  • Yams (Dioscorea spp), which are edible or medicinal tuber crops, are a important crop in South Korea. Yams require a high level of soil fertility. The various cultural practices such as fertilizing and plowing were tested for marketable tuber production in Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita). Tuber yield was also affected by organic matters in soil. Application higher level of organic matters result in increased each tuber weight and tuber yield per unit area. The nutrient absorption quantity of the plant such as nitrogen, phosphoric acid, calcium and potassium was increased from 100~120 days after planting, which time to begin tuber enlargement. The tuber yield was increased when the fertilization increased in quantity. Total yield and marketable ratio were the highest in 31~32 kg/10a of nitrogen fertilizer. From above result, income become larger with increase of marketable yield and quality improvement at 63% (27 kg/10a) level of conventional N fertilization (43 kg/10a). The tuber yield was not significantly different between with in various application level of potash fertilizer. Tuber size and weight decreased accordingly to decreased fertilizing level, so the rates of small tubers increased greatly at cultivation without chemical fertilizer. In considering the accumulation rates of allantoin in Chinese yam tubers, the apt harvest season was after October. The allantoin quantity of it was not influenced with nitrogen fertilizing. Moreover it was advantageous with decrease of chemical fertilizer and appropriate fertilizing in soil environment protection. Commercial tuber's number and yield were increased in trenching before planting with trencher compared with rotavating with tractor.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of seeding methods and application levels of nitrogen fertilizer on the yield and forage quality of whole crop rice (WCR). The WCR variety "Namil" was directly seeded on April 25 and transplanted on May 25. Five levels of nitrogen fertilizer were applied (90, 110, 140, 170 and 200 kg/ha). There were no significant differences (p<0.05) of the emergence date, heading date and disease resistance based on the nitrogen fertilizer rates; however, the WCR became dark at higher nitrogen fertilizer rates. The plant height increased at higher nitrogen fertilizer rates and the tiller number showed the same trend. In contrast to a direct seeding method, transplanting increased the tiller number. The dry matter (DM) content did not show a certain tendency based on nitrogen fertilizer rates, while the fresh and dry matter yields increased with incremental changes of the nitrogen fertilizer rates (p<0.01), and the transplant method increased the yield size. In yield analysis, the plot direct-seeded with 140 kg N/ha and the transplanting with 170kg N/ha showed the highest yields. The crude protein (CP) content increased with higher nitrogen fertilizer rate, but there was no significant differences between transplant and direct-seeding methods. The content of ADF (acid detergent fiber) and NDF (neutral detergent fiber) increased with higher nitrogen fertilizer rate, but total digestible nutrient (TDN) content decreased with increased nitrogen levels. Although high nitrogen applications increased the fresh and DM yields, the 140 kg/ha nitrogen fertilizer level is recommended as the proper nitrogen fertilizer level, considering both yield and the environments.

  • This study was conducted to determine the appropriate fertilization level for growing one year old rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala KOIDZ. According to N and K amounts were increased, the growth of above-ground parts was decreased but P was increased at this time. Based on N-P-K levels, application of 8-9-3 kg/10a was the most effectiveness for the growth of above-ground part, and 8-3-3 kg/10a for that of underground part. It can be estimated that 6-4-6 kg/10a treatment based on N-P-K may be the optimum fertilization level to obtain the highest yield of Atractylodes macrocephala KOIDZ using one year old rhizome.

  • The yield of rice is increased to amounts of fertilizer applied in paddy field but excessive application of fertilizer stimulates outbreaks of disease and insect pest. If, therefore, diseases and pests stimulated by excessive application of fertilizer would be effectively controlled, increaseed yield of rice would be possible. This experiment was conducted to determine the fertilizer application rate that would produce maximum yields when diseases and pests are controlled. 1. The fertilizer application rates and the incidence of leaf and apanicle blast were positively correlated at the $1\%$ level. 2, Without disease and pest control the maximum yield of hulled rice was 347-378kg/10a, which occurred at nitorgen application levels of 8.0-8.5 kg/10a. with effective control of diseases and pests the maximum yield of hulled was 453-462 kg/10a, which occurred at nitrogen application levels of 18.5-19.0 kg/10a. Yield increase at appropriate nitrogen levels by disease and pest control resulted in more than 100 kg/10a. 3. There was no significant yield difference between the NPK experimental plots with fixed PK levels and with varying PK levels. 4. The maximum effect of disease and pest .control as expressed biy yield index of hulled rice was $65\%$, the minimum effect was $30\%$, the average effects were $42-45\%$.

  • To verify suitability of the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber, chemical changes of soil, growth characteristics and yield of cucumber as affected by conventional fertigation method (Control), the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture (DNF) and Yamasaki cucumber recipe (YCR) were investigated. At 48 days after transplant, photosynthetic and transpiration rate of cucumber leaves were the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2 strength of YCR, but not different with the Control, in the later growing period photosynthetic rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and YCR and was clearly different with the Control, transpiration rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2, 1 strengths of YCR. The growth and yield of cucumber, nutrient elements of cucumber leaves except for calcium were more in DNF and YCR than in the Control. Compared with pre-treated loam soil, pH of the soil was low and electric conductivity was high in all treatments, amounts of accumulated phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were much in the higher concentrations per the kinds of nutrient solutions. From the above results, it was considered that the developed nutrient solution has suitability as nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber.

  • In order to improve a soil test-based fertilization model for nitrogen, the Mitscherlich-Baule-Spillman equation modified by Bray and his coworkers was introduced and tested for its possibility of application. The coefficients $C_1$ and $C_2$ in the equation A were calculated by applying 10 pot experimental results done by the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. Then, a regression(B) between C_1 and x, the fertilizer level was estimated. log(Ymax-Y) = logYmax-$C_1x-C_2b$ (A) where Ymax : maximum yield. Y : yield without or with a limited amount of fertilizer applied, x : application level of fertilizer, b : content of a nutrient in soil, $C_1$ and $C_2$ : coefficients of x and b, respectively. log(0.05)=$-C_1x-C_2b$ (B) Fertilizer requirement calculated by the equation B was significantly correlated with the real level of fertilizer applied for 95 percentage of the maximum yield. A more extensive and precise study on $C_1$ and $C_2$ in the equation A in expected to improve significantly the fitness of soil analysis to the fertilizer recommendation.

  • Nitrogen responses to yield and other agronomic characters were studied using four rice varieties, Tongil, Jinheung, Milyang 23, and Yushin, at six nitrogen levels, 0, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30kg/10a, in a silt loam soil at the Crop Experiment Station, Suweon, Korea, in 1976. Grain yields of Milyang 23 and Tongil were much higher than those of Jinheung and Yushin at high nitrogen levels (15-30kg/10a). Optimum nitrogen levels of the rice varieties, Tongil, Milyng 23, Yushin, and Jinheung, estimated by intersecting straight line, were 22, 19, 19, and 12kg/10a, respectively. Morpshological characters, dry matter production before and after heading, and yield components were dicussed in relation to the nitrogen responsivenees of the rice varieties. In addition, relationships between yield, yield components, and other agronomic characters were discussed to obtain some informations for higher rice yield.

  • To investigate the proper fertilization position in the soil accumulated with phosphorus and salt, tomato, Seo-Kwang, was planted on the bottomless pot, 45cm diameter 30cm length, filled with three different soils ranged 567 to 1,140 ppm of available phosphorus (0.45~3.69 mmhos/cm in electrical conductivity). Fertilizer phosphorus was treated at three different sites of side 0~5,6~10, 11~15cm and three different sites of depth; 0~5, 6~10, 11~15cm, The results are follows; Fertilizer use efficiency (FUE) of phosphrous of tomato was decreased as avilable phosphorus in soil increased. Highest FOE of phosphorus was showed at band application of feliilizer phosphorus at 0~5cm side and 11~15cm depth in the soil contain ing 567ppm of available phosphorus, and 6~10cm side and 0~5cm depth in the soils containing 942 and 1,140ppm of phosphorus. At 45 days after planting tomato root was highly distribued to 0~5cm side and depth respectively in low salt soil (0.45mmhos/cm), 11~15cm depth in 2.61mmhos/cm soil and 6~10cm depth in 3.69mmhos/cm. The fertilizer use efficiency of phosphorus of tomato plant war negatively significantly correlated with soil EC and phosphate concentration at 45 days after planting. The fertilizer use efficiency of phosphorus was more highly correlated with available phosphorus than electrical conductivity in soil.

  • Proper light intensity, shading tolerance, potting media, and fertilization level were investigated to develop Orostachys iwarenge for. magnus (Korean name, Ullungyeonwhabawisol) as a potted ornamental plant. The plants were grown under different light intensity (52, 82, 90, and 97% shading). The best growth was shown at 52% shading, which indicated that the proper light intensity for O. iwarenge for. magnus is less than 52% of shading. Plant growth decreased severely at 82% shading and leaf color became lighter as the shading rate increased, which indicated that O. iwarenge for. magnus has no tolerance against low light intensity. To select a proper potting media, decomposed granite (DG), fertilizer-amended media (FAM), river sand (RS) were used as potting medium with different ratio of 60:20:20 (DG:FAM:RS, v/v/v), 80:20 (DG:FAM, v/v), 60:40 (DG:FAM, v/v), and 20:80 (FAM:RS, v/v). DG:FAM:RS (60:20:20) showed the highest values in shoot fresh weight, plant width, and number of runner in potted O. iwarenge for. magnus. Fresh weight of shoot part was 16 g in DG:FAM:RS (60:20:20), which was about 2 folds of those at the other medium. At the experiment for selection of proper fertilization level, plants showed a better growth as the concentration of hyponex solution and application frequency increased. Once drenching 1 week interval of hyponex solution diluted by 1,000 folds brought the highest results in fresh weight, plant width, and runner number. Particularly, fresh weight of shoot part was 35 g at once drenching per week of 1,000 folds solution, indicating 84% improvement comparing with non treatment (19 g).

  • An attempt was made to provide the most resonable fertilizer recommendation for sesame and peanut crops based on soil analytical data and yield response to the NPK fertilizer application, which were obtained from field experiments conducted during 1970 to 1993. 1. According to the analytical data of sesame and peanut soils obtained in 1985~1993, the contents of organic matter, available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable K, Ca and Mg were increased in sesame soils, but the those components were decreased in peanut soils. 2. The yield index of the plot without N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ fertilizer were 81-84, 84~92 and 81~92, respectively, as the yield of NPK plot was regarded as 100. 3. Linear or quadratic equations derived from the relationship between soil analysis data and fertilizer application rates were proposed for NPK recommendation. The parameters of soil analysis used in the equations for N, P and K were organic matter, available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable K, respectively. 4. Revised fertilizer recommendation based on the soil chemical status enable to save the fertilizer application of sesame and peanut soils. The amounts of saved NPK fertilizers were 5.1kg N/10a(increase in 2.8kg N/10a for peanut), 0.9~2.9kg $P_2O_5/10a$, and 1.7~5.8kg $K_2O$/10a.
