  • This study aims to optimize the appropriate concentration of fertilizers for Sageretia thea by analyzing growth performances (height and root collar diameter) and physiological characteristics (photosynthesis, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll fluorescence reaction). As fertilizer concentration was increased to 1.5 g·L-1, growth increased, but it decreased at 2.0 g·L-1 treatment. Root collar diameter growth was reduced because of higher fertilizer concentrations. Photosynthesis reactions showed the highest CO2 reaction curves, maximum photosynthesis rate, and maximum carboxylation rate in the 1.5 g·L-1 fertilizer treatment. The chlorophyll fluorescence reaction and SPAD values revealed that fertilizer treatment improves photosynthesis efficiency and robustness compared with untreated control. Therefore, the appropriate fertilizer concentration for producing good seedling quality of Sageretia thea is 1.0~1.5 g·L-1.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the proper nitrogen application methods under the different seedling density in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice. Seedling density was adjusted as 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150ea/$m^2$ just after emergence and nitrogen was applied with five methods including conventional respectively. The maximum tillering stage was shorten as the seedling density was increase but decreased the percentage of productive tillers. Lodging was occurred serverely as the seedling was more than 120ea/$m^2$, when nitrogen was applied at panicle initiation stage. Grain yield wasn't significantly different among seedling densities when it was more than 60ea/$m^2$, but the density of 30ea/$m^2$ was decreased. It wasn't significantly different among the nitrogen application methods when it was more than 90ea/m, but was higher at early application of tillering fertilizer (T$_2$) than conventional method when the seedling density was less than 60ea/$m^2$. Supposing that the yield of reseeding is the same as optimum seedling density, minimum seedling density needs for reseeding would be less than 55 ea/$m^2$ as the aspect of income allowed for managing expense.

  • This study aimed to determine the optimal fertilization level for the production of Hovenia dulcis Thunb. seedlings. The height, root collar diameter, biomass, seedling quality index, and chlorophyll content of Hovenia dulcis container seedlings (1-0) according to six fertilization treatments (control, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 g·L-1) were investigated. The height, root collar diameter, and biomass of Hovenia dulcis container seedlings increased with increasing fertilization, but there were no significant differences among the ≥1.5 g·L-1 treatments, and the 2.5 g·L-1 fertilization treatment was associated with significantly lower height growth. The seedling-quality index showed a high but non-significant difference in the ≥1.5 g·L-1 treatment range, and the chlorophyll content was highest in the 1.5 g·L-1 treatment group. Considering the environmental and cost aspects of fertilization, the appropriate level of fertilization required for superior container seedling production of Hovenia dulcis was 1.5 g·L-1, and a minimum fertilization treatment of ≥0.5 g·L-1 should be applied to meet the minimum seedling specifications. These results are expected to be used as basic data for establishing an efficient seedling-production system and stable supply of Hovenia dulcis, which is used as a medicinal and honey plant.

  • An attempt was made to investigate the yield response to the N P K fertilizer application for barley, soybean, corn, garlic, onion and potato in the famers' fields from 1971 to 1989. 1. The yield index of without-fertilizers plot when yield of N P K plot is regarded as 100, were 43~92 in plot without N, 71~94 in plot without $P_2O_5$ and 88~96 in plot without $K_2O$. The effects of each fertilizer application for upland crops were greater in barley, potato and corn for N, barley and soybean cultivated in reclaimed soil for $P_2O_5$ and potato and barley for $K_2O$. 2. The optimum levels of N, P and K fertilizers varied with the kinds of soil and crop in the ranges of 4.0~23.2kg/10a for N, 6.0~45.0kg/10a for $P_2O_5$ and 6.6~21.9kg/10a for $K_2O$. 3. The efficiencies of applied fertilizers were increased in cultivated soil in comparison with the reclaimed soil and the efficiencies were in order of potato, onion>barley, corn>soybean. 4. The regression equations of fertilizer recommendation for 5 crops excepting onion were obtained from relations between the organic matter in soil and the amount of N fertilizer applied, between the available $P_2O_5$ in soil and the amount of P fertilizer applied, and between the exchangeable K of soil and the amount of K fertilizer applied. 5. The reduced rates of P and K fertilizer application based on soil testing varied with regions in the ranges of 11.8~80.0 and 0~62.5%, respectively. And the recommendation for N fertilizer amount was necessary to increase or decrease depending on regions.

  • This experiment was conducted in 2001 to investigate the effect of four nitrogen levels (0, 5.5, 11, 16.5kg/10a) on the yield and quality of vice especially with respect to eating quality. One early-maturing variety (Daejinbyeo) and two mid-late-maturing varieties (Ilpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo) were used in this experiment. Rice yields of all varieties were increased by the higher rate of nitrogen application, mainly due to a larger number of panicles per m2. Head rice ratio was reduced significantly with an increased rate of nitrogen, while immature vice ratio was increased significantly. Increasing the nitrogen application rate, a considerable increase of protein content was found in all tested rice varieties. Palatability value of Daejinbyeo and Ilpumbyeo measured by rice taster was not affected by nitrogen application rate ranging from 0 to 11 kg/10a, but it was decreased significantly at the rate of 16.5kg/10a. In contrast, the palatability value of Chucheongbyeo was decreased significantly by increasing nitrogen application at the whole application rate. A positive correlation was found between nitrogen application rate and protein content (r=$0.88^{**}\textrm{-}0.96^{**}$), but head rice (r=$-0.84^{**}$~$-0.91^{**}$) and palatability value (r=$-0.72^{**}$~$-0.85^{**}$) showed a negative correlation with the nitrogen application rate. Regardless of the fact that eleven aroma-active volatile compounds were detected in cooked vice of Chucheongbyeo, it was concluded that the aroma-active volatile compounds of cooked rice was not affected by the different nitrogen application rate. The results of this study showed that the standard nitrogen fertilization rate of 11kg/10a could be appropriate considering both rice yield and palatability.

  • A new oil crop chufa(Cyperus esculentus var. sativus) was studied to evaluate the yield potential of tuber and productivity of leaf as a new forage crop resources. Response to nitrogen fertilizer was not clear, showing low yield over 10kg/l0a of nitrogen application. Tuber yield was higher at 50cm $\times$ 15cm and 50cm$\times$20cm of planting population of tuber. Planting at early May showed high tuber yield, and sprouting tuber planting could not increased the tuber yield. The plant height of Chufa is 126cm, and the number of tiller per $\m^2$ are 671. It is moderate to lodging, but susceptable according to the amount of field products. Fresh forage and dry matter yield of above ground of chufa were 2,135kg/10a, and 590kg/l0a, respectively. The contents of crude protein, ether extract, fiber, ash, and acid detergent fiber are 24.8%, 8.1%, 38%, 64.4%, 52.8%, and 55.9%, respectively. It was considered that the nutritive value of chufa leaf in maturing stage was so good as rice straw.

  • The use of nitrogen fertilizer in intensive agricultural production is of major concern due to its role on agricultural productivity and water quality. Crop production inputs on farm are usually applied at a uniform rate across an entire field. However, actual input requirements often vary within fields. The field variations in yield potential, soil moisture, soil N status, and the efficiency of fertilizer use, uniform application of crop production inputs does not allow optimum efficiency or profitability. This occurs because uniform application often results in areas of over- and under-application which may affect water quality and crop yield. This study used biophysical and economic models to assess the economic feasibility and water quality benefits of site specific nitrogen management for 10 soil types and 35 sample fields in Goodwater Creek watershed located near Centralia, Missouri. Results showed that the economic feasibility and water quality benefits of variable rate application were sensitive to the distribution of soil types within a field. Variable rate(VR) application was not uniformly more profitable than uniform rate(UR) application for the four agricultural systems evaluated and the water quality benefits were insubstantial relative to uniform application of N.

  • Nowadays, Korean farmers rely more on chemical fertilizers than low input sustainable agriculture drawn from the farm itself. In order to improve soil nutritional imbalance for environment friendly agriculture in greenhouse, we have carried out a relationship between fertilizer application level, and soil chemical properties for strawberry cultivation at 56 sites in Chungnam Province. Average amount of nitrogen as basal fertilization was 92.3 Mg $ha^{-1}$ which higher 2.6 times compared to standard amount of basal fertilizer. In case of compost application more than 30 Mg $ha^{-1}$, excessive ratio compared to optimum level was higher 1.8 times for EC value, 3.0 times for available phosphate, 2.6 times for exchangeable potassium, 1.7 times for exchangeable calcium, and 1.6 times for exchangeable magnesium, respectively. Amounts of compost application significantly correlated with available phosphate (r=0.370, $p{\leq}0.01$), exchangeable potassium(r=0.429, $p{\leq}0.01$), exchangeable calcium(r=0.404, $p{\leq}0.01$), exchangeable magnesium(r=0.453, $p{\leq}0.01$), and exchangeable sodium(r=0.369, $p{\leq}0.01$), respectively. Our results suggest that soil nutrients management for sustainable agriculture was optimum fertilization based on soil testing for strawberry cultivation in greenhouse.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of organic fertilization rates on the nutrient accumulation and recovery in radish (Raphanus sativus L.) as well as growth and yield of radish in Jeju island. An understanding the relationships between organic fertilization rate, crop nutrient recovery and crop yield can assist in making organic fertilizer recommendation which balances crop value and environmental risk in organic cultivation. Nitrogen (T-N), phosphate ($P_2O_5$) and potassium ($K_2O$) were applied at 0, 115-35-40, 230-70-80 (standard application rate), 460-140-160, 230-200-100 (recommended application rate) and 158-53-35 kg/ha (customary application rate), respectively as the broadcast application of mixed organic fertilizer (N 4.5% - $P_2O_5$ 1.5% - $K_2O$ 1%) in combination with langbeinite ($K_2O$ 22%), 100% at sowing period. The organic fertilizer was made of organic materials like oil cakes. Total yield of radish, as fresh weight of roots, increased with increasing organic fertilizer doses to a maximum at rate of standard or soil-testing application. Nitrogen, phosphate and potassium accumulations of radish increased curvilinearly with increasing organic fertilization rate to a maximum at rate of N 460 - $P_2O_5$ 140 - $K_2O$ 160 kg/ha. However, nitrogen, phosphate and potassium use efficiency of applied organic fertilizer decreased curvilinearly or linearly with increasing organic fertilization rate. Application of organic fertilizer in combination with langbeinite (as a potassium source) had significant effect on the yield of radish. Organic fertilization on a basis of standard or soil-testing application rate is recommended for maximun radish yield in organic cultivation.

  • The investigations were conducted to improve the fertilizer use in upland soil on the different topographies, and crops at 163 upland fields located in the parts of Gyengsangbuk-do area. The soil distribution was based on crops, and topographiese. Soils from these fields were analyzed for pH, organic mater, available phosphorus ($P_2O_5$), exchangeable potassium, calcium and magnesium, and found to have pH5.9, organic mater 23.2 g $kg^{-1}$, $P_2O_5$ 549 mg $kg^{-1}$, exchangeable potassium, calcium and magnesium were 0.9, 5.6, and 2.3 $cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. The excessive distribution percent of soil samples for crops were higher than the optimum range in $P_2O_5$, and exchangeable potassium. The content of organic matter, $P_2O_5$, exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium were increased with the decreasing slope. The major chemical components in fans topographies were 28.4 g $kg^{-1}$ for organic matter, 700 mg $kg^{-1}$ for $P_2O_5$, and 1.0 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for exchangeable potassium relatively higher in comparison with other topographies. The content of $P_2O_5$ were lower in diluvium, and hilly areas than other topographies. The soil of red pepper was more influenced by the amount of applied fertility than the slope, and topographies, On the other hand the crops like soybean and sesame, were more affected by the slope, and topographies.
