This work presents field-dependent Bingham and response characteristics of MR fluids under shear and flow modes. Two different types of magneto-viscometers are designed and manufactured for the shear and flow modes. respectively. For the MR fluid to be tested, MRF-132LD of Lord co. is employed. The field-dependent yield stress is experimentally distilled at various temperatures using the magneto-viscometers. Time responses of the MR fluids to step electric fields are also evaluated under two operating modes.
This study presents a newly suggested test method of Mode II fracture toughness measurement called "Punch Through Shear Test" which was originally proposed by Backers and Stephansson in 2001. The purpose of this study is to check the validity of the suggested testing method by performing Mode II fracture toughness tests for Daejeon Granite. In addition, the optimal specimen geometry for the testing and the relation between Mode II fracture toughness and confining pressure were also investigated. Fractured surface was observed to be very smooth with lots of rock debris which came off fracture surface which obviously implies that the surface was sheared off. This confirms that Mode II fracturing actually occurred. In addition, numerical analyses including continuum analysis, particle flow code analysis and crack propagation simulations were performed. Results of these numerical analyses indicated that the cracks occurred in the specimen were predominantly in Mode II and these cracks led to failure of the test specimen. From this investigation, it can be concluded that the newly suggested "Punch Through Shear Test" method provides a reliable means of determining the Mode II fracture toughness. fracture toughness.
For the composite behavior of steel tube and inner concrete, the shear connectors should be applied to the CFT structures. However, the present design codes don't provide the design criteria that can be applied on shear connectors in the CFT structures typically filled with plain concrete. This study has been carried out to propose design criteria (shear strength and resistance factor) for the stud shear connectors in CFT structures. Experimental tests using the push-out specimens with the plain concrete blocks and finite element analysis were conducted for the purpose of verifying the main failure mode to propose the shear strength of studs in CFT structures. From the results of this study, the main failure mode of studs in CFT structures is splitting crack of concrete and this failure mode reduces shear strength of studs in CFT structures relatively to those embedded in RC blocks.

In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of initiation and propagation behavior for fatigue crack observed by changing various shapes of initial crack and magnitudes of loading in modified compact tension shear(CTS) specimen subjected to shear loading. In the low-loading condition, the secondary fatigue crack was created in the notch root due to friction on the pre-crack face grew to a main crack. In the high-loading condition, fatigue crack under shear loading propagated branching from the pre-crack tip. Influenced by the shear loading condition, fatigue crack propagation retardation appeared in the initial propagation region due to the reduction of crack driving force and friction on crack face. In both cases, however, fatigue cracks grew in tensile mode type. The propagation path of fatigue crack under the Mode II loading was 70 degree angle from the initial crack regardless of its shape and load magnitude.
Recently, the failure case of the bridge deck slabs have been increasing in Korea and it was observed that the failure modes of most deck slabs collapsed were not caused by flexural moment but by local punching shear. The main reason of the failures was the punching shear failure of deck slabs under heavy truck traffics. This paper presents test results obtained from punching shear tests performed on prestressed precast deck specimens. Cracking patterns, failure modes, deflections, and stresses are included as well as discussion of the punching shear strength observed during punching shear tests. Static lest specimens had punching shear failures at loads much higher than predicted by the current codes. Tests results indicate that current code provisions appear to be conservative.

The shear failure modes of reinforced concrete members using high-strength materials (high-strength concrete and high-strength steel) are different to those of reinforced concrete members using normal-strength materials. The reinforced concrete members using high-strength materials are inclined to fail due to concrete crushing before the shear reinforcing bar reaches its yield strength. This paper presents an evaluation equation to calculate the maximum shear reinforcement ratio based on the material stresses and strains when the reinforced concrete members fail in shear. The maximum shear reinforcement ratio calculated by the proposed equation increases as the compressive strength of concrete increases. Test results of 97 reinforced concrete members reported in the technical literatures are used to check the validity of the proposed equation. The comparison between the test results and the ratio calculated using the proposed equation indicated that the shear failure modes depended on the interaction between the amount of shear reinforcement and the compressive strength of concrete.

This study investigates the shear behavior of architectural masonry veneer wall reinforced with specific reinforcement details proposed by this study. For this purpose, experimental tests were conducted using one un-reinforced masonry(URM) wall specimen and three reinforced masonry(RM) wall specimens under quasi static cyclic loads. Un-reinforced(plain) masonry wall is expressed that behavior and failure mode are different for aspect ratio(L/H) and axial compressive force. The test variables are wall aspect ratio and presence of reinforcement. These specimens are masonry structure for architectural clading that is not to exist the axial compressive force. thus the axial compressive force is excepted from test variable. Test result, Behavior of specimens are dominated over rocking mode, but final failure modes are combined with different behaviors. And FEMA273 has proposed the equation of shear strength of masonry pier subjected to in-plane loading. Shear strength equations are classified four types of failure mode that is Rocking, and Toe-Crushing, Bed-Joint-Sliding and Diagonal-Tension. FEMA273 equations predict the behavior modes well, but shear strength is shown in different result.
The shear failure modes of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) strengthened concrete beams are quite different to those of the beams strengthened with steel stirrups. When the beams are strengthened with larger amount of FRP composites, the beams normally fail in shear due to concrete crushing before the FRP reaches its rupture strain. In order to predict the shear strength of such beams, the actual rupture strain must be known. The equations previously reported in the technical literature adopt an effective reduction factor for the rupture strain. These equations may not be applicable to FRP strengthened RC beams that are beyond the experimental application limits, because most of these equations are empirical in nature. This paper presents the results of an analytical study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams externally wrapped with FRP composites and internally reinforced with conventional steel stirrups.
