We followed and extended the algorithm originally made by Das (1995) to calculate the electric potential and field induced by electric current in arbitrary anisotropic layered structure. We confirmed all the theoretical contents and coded the corresponding program to acquire the electric potential and field. Further we extended to forward estimation of apparent resistivity to be attained by electrical resistivity survey on anisotropic layered structure with differing the electrode spacing and azimuth of anisotropy. The effects of anisotropy were reviewed by considering some examples.
There are 17,000 reservoir dams in Korea, of which more than 85% were built over 50 years ago. Old embankment dams are weakened by internal erosion and suffusion phenomena due to preferential leakage paths and this ongoing weakening can cause their failure. Therefore, early warning associated with leakage in an embankment dam is crucial to prevent its failure. An electrical resistivity survey is a non-destructive, real-time and in-situ technique for detecting the development of leakage zones and general conditions of embankment dams. Because of its advantages, the electrical resistivity survey is widely used for reservoir safety inspections. However, the electrical resistivity survey is still not officially included in the precise safety inspection of reservoir dams because it cannot present a quantitative index of dam safety. In this study, we propose a method for calculating the leak index according to the water content evaluated from the electrical resistivity survey and/or induced polarization survey. Particularly, by proposing a quantitative leak index calculation method from monitoring surveys and independent surveys, we provide a theoretical basis for including electrical resistivity and induced polarization surveys as components of the precise safety inspection of reservoirs dams.
The complex resistivity method is an exploration technique that can obtain various characteristic information of underground media by measuring resistivity and phase in the frequency domain, and its utilization has recently increased. In this paper, a three-dimensional inversion algorithm for the CR data was developed to increase the utilization of this method. The Poisson equation, which can be applied when the electromagnetic coupling effect is ignored, was applied to the modeling, and the inversion algorithm was developed by modifying the existing algorithm by adopting comlex variables. In order to increase the stability of the inversion, a technique was introduced to automatically adjust the Lagrangian multiplier according to the ratio of the error vector and the model update vector. Furthermore, to compensate for the loss of data due to noisy phase data, a two-step inversion method that conducts inversion iterations using only resistivity data in the beginning and both of resistivity and phase data in the second half was developed. As a result of the experiment for the synthetic data, stable inversion results were obtained, and the validity to real data was also confirmed by applying the developed 3D inversion algorithm to the analysis of field data acquired near a hydrothermal mine.
In this study, we describe the principle and result of geophysical techniques which are widely used in geotechnical survey. Also we discuss two case histories. One is discrimination of limestone cavity areas by resistivity, seismic tomography, televiewer, well logging, and the other is discrimination of coal by resistivity, electromagnetic method, resistivity tomography.
Resistivity method has been used for the dam safety inspection and, for the convenience of fieldwork, two-dimensional (2D) resistivity data has been usually measured along the dam crest. However, since the dam has three-dimensional (3D) structure, 2D resistivity survey along the dam crest violates 2D assumption and 3D effects caused by 3D topography and material properties in the dam distort the inversion result of 2D resistivity data acquired along the dam crest. Furthermore, it is really hard to evaluate the 3D structure of the dam and 3D leakage pathway using 2D resistivity survey because 2D resistivity survey can provide only 2D resistivity section beneath the survey line. In this study, 3D resistivity survey was conducted at a dam in Korea. By comparing the results from 3D and 2D resistivity surveys, merit and demerits of 3D survey were investigated. Finally, it was confirmed that 3D survey can provide more accurate information about the dam status and 3D leakage pathway compared to the 2D survey. Therefore the 3D resistivity survey should be actively expanded for more accurate dam safety inspection even though more time and expense are required.
In this study, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) were conducted to find the mineralized zone at the Geumpung mine in Dojeon-ri, Susan-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. The deviation of the inclined borehole was measured to obtain the exact positions of the electrodes for correcting apparent resistivity values from ERT. Geophysical loggings such as resistivity and natural gamma were conducted to obtain the properties of the material near the borehole. Measurements of the physical properties of the cores, such as porosity, water content, density, susceptibility, resistivity were performed to analyze the correlation between physical properties and resistivity. Grade analysis for core sample was also conducted to identify relationship between grade and resistivity. Rock property analysis shows that the resistivity is more dominated by susceptibility and grade than by porosity and water content in the mineralized zone. The results of ERT are well consistent with geophysical logging data and geologic column. So ERT is powerful method to identify conductive mineralized zone.

Five electrical resistivity dipole-dipole and two seismic reflection surveys were performed in the southeastern margin of the Yongdong basin to delineate the shallow basin architecture. To investigate the intra-basin structure, twenty four resistivity sounding points and three dipole-dipole lines were selected especially in the vicinity of volcanic masses. The basin-fault boundaries are identified in electrical dipole-dipole resistivity section as high resistivity-contrast of approximately $1,500\;{\Omega}{\cdot}m$, characterized as a band of high standard-deviation. They are also effectively clarified in the seismic reflection data: amplitude and continuity contrasts in the common shot gather, first-arrival profiles, complex attribute plots. The intra-basin resistivity structures are constructed by interpolating vertical electrical sounding data and dipole-dipole profiles. The high-resistivity anomalies most likely originate from the northsouth-trending and northeast-dipping volcanic masses, which are to be further quantitatively investigated with geomagnetic and magnetotelluric surveys.
Streamer resistivity surveys in shallow marine environments were carried out to analyze sediment characteristics at the bottom of reservoir. Because the resistivity values of reservoir water are very low and those of sediment are relatively high, apparent resistivity values increase with depth. And it is necessary to eliminate the apparent resistivity data decreased highly when the number of separation increases. According to the repeated data processing, we proposed the resistivity ratio of upper-to-lower layer is $0.6{\sim}0.8$ because the RMS error of inversion leads to the minimum in these range. As a result of the inversion for two- and three-layer model, the inversion including water depth is proved to be more effective than conventional method.
Although faults can be found by geological surveys, the surface traces of faults are not easily discovered by traditional geological surveys due to alluvia. In and around faults and fracture zones, the electrical resistivity appears to be lower than that of the surroundings due to the content of groundwater and clay minerals. Therefore, electrical resistivity surveys are effective to search buried faults and fracture zones. The dipole-dipole array electrical resistivity surveys, which could show the two dimensional subsurface electrical resistivity structure, were carried out in two areas, Yongdang-ri, Woongsang-eup, Yangsan-si, Kyungsangnam-do and Malbang-ri, Woedong-eup, Kyungju-si, Kyungsangpook-do. The one was next to the Dongrae Fault and the other near the Ulsan Fault was close to the region in which debatable quaternary fault traces had been found recently. From each measured data set, the electrical resistivity cross-section was obtained using the inversion program the reliability of which was analyzed using analytic solutions. A low resistivity zone was found in the inverted cross-section from the Yongdang-ri area survey data, and two low resistivity zones were found in that from the Malbang-ri area survey data. They were almost vertical and were 15∼20 m wide. Accounting the shape and the very low resistivity values of those zones (<100 Ωm)in the inverted section, they were interpreted as fracture zones although they should be proven by trenching. The reliability of the interpretation might be improved by adding some more parallel resistivity survey lines and interpreting the results in 3 and/or adding other geophysical survey.

Electrical resistivity survey is applied for estimation of inferred fault and fractured zone in civil engineering and environment field. While 15 m diameter and 3 lines tunnels are excavated. It is recognized that core stone and fractured zone is existed in the weathered slope of the entrance to a tunnel. To make confirmation geological characteristics, dipole-dipole electric resistivity survey was carried out in weathered slope of the entrance to a tunnel. Core stone distribution and fracture zone characteristics are estimated by reverse analysis and 2D-resistivity structure using FDM.
