considering both shear and axial force gives better explanation regarding the seismic damage evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge piers.

This paper presents an experimental study to investigate enhanced performance of the masonry walls strengthened in shear and ductility using honeycomb steel mesh. The performance of masonry walls strengthened with steel mesh will compare with unreinforced masonry walls to show the performance of reinforced masonry walls. According to the experiment, it is expected that this system is effective to enhance the shear strength and ductility of the masonry walls.

In this paper, an improved four-node Reissner-Mindlin plate-bending element with enhanced assumed strain field is presented for the analysis of isotropic and laminated composite plates. To avoid the shear locking and spurious zero energy modes, the transverse shear behavior is improved by the addition of a new enhanced shear strain based on the incompatible displacement mode approach and bubble function. The "standard" enhanced strain fields (Andelfinger and Ramm, 1993) are also employed to improve the in-plane behaviors of the plate elements. The four-node quadrilateral element derived using the first-order shear deformation theory is designated as "14EASP". Several applications are investigated to assess the features and the performances of the proposed element. The results are compared with other finite element solutions and analytical solutions. Numerical examples show that the element is stable, invariant, passes the patch test, and yields good results especially in highly distorted regimes.
Reinforced concrete beams of existing structure often encounter insufficient shear problems for various reasons. Application of steel plates is one of widely used methods for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams that are insufficient of shear capacity. This study presents test results on strengthening shear deficient RC beams by external bonding of vertical and diagonal slit type steel plates with anchor bolt. Test parameters are width, interval, angle and length of slits with anchor bolt. The purpose was to evaluate the failure modes and shear capacities for RC beams strengthened by various slit type steel plates with anchor bolt. The results showed that the slit type steel plate specimens strengthened by adhesive bonding and bolting failed in shear fracture modes at maximum load. Flexural crack first occurred on the tension face of beam and then inclined cracks occurred on the shear span. Finally, slit type steel plates strengthened by adhesive bonding and fastening bolts managed to delay abrupt debonding and didn't detach fully from main body of RC beam.

Damage location and extent of structure could be detected by the inverse analysis on dynamic response properties such as frequencies and mode shapes. The dynamic response of building structures has many noise and affected by nonstructural members and, above all, the behavior of building structure is more complex than civil structure and this makes the damage detection difficult. In recent researches the damage is detected by the indirect index such as sensitivity or assumed values. However, for the more reasonable damage detection, it needs to use the damage index directly induced from dynamic equation. The purpose of this study is to provide the damage detection method on shear building structures by the damage index directly induced from dynamic equation. The provided damage index could be estimated from measured mode shape of undamaged structure and frequency difference between undamaged and damaged structure. The damage detection method is applied to numerical analysis model such as MATLAB and MIDAS GENw for the verification. The damage index at damaged story represents (-) sign and 15 times than other undamaged sories.

The final purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of unreinforced masonry (URM) building more accurately. For that, shear strength and hysteresis model considering failure mode of the URM wall were discussed. The shear strength of URM wall without openings could be calculated by determining on the minimum value between the rocking strength suggested by domestic research and the sliding strength suggested by FEMA. The wall having openings could be predicted properly by the FEMA method. And the nonlinear hysteresis models for flexural and shear behaviors considering failure mode were proposed. As the result of the nonlinear cyclic analysis that carried out using suggested models, these analysis models were proper to represent the seismic behavior of URM walls.
In this study, the failure modes by ballistic impacts were studied both for a neat Kevlar woven fabric and a Kevlar liquid armor impregnated with shear thickening fluid (STF) containing silica particles. These two materials showed quite different failure modes macroscopically in ballistic impacts tests used by Cal.22 FSP and 9mm FMJ bullet. Yarn pull-out for the neat Kevlar woven fabric and yarn fracture occurred partially through all plies from 1st ply to last one for the STF-Kevlar are an important energy absorption mechanisms. The results observed by S.E.M showed commonly fiber damage which are torn skin in the longitudinal fiber direction, fiber split axially and fiber fracture for two materials. The reasons why STF-kevlar liquid armor material exhibits excellent ballistic performance are as follow: firstly the increased friction forces between yarn-yarn and fabric-fabric covered with silica particles and secondary the evolution of shear thickening phenomenmon resulting in suppression of yarn mobility.
