Porous walkway blocks are constructed for the purpose already, but reserved water is easily consumed due to the bigger permeability than necessary. Furthermore, porous structure reduces the strength of blocks, which resulting cracking and settlements in walkways. In this study, we suggested a solution for given problems by determination for the location of minimum principal stress in walkway blocks against moving foot loads in order to design and verifying the determined location of minimum principal stress. An optimum design with a verification example for determined location of minimum principal stress have been presented in a two dimensional Block member on elastic foundation for pedestrian walkway for reserving water inside. The minimum value for sum of shear forces is found when ${\times}1$ is 58.58 mm(30% of total span, 200mm), while the minimum deformation is located at ${\times}2=80mm$(70% of total span, 200 mm). In a modified model, When moving boundary condition(walkway foot loads) is located at ${\times}1$(=0 mm), the location of minimum principal stresses is found at 168 mm( 84% of span, 200 mm), in which the stress concentration due to the foot load is modeled as two layers of distributed loads(reactions of foundation modeled as springs). Consequently, zero deformed reservoirs for rainwater on the neutral axis (${\times}2=167mm$) has been determined in the modified model with three dimensional FEM analysis verifications.
A TSL (Thin Spray-on Liner) has a higher initial strength and faster construction time than conventional cementitious shotcrete. Because of its high adhesion and tensile strength, the TSL reinforced concrete show a characteristic like composite materials. In this study, to consider an application to the conventional design method, ASD (allowable stress design), numerical study was used. In the numerical analysis, material and contact properties were adopt from previous studies. Then a thickness of concrete in the tunnel was evaluated with the TSL reinforced case by the ASD concept. In other words, bending compressive stress, bending tensile stress and shearing force of the concrete were considered to determine a thickness of concrete lining by the given boundary conditions. From the numerical analysis, there was no tendency to show by the ASD because the ASD is based on the elastic theory while the TSL typically contributes to reinforcement after yielding.

In this study, flexural tests of precast concrete panels according to the thickness of cross-sectional and the with or not of reinforcement were carried out in order to develop and assess of a lightweight precast concrete panel using ultra high performance concrete. For the test, four panels were fabricated, and consisted of one normal concrete panel and three ultra high performance concrete panels. As a test result, it was found that the plain precast panel using ultra high performance concrete had a lower flexural performance than the reinforced normal concrete panel, regardless of the cross-sectional size. The flexural performance of the hollow-sectional precast panel applying ultra high performance concrete, is improved by 150% compared to that of the reinforced normal concrete panel. That is, through additional performance verification and optimization of the cross-sectional design of the panel, the ultra high performance concrete precast panel can be made lighter. Also, the practical use of lightweight precast panels with ultra high performance concrete can be available through evaluation on shear, joint connection and anchoring, etc.
There have been often cases of collapse for geogrid reinforced soil (GRS) retaining wall. Hence, social interest in the reinforcement and restoration of the collapsed GRS wall is increasing day by day. However, there are only few researches. For this reason, a series of numerical analyses using the Plaxis 2D program was conducted in this study to analyze the suitable reinforcement methods that can be applied on the existing damaged GRS wall caused by overturning of the modular blocks facing and the surface settlement at the backfill as the results from the design failure. The restoration plan used in this study is composed of two cases: (Case 1) soil nailing reinforcement and reinforced concrete (RC) wall facing construction on the existing damaged GRS wall; and (Case 2) removal of the entire damaged GRS wall and then reconstruction. The results on the internal stability of the GRS wall show that Case 1 obtained a greater safety factor than Case 2 for tensile force while Case 2 had a greater safety factor than Case 1 for pullout failures. Case 1 was found to be more stable than Case 2 in terms of the global slope safety by shear strength reduction method and the external deformation behavior by numerical analysis. In this study, the existing damaged GRS wall which was reinforced using Case 1 method shows more stable external behavior.
As enormous construction projects of land development are carried out around Korea, useful construction materials are needed to perform the construction projects. However, there are no more enough of fill and reclamation materials in our country. That is why the coal ash is expected to be utilized as an alternative material. Since the coal ash has the characteristics of a pozzolan and a selfhardening material, it is adjudged that coal ash has a great possibility to be used as a fill and reclamation material. In this study, grain size analysis, Atterberg limit test, and specific gravity test were performed to examine the physical characteristics of the coal ash about a self-hardening material before utilizing the coal ash in the construction. Compaction test, unconfined compression test, direct shear test, and flexible wall permeability test were conducted to investigate the engineering characteristics according to mixture ratios of fly ash and bottom ash. As a result of the tests, it was confirmed that the mixing ratio 1:1 of fly ash and bottom ash is the most effective to use as a fill and reclamation material. If the mixture of coal ash is used as a backfill material with light weight around structure, it is expected to play a significant role in reducing earth pressure on the back of the structure. As the age of the mixture of coal ash goes by, it intends to decrease the coefficient of permeability. As described above, the coal ash should be considered as an alternative material of fill and reclamation materials since the result of the tests indicates that the coal ash is suitable to a useful material on the construction design.
Optimal dispersion and fabrication conditions of carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded in phenolic resin were determined by electrical resistance measurement; and interfacial property was investigated between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites by electro-micromechanical techniques. Wettability of carbon fiber was improved significantly after plasma treatment. Surface energies of carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites were measured using Wilhelmy plate technique. Since surface activation of carbon fiber, the advancing contact angle decreased from $65^{\circ}$ to $28^{\circ}$ after plasma treatment. It was consistent with static contact angle results of carbon fiber. Work of adhesion between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites was higher than that without modification. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and apparent modulus also increased with plasma treatment of carbon fiber.

Recently, as the service life of structures increased, the load-carrying capacity of deteriorated reinforced concrete, where corrosion of reinforcing bars occurs due to various causes, is frequently decreased. In order to address this problem, many studies on the bond characteristic of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars with corrosion resistance, light weight and high tensile strength have been conducted, however there are not many studies on the bond characteristic of grid-typed CFRP embedded in concrete. Therefore, in order to evaluate the bond characteristics of grid-typed CFRP and its usability as a substitute for steel rebar, a pull-out test is performed using the longitudinal bond length and transverse grid length of the grid-typed CFRP as variables. Through the pull-out test, the bond load-slip curve of the grid-typed CFRP is derived, and the bond behavior is analyzed. The total bond load equation is proposed as the sum of the bond force of the longitudinal bond length and the shear force of the grid in the transverse direction. Also, expressing the area of the bond load-slip curve as total work, the change in dissipated energy with respect to the slip is analyzed to examine the effect of the tranverse grid on the bond force.
Laboratory model test with soft silty ground (ML) and polluted silty ground with wastewater and factory waste oil ($ML_p$) was conducted and the applicability of changes of bearing capacity from the increase of pollutants was compared and analyzed with existing findings. As silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil had increased contents of pollutants, plasticization of ground was fostered compared to soft silt ground due to the influence of pollutants, and characteristics of ground strength decreased. Critical surcharge value of soft silty ground $q_{cr}=4.14c_u$, ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=9.53c_u$, critical surcharge value of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil $q_{cr}=1.78c_u$ and ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=4.39c_u$. Critical surcharge and ultimate bearing capacity of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil were less than those of soft silty ground. It meant that shearing resistance due to the increase of pollutants decreased and rather a smaller value was obtained.

Seabed beneath and near the coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If the liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually fail. Especially, the seabed liquefaction behavior beneath a gravity-based structure under wave loading should be evaluated and considered for design purpose. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using 2-dimensional numerical wave tank. The 2-dimensional numerical wave tank was expanded to account for irregular wave fields, and to calculate the dynamic wave pressure and water particle velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the structure. The simulation results of the wave pressure and the shear stress induced by water particle velocity were used as inputs to a FLIP(Finite element analysis LIquefaction Program). Then, the FLIP evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the analysis, when the shear stress was considered, the liquefaction at the seabed in front of the structure was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance force, scour can possibly occur on the seabed. Therefore, the strength decrease of the seabed at the front of the structure due to high wave loading for the longer period of time such as a storm can increase the structural motion and consequently influence the stability of the structure.
Abundant spinel lherzolite xenoliths showing distinctively different textural types such as protogranular, porphyroclastic, and mylonitic texture are trapped in the basaltic rocks from southeastern part of Jeju Island. These xenoliths show the textural spectrum from coarse-grained protogranular through porphyroclastic with bimodal grain size to fine-grained and foliated mylonitic texture. They tend to decrease in grain sizes and show more linear grain boundaries and more frequent triple junctions from protogranular through porphyroclastic to mylonitic. Spinel has different occurrence mode according the textural type. Spinel is always associated with orthopyroxene in protogranular texture, whereas it is scattered and independent of orthopyroxene in mylonitic texture. Additionally, porphyroblast from porphyroclastic and mylonitic textures has internal deformation features such as kink band, undulatory extinction and curved lamella, whereas neoblast is strain-free. These textural features indicate increasing degree of static/dynamic recrystallization from protogranular through porphyroclastic to mylonitic texture. The mg#[$=100{\times}Mg/(Mg+Fe_t)$] of olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene is relatively constant (ol: 88-91; opx: 89-92; cpx: 89-92) regardless of textural differences. The mg# of constituent minerals, NiO content (0.3~0.4 wt%) and MnO content (0.1~0.2 wt%) of olivine are similar to those of mantle xenoliths worldwide, also indicating that studied spinel lherzolite xenoliths were mantle residues having experienced 20~25% partial melting. The geochemical and textural characteristics have close relations showing that LREE and incompatible trace elements content of orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene increases from protogranular through porphyroclastic to mylonitic. These observations suggest that the studied mantle xenoliths experienced metasomatism by LREE enriched melt or fluid after partial melting, indicating a close relation between deformation and metasomatism. The metasomatism was possibly confined to narrow shear zones from where porphyroclastic and mylonitic textured xenoliths originated. These shear zones might favorably drive the percolation of LREE-enriched melts/fluids responsible for the metasomatism in the lithospheric mantle below the Jeju Island.
