Review on bioleaching of uranium from low-grade ore (저품위(低品位) 우라늄철(鑛)의 미생물 침출법(浸出法))

  • This review describes the involvement of different microorganisms for the recovery of uranium from the ore. Mainly Acidithiobacillus forrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans are found to be the most widely used bacteria in the bioleaching process of uranium. The bioleaching of uranium generally follows indirect mechanism in which bacteria provide the ferric iron required to oxidize $U^{4+}$. Commercial applications of bioleaching have been incorporated for extracting valuable metals, due to its favorable process economics and reduced environmental problems compared to conventional metal recovery processes such as smelting. At present the uranium is recovered through main bioleaching techniques employed by heap, dump and in situ leaching. Process development has included recognition of the importance of aeration of bioheaps, and improvements in stirred tank reactor design and operation. Concurrently, knowledge of the key microorganisms involved in these processes has advanced, aided by advances in molecular biology to characterize microbial populations.

Resource Estimation of Ugii Nuur Fe-Mn Occurrence Area, Mongolia (몽골 우기누르 철-망간 산출지 자원량 평가)

  • Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) and Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia (MRAM) performed test drilling in the right side of Deposit 2 in Ugii Nuur Fe-Mn occurrence area, Mongolia. It was decided to perform the drilling with 65 degree of drilling angle due to the technological limit of low angle drilling and designed to find ore bodies in cores between 50 m and 70 m. Ore bodies were found in lower depths than expected probably due to the folds in the subsurface in three drilling sites other than drilling position 3. Ore body in drilling position 3 was found in the similar depths with the expected depths. In drilling position 1, high Fe bearing ore body (more than 40%) was found between 47.45 and 50 m and between 56.35 and 57.1 m. The rest of ore body in drilling position 1 and ore bodies in other three sites have low Fe contents with about 10% of Fe. In drilling position 1, maximum and average Mn contents are about 10% and 1%, respectively, and in other three sites, average Mn contents are about 0.2%. Whereas Mn contents are low, Fe and Mn contents show very similar variations with varying depths, suggesting that they were moved and concentrated together in the ore genesis process. Proved resources estimated for the ore bodies confirmed by drilling are Fe 231,661 tonne with 11.82% of the average Fe grade. Possible resources supposing that ore bodies of DP-1 and DP-2 are connected and those of DP-3 and DP-4 are connected are Fe 4,415,296 tonne with 11.82% of the average Fe grade. The possibility of development of this area based on the estimated resources is low because the ore grade is low.

Low Temperature sintering Mg-Zn Ferrites (저손실 Mg-Zn 페라이트의 저온소결화)

  • 본 논문에서는 최근 고품위 TV 및 고정세도 디스플레이용으로 화상의 정세도를 향상시키기 위해 수평주파수를 높이려는 움직임이 있어, 편향 요크용 페라이트 코아에는 고주파수 영역에 있어서도 코아로스가 낮은 재료가 요구되고 있는 실정이다. Mg-Zn 페라이트에 있어서 화학조성 및 프로세스가 미세구조에 미치는 영향에 착안하여 저온 소결화를 하였다. 저손실인 Mg-Zn계 Ferrite에 Cu를 첨가하였다. MgO, ZnO, Fe$_2$O$_3$, CuO를 선택한 후 조성비의 변화를 두며 CuO를 MgO로 치환하였다. 이 시료를 98$0^{\circ}C$~135$0^{\circ}C$까지 3시간 소결하였다. 측정은 투자율, 전력손실 수축율, 코아로스를 측정하였다. 시료의 수축율을 개시하는 온도는 90$0^{\circ}C$ 부근이며 Cu치환에 따라 수축율이 증가하였으며, Cu치환에 따라 소성온도가 약 -5$0^{\circ}C$~75$^{\circ}C$ 낮아졌다.

Removal of Impurities from Waste Carbon Sludge for the Recycling (폐 카본슬러지의 재활용을 위한 不純物 분리 제거)

  • Impurities removal from waste carbon black was carried out to produce high-grade carbon black. A large amount of hydrophilic carbon black is produced as a byproduct of the hydrogen production process by flame decomposition of water. Due to its impurities content such as sulphur, iron, ash, etc., it can only be used as low-grade carbon or burnt out. High-grade hydrophilic carbon black is 3~5 times more expensive than oil-based carbon black because of high production cost associated with process complexly and pollutant treatment. Hydrophilic carbon is normally used for conductive materials for batteries, pigment for plastics, electric wire covering, additives for rubber, etc. In these applications, impurity content must be blow 1 fe. In this study, magnetic separation, froth flotation and ultrasonic treatment were employed to remove impurities from the low-grade hydrophilic carbon black. Results showed that the ash, iron and sulphur content of product decreased to less than 0.01 wt.%, 0.01 wt.% and 0.3 wt % respectively and the surface area of product was about 930 $m^2$/g for conductive materials.

Mineralization and Characterization of Boseung Kaolin in Gaya Area (가야 지역 보성 고령토의 광화작용 및 광물 특성)

  • In Gaya area, the Boseong kaolin deposits exhibit locally unusual occurrences such as downward enrichment of kaoin minerals, characteristic hydrothermal alterations (illite and stilbite), and phase relations among kaolin minerals in addition to the extensive weathering of anorthositic country rocks. This indicates that the kaolin deposits seem to be genetically formed as a mixed hydrothermal and residual model. The kaolin ores can be divided into five types on the basis of differences in occurrence, mineral composition and characters. These consist of two types of high-grade ores ranging above 80% in grade and low-grade ores as low as less than 80% including feldspar residuals or the peculiar impurity phase of illite-vermiculite-stilbite. Halloysite and kaolinite are mostly coexisted in the Boseong kaolin, and these kaolin minerals exhibit diverse appearances in crystallinity and morphology. Such a diversity in mineral phase and crystallinity seems to be originated from the complexity in genesis. In addition to these diverse characters of the kaolin, its applied-mineralogical characteristics such as chemical composition, thermal properties, whiteness, viscosity, and etc. made it disadvantageous in terms of ore quality.

The Efficiency of Fe Removal for Pyrophyllite by Ammonia Leaching Solution, and Their Dissolution Kinetics (암모니아 용출용액을 이용한 저 품위 엽납석으로부터 Fe 제거 효율과 용해 동역학)

  • In order to remove Fe impurity from low-grade pyrophyllite ore, the effect of certain variables such as particle size, concentration of sulfuric acid, amount of ammonium sulfate, added hydrogen peroxide, and temperature were studied. The euhedral cubic pyrites were observed in the low-grade pyrophyllite ore by reflected light microscopy, and quartz and dickite were identified in the sample by XRD analysis. The results of the Fe removal experiments showed that the best Fe removal parameters were when the particle size was at -325 mesh, the addition of $H_2SO_4$, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $H_2O_2$ was at a 2.0 M, 10.0 g/l, and 3.0 M concentration, respectively, and at a $70^{\circ}C$ leaching temperature. In the dissolution kinetics analysis, the dissolution of Fe from the pyrite surface was a controlled chemical reaction, and the Fe dissolution reaction was proportioned to 0.066/R, $[H_2SO_4]^{1.156}$, $[(NH_4)_2SO_4]^{0.745}$, $[H_2O_2]^{0.428}$.

An Experimental Study on the Fry Drying of Low-rank Coal with a High Moisture Content (유중 건조법에 의한 고수분 저품위탄 건조 실험)

  • The experimental characteristics for fry drying method was investigated using low-rank coal with a high moisture content. Final temperature, mixing ratio between coal and kerosene, content of coal or kerosene, total weight of the mixture and mixing methods were varied to find out the optimum conditions by measuring moisture of coal. Evaporation of the coal moisture was not completed below $120^{\circ}C$ of final temperature. The amount of moisture was not significantly different over $130^{\circ}C$. Coal moisture was easily evaporated by increasing coal content, which showed that the moisture evaporation could be significantly enhanced by the remove of evaporated moisture from kerosene rather than by heat transfer to the coal. High total weight of the mixture resulted in lowering moisture content of coal with long evaporation time. On the other hand, low total weight was difficult to reduce the moisture below a certain level, but could reduce evaporation time. Thus, it can concluded that kerosene content should be lowered to the extent maintaining the mobility of the mixture in order to enhance evaporation. It was also observed that evacuation and mixing by using nitrogen could improve drying of coal.

  • 세라믹의 완전 소결체는 높은 경도와 취성을 가지기 때문에 연삭과 같은 입자가공이 행해지게 되어, 가공능률이 매우 낮고, 복잡한 형상 창성이 어렵다. 완전소결된 세라믹의 절삭가공에서는, 공구수명이 짧고, 가공속도가 매우 늦어 일반의 부품가공에 적용하기 어렵다. 또한 소결이 전혀 행해지지 않은 성형체의 절삭가공은 공작물의 강도가 약하기 때문에 가공속도, 가공능률, 부품의 척킹 및 치수 정밀도 등에 문제가 있다고 할 수 있다 이러한 문제 때문에 엔지니어링 세라믹의 고능률, 고품위 절삭에 관한 연구가 필요하다.(중략)
