Purpose: This study was to examine the effect of electrical muscle stimulation therapy on chronic knee pain and depression for the aged. Method: Design was one-group pretest-posttest design. Samples were 32 elderly of 60 years old and above with chronic knee pain and depression. Measures were the S-F McGill Pain Questuionnaire for chronic knee pain and the Korean Elderly Depression Scale for depression. Electrical muscle stimulation therapy, experimental treatment, was applied for 12 weeks, 3 times/week, 15 min/time. Data were collected from January 2005 to May 2005. Data were analyzed using SPSS PC+ 12 version. Results: After receiving electrical muscle stimulation therapy, chronic knee pain (t=-88.034, P=.000) and depression (t=-114.659, P=.000) were significantly decreased. Conclusion: Electrical muscle stimulation therapy can be a better effective primary nursing intervention on chronic knee pain and depression for community dwelling elders.
In an attempt to characterize the ventral root afferent fibers, arterial blood pressure responses to stimulation of the ventral root (VR) were observed in anesthetized cats. Effects of the morphine administered either intravenously or direct spinally and of the spinal lesions on the pressor responses were compared. Followings are the results obtained. 1) Stimulation of the VR with C-strength, high frequency stimuli evoked a marked pressor response. No depressor response, which had been reported during peripheral nerve stimulation, was observed during VR stimulation with low frequency. 2) Acute cervical spinalization abolished the pressor response, indicating the involvement of supraspinal mechanism. 3) The ascending spinal pathways of the pressor response were located in the dorsolateral funiculus bilaterally. 4) Intravenously administered morphine exaggerated the pressor response to VR stimulation, while direct spinally administered morphine suppressed it. From the above results it was concluded that the ventral root afferent fibers have more similar properties to muscular C-afferent fibers than to cutaneous C-fibers.

The aim of this study was to develop a Pulsed Magnetic Fields(PMFs) system which can produce effects locally and simulate muscular tissues equally. To evaluate the PMFs system we caused DOMS(Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) to subjects in biceps of the arm. Then, we stimulated acupoint HT2 using PMFs(20 minutes) and TEAS(20 minutes) for 2 days. The other subjects did not stimulate. Then we checked body surface temperature in biceps of the arm. All subjects had an asymmetrical body surface temperature in biceps after exercise(Non-stimulation group=$2.00{\pm}1.16^{\circ}C$, TEAS group=$1.73{\pm}0.52^{\circ}C$, PMFs group=$1.48{\pm}0.51^{\circ}C$). After 1st stimulation all subjects had decreased temperature differences(Non-stimulation group=$1.37{\pm}0.71^{\circ}C$, TEAS group=$1.08{\pm}0.43^{\circ}C$, PMFs group=$1.23{\pm}0.15^{\circ}C$). PMFs group had a symmetry body surface temperature after 24 hours($0.05{\pm}0.06^{\circ}C$) and TEAS group had that after 48 hours($0.1{\pm}0.08^{\circ}C$). Non-stimulation group did not recovery after 48 hours($0.37{\pm}0.06^{\circ}C$). Therefore, PMFs on acupoint had an therapeutic effect in DOMS.
Nine Korean native cattle were purchased from a beef cattle farm. Immediatly after slaughtering and skinning, each carcass was split into left and right sides and the one half was kept as a control, the other one was electrically stimulated by using 400v stimulator for 1 min. All samples were analyzed for shear force value, ATP and biochemical changes to investigate the effect of electrical stimulation during storage at $5^{\circ}C\;and\;15^{\circ}C$. The amount of lactate of electrically stimulated (E.S.) meat showed a rapid increment compared with that of control (p<0.01). E.S. treatment caused a rapid drop of pH value. Initial pH decreased from 6.85 to 6.38 in M. semitendinosus and from 7.0 to 6.58 in Triceps brachii by E.S. treatment (p<0.01). Electrically stimulated muscle showed decrease (34.67%) in ATP to $5.74{\mu}mole/g$ from $8.78{\mu}mole/g$ of unstimulated meat. ATP of the electrically stimulated muscle stored at $15^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$ was degraded faster than that of control until 6 hours post-mortem (p<0.05). The tenderness of meat after aging was improved significantly by electrical stimulation with lower shear force value than that of untreated meat (p<0.01).

This is a study about a platform realization measuring the extent of reaction in nerve, as giving a electrical impulse on a nerve pulp regulating a function of muscle, about a measurement of nerve reaction in the amount of current, the lasting time of current, and the position of electrode from a electrical impuls. The position of an electrode in a electrical nerve impuls have nothing to do with all nerves from exercise to all things. There is the Single Twitch Stimulation, Train-of-four, and Double Burst Stimulation in the form of nerve stimulation. This report is needed for selecting MCU of low electric power for a base in embedded system and measuring the extent of reaction after making a sensor interface to know sensitivity of measuring sensor in basic reaction of nerve impuls. The platform is realized to select a high efficiency AD Convertor for raising accuracy in measured data. As the platform in this report was developed for a medical appliances, it was designed to consider user safety in electric power Isolation when making electric power circuit.

The effects of low and high-voltage-electrical-stimulation and storing temperature on concentration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) related compounds were studied in M. Semitendinosus muscles from Korean native cattle. Seven beef carcasses were split, the one side was electrically stimulated for 1 minute by using stimulator adjusted to 400 V/60 Hz as high voltage or to 110 V/60 Hz as low voltage while the other side served as an unstimulated control. Both side samples were incubated at $5^{\circ}C\;and\;15^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. During storage, the concentration of ATP and its breakdown products were measured as a function of time. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the variance of ATP, adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inosine monophosphate (IMP) levels between low-or high-voltage-electrically stimulated muscles and unstimulated control at just after post-stimulation. The decomposition of adenosine compounds and the production of inosine compounds of low-voltage-electrically stimulated muscles were advanced more slowly than those of high-voltage-treatment muscles. With increasing storage time, the influence of electrical stimulation on changes of ATP related compounds in meat was decreased, but storing temperature begin to affect their concentration. Significant difference in the Hypoxanthine levels (p<0.05) was found of sample stored for 48 hours at $15^{\circ}C$ from samples stored at $5^{\circ}C$ regardless of electrical stimulation treatemt. IMP and inosine values in electrically stimulated muscles, higher than of a control during 72 hours of storage, indicated rapid production of flavor compounds in beef.
This research was designed to investigate how the exercise program affects paraplegic standing and walking employing functional electrical stimulation(FES). Emphasis was also given to fatigue of major lower extremity muscles induced by different types of electrical stimulation. We applied continuous and intermittent rectangular pulse trains to quadriceps of 10 normal subjects and 4 complete paraplegic patients. The frequencies were 20Hz and 80Hz, and the knee angle was fixed at 90$^{\circ}$and 150$^{\circ}$to investigate how muscle fatigue is related to muscle length. The knee extensor torque was measured and monitored. We have been training quadriceps and gastrocnemius of a male paraplegic patient by means of electrical stimulation for the past two year. FES standing was initiated when the knee extensors became strong enough to support the body weight, and then the patient started FES walking utilizing parallel bars and a walker. We used an 8-channel constant-voltage stimulator and surface electrodes. The experimental results indicated that paralyzed muscles fatigued rapidly around the optimal length contrary to normal muscles and confirmed that low frequency and intermittent stimulation delayed fatigue. Our exercise program increased muscle force by approximately 10 folds and decreased the fatigue index to half of the initial value. In addition, the exercise enabled the patient to voluntarily lift each leg up to 10cm, which was of great help to the swing phase of FES walking. Both muscle force and resistance to fatigue were significantly enhanced right after the exercise was applied every day instead of 6 days a week. Up to date, the patient can walk for more than two and half minutes at 10m/min while controlling the on/off time of the stimulator by pushing the toggle switch attached to the walker handle.
