A Study on the Certification Method for the Application of Composite Material of eVTOL Aircraft (전기동력 수직이착륙 항공기의 복합재료 적용을 위한 소재인증 방안 고찰)

  • Urban Air Mobility is attracting attention as a future innovation industry around the world, and leading industries are considering the application of composite materials for structural robustness and lightening in the designing and manufacturing new concept eVTOL aircraft. To apply composite materials to the new concept of eVTO aircraft, this paper was analyzed about composite material qualification system of FAA & EASA and institutionalized by Korea Government, including the procedures and methods, the organization to carry out the material verification for domestic conditions. The domestic composite material qualification system will not only make it easier for manufacturers of eVTOL aircraft with a new concept to apply composite materials to domestic aircraft through pre-material qualification, but also reduce the burden of material qualification within the period of type certification. In addition, domestic manufacturers of composite materials with qualified material quality and performance will be easy to enter for domestic aircraft applications and composite material manufacturers with experience in applying to aircraft will have a positive impact on overseas exports. This system will be able to promote the development eVTOL aircraft industry of a new concept and enhance international credibility of made aircraft in Korea.

A Novel Cost Estimation Method for UAM eVTOLs (전기 추진 수직이착륙 도심 항공 모빌리티 항공기의 비용 예측 연구)

  • As increasing the feasibility of the eVTOL UAM(electric vertical take-off and landing urban air mobility), numerous corporations and laboratories are conducting researches. In the aircraft development process, estimating the cost of the aircraft is essential part in terms of budgeting and commercial viability analysis. However, it is difficult to predict the cost of an eVTOL UAM owing to various configurations and little open cost information. This paper presents a novel method to predict the vehicle cost of various eVTOL configurations by modifying previous studies of the aircraft cost estimation. A vehicle cost of Wisk Cora is calculated by the presented method as an example to illuminate the method. The method is indirectly validated by comparing the vehicle costs of six representative eVTOL aircraft with those from the UAM study reports.

  • The demand for e-VTOL aircraft is expected to be increased rapidly in the future as a means of urban transportation due to operating cost reduction, eco-friendliness and convenience of vertical take-off and landing using pilot-aids automation system. However, there are many technical hurdles to be solved in securing safety and certification which are essential for commercialization and urban operation. So far, there is no e-VTOL aircraft that has received type certificate and standard airworthiness certificate due to the technical problems and safety requirement differences with conventional aircraft. The e-VTOL aircraft certification should also meet the equivalent level of safety required by the current airworthiness standards, but there are existing problems in securing safety and meeting current standards. In this study, the e-VTOL's certification problems and technical limitations in satisfying the current standards are presented.

Flight Range and Time Analysis for Classification of eVTOL PAV (eVTOL PAV 유형별 항속거리 및 항속시간 분석)

  • To overcome ground congestions due to growing number of cars, a lot of companies have proposed personal aerial vehicle (PAV). Among PAV, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircrafts capable of vertical take-off and landing with electric power are drawing attention, and their configurations vary from multicopters to tilt ducted fans. This study tries to analyze the characteristics of each eVTOL design configurations. Parasite drag was calculated using component build up method for Vahana, Aurora, Volocopter representing each eVTOL PAV type of tilt-wing, compound, and multicopter. Wetted area and induced drag was calculated using OpenVSP and XFLR5 that are aircraft design and aerodynamic analysis software. The batteries used in the eVTOL PAV was assumed as Tesla 2170 batteries and flight ranges were calculated. Also, energy consumption and maximum flight time for the given mission profile including take-off and landing, cruising segments were compared for each eVTOL.

Cross-rotating Multi-copter (교차회전 멀티콥터)

  • To improve an aerodynamic characteristic of the eVOTL aircraft, Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) performed a validity test of the cross-rotating propeller technology. First, CFD analysis was carried out and an idea of the cross-rotating propeller to imply on a multi-copter confirmed with a commerce pitch control multi-copter that has two different blades, 0.11 and 0.21 m. After verifying the idea, a multi-copter with about 3 kg maximum take-off weight (MTOW) was custom designed to complete a ground test to measure thrust and noise. The test was performed with 15 and 22 in. propellers at the identical tip speed. The test results show that the 22 in. propeller with the cross-rotating technology required about 30 % less power and reduced 3~5 dB aerodynamic noise as compared to 15 in. propeller without cross-rotating.

  • In this study, the conceptual design of a tilt + stopped rotor type electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft was performed using design iteration. Based on Hyundai Motor's S-A1, the mission profile was defined using the concept of urban air mobility (UAM), and configuration design and aerodynamic analysis were performed using OpenVSP and XFLR5 software. After estimating the required power for the designed eVTOL, the required performance of the battery and the maximum take-off weight (MTOW) were calculated. . It was iteratively calculated using Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic Application, and a new electric motor weight estimation formula was derived. Also, the sensitivity analyses of each design variables of an eVTOL was performed using the automated program.

Research on The Crash Location and Speed Distribution of Low Altitude Fixed-Wing Aircraft (저고도 운용 고정익 항공기의 고장 시 추락지점 및 속도 분포 연구)

  • In order to solve the problem of urban traffic congestion, Urban Air Mobility (UAM) concept using Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft has been gaining popularity, and many domestic and international studies are underway. However, since these aircraft inevitably fly over densely populated areas, it is essential to ensure safety, which starts with accurately analyzing the crash risk. In this paper, the locations and impact speeds of crash are computed using six degree-of-freedom simulations of an eVTOL aircraft in a fixed-wing mode. System malfunction was modeled by a sudden loss of thrust with control surfaces being stuck during cruise. Because most of these eVTOL aircraft are still under development, a methodology of constructing a six degree-of-freedom dynamics model from generic specification is also developed. The results show that the crash locations are highly concentrated right under the aircraft within a square that has an edge length similar to the cruise altitude. Speed distribution is more complicated because almost identical crash locations can be achieved by two very different paths resulting in a large variation in the speeds.

Preliminary Conceptual Design of a Multicopter Type eVTOL using Reverse Engineering Techniques for Urban Air Mobility (도심항공 모빌리티(UAM)를 위한 역설계 기법을 사용한 멀티콥터형 eVTOL의 기본 개념설계)

  • As a means of solving traffic congestion in the downtown of large city, the interest in urban air mobility (UAM) using electric vertical take-off landing personal aerial vehicle (eVTOL PAV) is increasing. eVTOL configurations that will be used for UAM are classified by lift-and-cruise, tilt rotors, tilt-wings, tilted-ducted fans, multicopters, depending on propulsion types. This study tries to perform preliminary conceptual design for a given mission profile using reverse engineering techniques by taking the multicopter type Airbus's CityAirbus as a basic model. Wetted area, lift to drag ratio, drag coefficients were calculated using the OpenVSP which is an aerodynamic analysis software. The power required for each mission section of CityAirbus were calculated, and the corresponding battery and motor were selected. Also, total weight was predicted by estimating component weights of eVTOL.

  • This paper presents a framework, MADAM(Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design for Advanced Mobility). For the actual UAM operation, not only aircraft performances but also demand, cost and flight scenarios are in connection; the overall framework is essential for the multidisciplinary design. In this study, the framework is developed and introduced. Demand and cost analysis of Gimpo-Samseong line in the Seoul area using the framework is conducted as an example result. Also, future ticket prices are estimated by applying changes in the aspects of major cost components and the price, ₩76,000, is calculated with the target for maximizing the total profit in the year 2035.
