  • In this study, the distortional behaviors of tub-section steel girders subjected to torsional loading were analyzed, and predictor equations were developed for estimating the member forces induced in the internal bracing system installed in the steel tub girders. Torsional loadings originated either by eccentric vertical loading or girder curvature were decomposed into the pure torsional force component that does not affect the distortional box deformation, and into the distortional force component that directly induces box distortion. The axial member forces induced in the internal cross frames were formulated as a function of the magnitude of torsional loading through the analytical investigation of the interactions between the distortional force component and internal cross frames. To verify the proposed equations, three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA) was conducted for the straight simple-span girder and the three-span continuous girder samples. Very good agreement was found between the member forces from the FEA and the proposed equations.

  • Track elastic components can be technically and economically efficient when integrated well into track superstructure of a railway network. In such cases, the elastic rail pad is larger than a 800m radius curve provides smooth rail branching and allows for high-speed operation ($V{\geq}160km/h$). High track resistance causes the tamping intervals to stand out because the constantly increasing share of the sleeper pad further extends the increase of the tamping interval and the long grinding period; the engineering and construction of the small curve radius track provides some measures for reducing the solid sounds. Installation of elastic mats under the ballast can have a good effect, particularly in the context of protection against dust during construction or extensive renovation measures when laying new lines. However, such a process requires special attention and proper installation.

  • This study proposes a penetration model in soil considering the wake separation and reattachment based on the integrated force law (IFL). Rigid body dynamics, the IFL, and semi-empirical resistance function about soil are utilized to formulate the motion of the hard projectile. The model can predict the trajectory in soil considering the spherical cavity expansion phenomenon under various oblique angles and angles of attack (AOA). The Mohr-Coulomb yield model is utilized as the resistance function of the soil. To confirm the feasibility of the proposed model, a comparative study is conducted with experimental results described in the open literature. From the comparative study, the penetration depth estimated from the proposed model had about 13.4% error compared to that of the experimental results. In general, the finite element method is widely used to predict the trajectory in soil for a projectile. However, it takes considerable time to construct the computational model for the projectile and perform the numerical simulation. The proposed model only needs to the dimension of the projectile and can predict the trajectory of the projectile in a few seconds.

  • This study investigated the structural performance of wire-integrated steel decks with varied lattice end support conditions through finite element analysis. The results indicated that the steel decks with the lattice foots positioned above the supporting structural member have the higher system stiffness compared to the cases with the lattice foots shifted away from the support. It is also observed that the contribution of the end vertical bars on both the system stiffness and the strength is negligible when the lattice foots are located on the support. It is, especially, revealed that the end vertical bars can be eliminated when the lattice foot length is not smaller than 40mm. The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the system is not significantly affected by the lattice end support condition. The failure mode of the system is the top bar buckling at the center of the deck plate, the lattice end buckling, and the combination of both depending of design intention.

  • Purpose: This study aims to analyze the fire resistance performance applied to plant facilities with high fire risk in Korea, secure suitable fire resistance performance, and ensure the fire safety of plant facilities. Method: Using the finite element analysis program Ansys, thermal transfer analysis and structural analysis were performed with fire load and fireproof coating as variables, and the fire resistance performance of plant facilities was analyzed based on the analysis results. Result: The fireproof coating applied to domestic plant facilities failed to secure fire resistance performance when the fire load of hydrocarbon fire presented in UL 1709 was applied, and it was confirmed that the deformation of steel after the fire was also significant. Conclusion: The current fire resistance performance applied to plant facilities in Korea cannot secure fire resistance performance in sudden fire growth and large fire loads like petrochemical plants, and it is necessary to secure fire safety by evaluating suitable fire resistance performance through performance evaluation of plant facilities.

  • Flat-plate building systems are utilized extensively for construction of apartments, hotels and office buildings because of short construction period, low floor-to-floor height and flexibility in plan design. Recently, to increase lateral seismic resistance of flat-plate building systems, wall-columns are used frequently. Therefore, to estimate strength of flat-plate column connection accurately, the effect of column section shape on the behavior of flat-plate column connection should be considered properly, In the present study, a numerical analysis was performed for interior connections of continuous flat-plate to analyze the effect of column section shape. For the purpose, a computer program for nonlinear FE analysis was developed, and the validity was verified. Through the parametric study, the variations of shear stress distribution around the connection were investigated. According to the result of numerical analysis, as the length of the cross section of column in the direction of lateral load increases, the effective area and the maximum shear strength providing the torsional resistance decrease considerably. Therefore, these effects should be considered properly to estimate the strength of flat-plate connection accurately.

  • Purpose: This study is aimed to assess changes of stress distribution dependent on different connection lengths and placement of the fixture top relative to the ridge crest. Materials and methods: The internal-conical connection implant which has a hexagonal anti-rotation index was used for FEM analysis on stress distribution in accordance with connection length of fixture-abutment. Different connection lengths of 2.5 mm, 3.5 mm, and 4.5 mm were designed respectively with the top of the fixture flush with residual ridge crest level, or 2 mm above. Therefore, a total of 6 models were made for the FEM analysis. The load was 170 N and 30-degree tilted. Results: In all cases, the maximum von Mises stress was located adjacent to the top portion of the fixture and ridge crest in the bone. The longer the connection length was, the lower the maximum von Mises stress was in the fixture, abutment, screw and bone. The reduction rate of the maximum von Mises stress depending on increased connection length was greater in the case of the fixture top at 2 mm above the ridge crest versus flush with the ridge crest. Conclusion: It was found that the longer the connection length, the lower the maximum von Mises stress appears. Furthermore, it will help prevent mechanical or biological complications of implants.

  • Unlike water or air quality standards that have been established by legislation using potential human health impact as the primary criterion, soil quality depends on the soils primary function and its relevant environmental factors, which is much more site- and soil specific. A properly characterized soil quality assessment system should serve as an indicator of the soil capacity to produce safe and nutritious food, to enhance human and animal health, and to overcome degrative processes. For our proposed example, a high quality soil with regard to maintaining an adequate soil productivity as a food production resources must accommodate soil and water properties, food chain, sustainability and utilization, environment, and profitability, that (i) facilitate water transfer and absorption, (ii) sustain plant growth, (iii) resist physical degradation of soil, (iv) produce a safe food resources, (v) cost-effective agricultural management. Possible soil quality indicators are identified at several levels within the framework for each of these functions. Each indicator is assigned a priority or weight that reflects its relative importance using a multi-objective approach based on principles of systems to be considered. To do this, individual scoring system is differentiated by the several levels from low to very high category or point scoring ranging from 0 to 10, And then weights are multiplied and products are summed to provide an overall soil quality rating based on several physical and chemical indicators. Tlne framework and procedure in developing the soil quality assessment are determined by using information collected from an alternative and conventional farm practices in the regions. The use of an expanded framework for assessing effects of other processes, management practices, or policy issues on soil quality is also considered. To develop one possible form for a soil quality index, we should permit coupling the soil characteristics with assessment system based on soil properties and incoming and resident chemicals. The purpose of this paper is to discuss approaches to defining and assessing soil quality and to suggest the factors to be considered.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rigidity of post core systems on stress distribution by the theoretical technique, finite element stress-analysis method. Three-dimensional finite element models simulating an endodontically treated maxillary central incisor restored with a zirconia ceramic crown were prepared and 1.5 mm ferrule height was provided. Each model contained cortical bone, trabecular bone, periodontal ligament, 4 mm apical root canal filling, and post-and-core. Six combinations of three parallel type post (zirconia ceramic, glass fiber, and stainless steel) and two core (Paracore and Tetric ceram) materials were evaluated, respectively. A 50 N static occlusal load was applied to the palatal surface of the crown with a $60^{\circ}$angle to the long axis of the tooth. The differences in stress transfer characteristics of the models were analyzed. von Mises stresses were chosen for presentation of results and maximum displacement and hydrostatic pressure were also calculated. An increase of the elastic modulus of the post material increased the stress, but shifted the maximum stress location from the dentin surface to the post material. Buccal side of cervical region (junction of core and crown) of the glass fiber post restored tooth was subjected to the highest stress concentration. Maximum von Mises stress in the remaining radicular tooth structure for low elastic modulus resin core (29.21 MPa) was slightly higher than that for high elastic modulus resin core (29.14 MPa) in case of glass fiber post. Maximum displacement of glass fiber post restored tooth was higher than that of zirconia ceramic or stainless steel post restored tooth.
