  • This study aims to explore the heat transfer and flow phenomena inside an instant water heater and the influence of the design parameters of the water heater on the heating performance was investigated by 3-D numerical simulations considering heat convection. The design parameters are the heating ceramic dimension, the power of the heating device, and the water flow rate. The results show that a reasonable space for the heating device is required to optimize the heating performance. It is desirable to design higher heating device as possible for a given electric power. There exists a critical water flow rate that best meets the heating performance. The change in electric power has no impact on the flow phenomena and heating performance.

  • When an electrically conducting fluid flows through a staggered tube bank, the heat transfer and fluid flow features are changed by the externally introduced magnetic field. This study provides a numerical investigation of this phenomenon. Heat and fluid flows are investigated for unsteady laminar flows at Reynolds numbers of 50 and 100 with the Hartmann number gradually increasing from zero to 100. As the Hartmann number increases, and owing to the effects of the introduced magnetic field, the velocity boundary layer near the tube wall is thinned, the flow separation is delayed downstream, and the shrinkage of a recirculation zone formed near the rear side is observed. Based on these thermo-fluid deformations, the resulting changes in the local and average Nusselt number are investigated.

  • Here has been examined a 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling in order to investigate the performance analysis of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells with serpentine flow fields. The present CFD model considers the isothermal transport phenomena in a fuel cell involving mass, momentum transport, electrode kinetics, and potential fields. Co-current flow patterns for a PEMFC are considered for various geometries in the single straight cell. Current density distribution from the calculated distribution of oxygen and hydrogen mass fractions has been determined, where the activation overpotential has been also calculated within anode and cathode. CFD results showed that profiles differ from those simulations subjected to each the calculated activation overpotential. It is interesting that the present serpentine flow field shows the specific distribution of current density with respect to the aspect ratio of depth to width and the ratio of reaction area for various serpentine geometries. Simulation results were considered reasonable with the other CFD results reported in literature and global comparisons of the PEMFC model.

  • Recently, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence among the 4th industrial revolution has progressed based on the performance improvement of semiconductor, and circuit integration. According to transistors, which help operation of internal electronic devices and equipment that have been progressed to be more complicated and miniaturized, the control of heat generation and improvement of heat dissipation efficiency have emerged as new performance indicators. The DUT(Device Under Test) Shell is equipment which detects malfunction transistor by evaluating the durability of transistor through heat dissipation in a state where the power is cut off at an arbitrary heating point applying the rating current to inspect the transistor. Since the DUT shell can test more transistor at the same time according to the heat dissipation structure inside the equipment, the heat dissipation efficiency has a direct relationship with the malfunction transistor detection efficiency. Thus, in this paper, we propose various method for PCB configuration structure to optimize heat dissipation of DUT shell and we also propose various transformation and thermal analysis of optimal DUT shell using computational fluid dynamics.

  • A rapid analytical method based on capillary electrophoresis is described for the determination of trace anions in high-purity chemicals which is used to prevent corrosion demage in nuclear power plants. Separations are carried out at 20kV using trimethylsilane-coated fused-silica capillary ($70cm{\times}50$ or $75{\mu}m$ i.d.) with the electrolyte of 5mM Chromate(pH=8). Detection was achieved using on-column indirect photometry at 254nm. The simultaneous analysis of inorganic anions, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, azide and phosphate was performed using methods of hydrodynamic(>1ppm) and / or electrokinetic(<1ppm) injection. The results of studies on the coexisting anions on analyte ions shows that peak responses of analyte in hydrodynamic injection is constant without effect of coexisting anions, but those of analysis in electrokinetic injection is strongly dependant upon the kind of coexisting anions and its ionic mobility. The analyte enrichment rate, hence peak response, is positive relationship with the resistance of the sample solution. Thus, appropriate measures, such as standard addition or internal standard technique, must be used to account for differences in conductance of standard and sample solutions.

  • A fuel cell is an electrochemical device continuously converting the chemical energy in a fuel and an oxidant to electrical energy by going through an essentially invariant electrode-electrolyte system. Phosphoric acid fuel cell employs concentrated phosphoric acid as an electrolyte. The cell stack in the fuel cell, which is the most important part of the fuel cell system, is made up of anode where oxidation of the fuel occurs cathode where reduction of the oxidant occurs; and electrolyte, to separate the anode and cathode and to conduct the ions between them. Fuel cell performance is associated with many parameters such as operating and design parameters associated with the system configuration. In order to understand the design concepts of the phosphoric fuel cell and predict it's performance, we have here introduced the simulation of the fuel-cell stack which is core component and modeled in a 3-dimensional grid space. The concentration of reactants and products, and the temperature distributions according to the flow rates of an oxidant are computed by the help of a computational fluid dynamic code, i.e., FLUENT.

  • We investigated the temperature uniformity in an anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell, using the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) toolbox, OpenFOAM. Numerical simulation was performed in three different flow paths, i.e., co-flow, counter-flow, and cross-flow paths. Gas flow in a porous electrode was calculated using effective diffusivity while considering the effect of interconnect rib. A lumped internal resistance model derived from a semi-empirical correlation was implemented for the calculation of electrochemical reaction. The result showed that the counter-flow path displayed the most uniform temperature distribution.

  • A nonlinear aeroelastic analysis system in transonic and supersonic flows has been developed using high speed parallel processing technique on the network based PC-clustered machines. This paper includes the coupling of advanced numerical techniques such as computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The unsteady Euler solver on dynamic unstructured meshes is employed and coupled with computational aeroelastic solvers. Thus it can give very accurate engineering data in the structural and aeroelastic design of flight vehicles. To show the great potential of useful application, transonic and supersonic flutter analyses have been conducted for a complete aircraft model under developing in Korea.

  • In this study, transonic/supersonic nonlinear flutter analysis system of a complete aircraft including forced harmonic motion pf control surfaces has been effectively developed using the modified transonic small disturbance (TSD) equation. To consider the nonlinear effects, the coupled time marching method (CTM) combining computational structural dynamics (CFD) has been directly applied for aeroelastic computations. The grid system for a complex full aircraft configuration is effectively generated by the developed inhouse code. Intransonic and supersonic flight regimes, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic effect has been investigated for a complete aircraft model. Also, nonlinear flutter flight simulations for the forced harmonic motion of control surfaces are practically presented in detail.
