  • In this study, we demonstrated the operation of an electroosmotic pump with cylindrical porous glass frits and evaluated its long-term operation. The performance of this electroosmotic pump was characterized in terms of maximum flow rate, current, and pressure using deionized water and 1 mM borate buffer. The maximum flow rate, current, and pressure linearly increase with voltage. The maximum flow rate is normalized by the pumping area and voltage for comparison of the performance between the electroosmotic pumps with cylindrical and planar frits. The normalized maximum flow rate of the cylindrical-type pump is higher than that of the planar-type pump because of their different geometries. The cylindrical-type electroosmotic pump has five times better performance than the planartype electroosmotic pump for a given pump package volume. It can operate stably for over 3 hours.

  • This paper presents the performance of a porous glass electroosmotic pump using an iodide/triiodide aqueous solution. The porous glass electroosmotic pump is characterized in terms of the flow rate and voltage. The flow rate and voltage increases linearly with current. A point where the voltage significantly increases is observed owing to an excess in redox capacity. The transition time monotonously decreases with current. The normalized flow rate (flow rate per membrane surface area) is used to compare previous results with results obtained in this study. The normalized flow rate of porous glass frits is three times higher than that of Nafion 117.

  • Because of increasing demand, a small portable drug injector that uses osmotic pressure for its operation force is developed, and its performance is evaluated. The osmotic drug injector can be small and lightweight because it does not require heavy batteries and an actuator, unlike previous electromechanical drug injectors. Moreover, its injection pressure can be sustained longer than that of previous elastic drug injectors. The new device is composed of a drug sac, osmotic pressure chamber, semipermeable membrane, and solvent chamber. To evaluate its performance, an in-vitro experiment was designed to measure the outflow and the injection pressure with respect to time. The experimental results show that the new drug infuser can continuously deliver 20 ml drug over a period of 20 h. The maximum injecting pressure was over 400 mmHg. Which prevents backflow caused by changes in the outlet pressure resulting from changes to the position of the device and the patient's posture.

  • Electro-osmotic pumps were fabricated by using two types of porous glass frits. The performance of these pumps was characterized in terms of maximum flow rate, current, and pressure using deionized water and 1 mM sodium tertraborate decahydrate buffer. Maximum flow rate and current when ROBU porous glass frits were used were higher than those when DURAN porous glass frits were used because of the high porosity of the ROBU glass frits. However, the maximum pressure when ROBU glass frits were used was similar to that when DURAN glass frits were used. The therrmodynamic efficiency of a pump with ROBU porous glass frits is approximately twice that of a pump with DURAN porous glass frits. Further, the maximum flow rate at maximum current in the case of ROBU porous glass frits is high. However, it is lower than the maximum pressure at maximum current in the case of DURAN porous glass frits. Further, in this study, we also verified the effectiveness of ROBU glass frits when high flow rate is required and of DURAN glass frits when a high pressure is required.

  • The basic concept and preliminary performance results of a miniaturized electroosmotic (EO) pump with diaphragms were included in the present study. The separation of an electroosmotic pumping liquid from a drug using diaphragms is mainly to have a freedom in choosing an electroosmotic pumping liquid and to achieve the optimal drug delivery, and, preferably its precise control. We performed maximum flow rate, maximum pressure, and maximum current measurements with and without diaphragm designs. As a result, the effect of diaphragms on pump performance at the maximum condition is small. However, the presence of diaphragms does not allow indefinite continuous pumping.
