  • The application of the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methodology to analyze the environmental burden of appling the digestates to corn field including different swine waste treatment systems was investigated. The first part of LCA is an inventory of parameters used to emissions released due to the system under investigation. In the following step, the Life Cycle Impact Assessment, the inventory data were analyzed and aggregated in order to finally get one index representing the each environmental burden. Each corn field applied with the aerobic and anaerobic digestates including different swine waste treatment systems was used as an example for the life cycle impact analysis. With analyzing the agricultural environmental burden, it observed that the effect of corn field applied aerobic digestate including digestion system was 7.6 times higher at eutrophication effects, but global warming potential effect was 0.9 times less than its applied anaerobic digestate.

  • Life cycle assessment was carried out to evaluate the environmental values of dimethylas a diesel alternative fuel with the assumption of dimethyl ether production from natural gas via synthesis gas. The whole life cycles from raw material acquisitions to the final usages of diesel and dimethyl ether were involved in the assessment. Inventory analysis showed that the most significant environmental impacts came from resource depletions and air emissions. Impact assessment revealed that dimethyl ether was environmentally better in the aspect of human health and ecosystem quality but worse in resource depletions compared with diesel fuel. Suggestions for environmental improvement of dimethyl ether as a diesel alternative fuel were prepared based on the assessment results.

  • In this study, simplified LCA (life cycle assessment) tool was developed to increase accessibility and availability on LCA timber construction. The result of simplified LCA was compared with commercial program on LCA (Simapro.7) to verify its availability. As a result of evaluating environmental impacts with the Life Cycle Inventory of all processes, gap between LCA and simplified LCA tools of timber construction was about 1%. Therefore, the simplified LCA tool could analyse greenhouse gas emissions of timber construction and to expand number of data set through improved conveniency of users for developing database of timber construction in Korea. The reduction effects of greenhouse gas emissions of timber construction was about 53% of total emission offset up to construction phase. The results of this study would support decision making process to expand to timber construction policy to showcase environmental friendliness of timber construction. It was expected to contribute to response to the New climate regime in forestry.

  • In this work, we analyzed correlations between life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and life-cycle cost of energy resources. Energy resources studied in this paper include coal, natural gas, nuclear power, hydropower, geothermal energy, wind power, solar thermal energy, and solar photovoltaic energy, and all of them are used to generate electricity. We calculated the mean values, ranges of maximum minus minimum values, and ranges of 90% confidence interval of life-cycle GHG emissions and life-cycle cost of each energy resource. Based on the values, we plotted them in two dimensional graphs to analyze a relationship and characteristics between GHG emissions and cost. Besides, to analyze the technical maturity, the GHG emissions and the range of minimum and maximum values were compared to each other. For the electric generation, energy resources are largely inverse proportional to the GHG emission and the corresponding cost.

  • As the seriousness of the global environment is gaining our attention recently, studies on application of LCA(Life Cycle Assessment) to ship are being carried dynamically in various industry fields. However domestic study on LCA was not carried out in various fields. This study was carried out to examine the application of LCA to ship and was focused on the ship operation inventory analysis especially in life cycle assessment. Two training ships of Mokpo maritime university were adopted as ship models. Actual voyage data of at last several years was used to analysis the ship's exhaust gas inventory. The analysis shows how many weight of gas being exhaused per 1 gross tonnage and per 1 trainee in the training ships.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of environmental impact from the construction phase of a high-speed railway through a Life Cycle Assessment method based on the materials used and the energy consumption of the equipment used according to the design statement. The results reveal that the contributions to environmental impact in the construction sector of a high-speed railway were 89% for civil engineering, 7% for the track system, 2% for stations and 2% for the energy and telecommunication system. In particular, the highest contribution to the impact in the civil engineering category were 54% for Global Warming, 25% for Abiotic Resource Depletion and 8% for Photochemical Oxidant Creation. The main influence factors were the use of remicon and cement. In future, the application of Life Cycle Assessment for the construction sector of railway construction will introduce efficient reduction methods according to the quantitative calculation of environmental impact.

  • The objective of this study is to present the design approach of low $CO_2$ concrete structures for reduction of $CO_2$ emissions. The design approach was implemented considering the system boundary for each processing presented in the ISO 13315-2. As for life-cycle inventory(LCI) for $CO_2$ assessment of concrete structures, data provided from domestic LCI DB was used. Based on the process presented in this study, case studies on the life-cycle $CO_2$ assessment of shear wall concrete structure was conducted. As substitution level of GGBS is 25%, the amount of $CO_2$ emissions and $CO_2$ uptake by concrete carbonation was decreased in the material, demolition and crushing, and transport phase. The amount of $CO_2$ emissions of column and total member was decreased by 26% and 22% respectively, compared to that of OPC.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the strength characteristics of concrete according to the mixing ratio of recycled fine aggregates and to use it as basic data for the use of recycled fine aggregates in concrete. For this purpose, the target design compression strength was set at 27MPa. Considering practical use of recycled aggregate, the mixing ratio of recycled fine aggregate was set at 0, 30, 60, and 100%, and the unconfined concrete and hardened concrete were tested. The LCA method was used to evaluate the environmental impact of recycled fine aggregate concrete, and the effectiveness of recycled fine aggregate in the production of concrete was verified.
