Occurrence and Variation of Oxygen Deficient Water Mass in the Namdae Stream Estuary, Yangyang, Korea (양양 남대천 하구의 빈산소 수괴 출현과 변동)

  • The occurrence and variation of oxygen deficient water mass (ODW) in Namdae stream estuary, Yangyang were studied. Field observations for water properties and sediment environments were conducted at 5 stations of the estuary from April 2008 to November 2008. The coastal sandbar is developed at the estuary mouth, and there is a pool between the estuary mouth and about 2.3 km upstream of the estuary. The pool is relatively deep and narrow compared to riverbed of the estuary. The ODW was observed continuously in the pool from May to October. The ODW extends vertically up to 2 m depth in August, and maximum length of the ODW were about 2.3 km. Mean concentration of ignition loss (IL) and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) of sediment was 7.5~9.0%, $0.282{\sim}1.106\;mg/g{\cdot}dry$ wt, respectively. Ammonium concentration in the bottom layer during formation period of the halocline and the ODW was 4~23 times higher than that of surface layer. ODW was initiated by the introduction of seawater into bottom of the estuary pool to make a strong halocline, and then decomposition of organic matter within sediment accelerated the formation of the ODW.

  • Behavior of trace metals in Masan Bay, Korea was studied in August 1998 when the oxygen deficient condition occurred. Dissolved Cd and Zn concentration in the surface waters decreased with increasing distance from Masan Harbor. Dissolved concentrations of Cd, Cu Pb and Zn in the surface waters were higher than bottom waters. Particulate(acid-teachable fraction) concentrations of Cu, Cd and Pb in the surface waters of Masan Bay decreased with increasing distance from Masan Harbor. Bottom waters contained higher concentrations of particulate Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn than surface waters. Distribution coefficients between dissolved and particulate phase (K/sub d/) of Cu and Cd decreased with the increasing distance from the Harbor, possibly due to reaction of these elements with sewage-derived particulate matter Al, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb in the surface sediment showed relatively high concentration in the inner Masan Bay.

Quaternary Diatom Assemblages from Sediment Core GC 98-06 in the Southern Drake Passage, Antarctica (드레이크 해협 남부 코어퇴적물에서 산출된 제 4기 규조 화석 연구)

  • A total of 64 species belonging to 23 genera of diatom fossils are identified from the Core GC 98-06 in the southern Drake Passage, Antarctica. The diatom assemblages are dominated by Actinocyclus actinochilus, Coscinodiscus asteromphalus, Eucampia antarctica, Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassiosira lentiginosa, T. ritscheri and T. anguste-lineata, which are about 73% of the assemblage. Open water species are more abundant than sea ice species in the diatom assemblages of the core. Fragilariopsis. kerguelensis and Thalassiosira lentiginosa are valuable indicators of the habitats. Especially, F. kerguelensis represent the influence of waters from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Sea ice taxa represents the influence of cold waters from Bransfield Strait Water and melt water from the sea-ice at during warm periods. The reworked diatoms such as Denticulopsis dimopha (Miocene) and D. hustedtii (Pliocene) are occurred with Quaternary species (Actinocyclus actinochilus, Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassiosira lentiginosa, and T. glacilis). The presence of reworked diatoms indicates the transportation of the older diatoms into the Drake passage from the circumference sediments, due to strong bottom current activity of Antarctic circumpolar deep water.

Numerical Modeling of Sediment Transport during the 2011 Summer Flood in the Youngsan River Estuary, Korea (영산강 하구의 2011년 하계 홍수시 퇴적물이동 수치모의)

  • The hydrodynamics in the Youngsan River Estuary has changed due to coastal developments such as the estuary dam and two tidal barriers. As the freshwater discharge is artificially controlled, the circulation pattern is different from those of natural estuaries and the river-born sediment supply is restricted. 3D numerical modeling system EFDC was applied to investigate the sediment transport pattern and budget in summer with river floods. The real-time driving forces and the fluvial sediment discharges from the watershed modeling were assigned for the simulation period. The size classes of sand, silt and clay were adopted based on the grain-size distribution of bottom sediments. The modeling results were calibrated and validated with the observed tides, tidal currents and suspended sediment concentrations. The suspended sediments are transported to the offshore at surface layer, whereas upstream toward the dam at mid- and bottom layers in August 2011. The characteristic estuarine circulation induced by the freshwater discharge from the dam, causes the deposition of silt-sized sediments on the whole and the sustained suspension of clay-sized sediments.

Meiobenthic community structure in the coastal area of Hallyeohaesang National Park (한려해상국립공원 해역에 서식하는 중형저서동물의 계절별 군집 변동 특성)

  • To assess the characteristics of meiofaunal community fluctuations related to environmental factors, seasonal surveys were conducted in the subtidal zone of Hallyeohaesang National Park. The average depth of the study area was about 20 m, and the average water temperature at the bottom was low in winter(11.33℃) and high in summer(17.95℃). The sedimentary particles mainly comprised silt and clay at most stations. The abundance of meiofauna ranged from 81.7 to 1,296.5 Inds. 10 cm-2, and the average abundance was 589.3 Inds. 10 cm-2. The average abundance of meiofauna in each season was the lowest at 416.5 Inds. 10cm-2 in winter and the highest at 704.5Inds.10 cm-2 in spring. The dominant taxa were nematodes (about 92%) and harpacticoids (about 5%). In the cluster analysis of meiofaunal communities, they were divided into four significant groups. The largest group mainly contained spring and summer samples, and contained stations with a high nematode density of over 500 Inds. 10 cm-2 and harpacticoids below 50 Inds. 10 cm-2 with a high composition ratio of nematodes. In the cluster analysis, no regional division was found between the stations, and it was thought to be divided by the seasons with high abundance according to seasonal variation and the composition ratio of nematodes and harpacticoids. In the Spearman rank correlation analysis, the density of total meiofauna and the most dominant taxa, nematodes, was not significantly related to environmental factors. However, the density of harpacticoids had a significant positive correlation with water depth and a negative correlation with sediment particle size.

A Study on the Exclusion Threshold Condition of the Riprap in the Bypass Pipe by 3D Numerical Simulation (3차원 수치모의를 통한 저층수 배사관 내 유입된 사석의 배제 한계조건에 대한 연구)

  • 큰 하상계수를 가지는 국내 중소하천의 특성상 농업용수 등의 수자원 이용을 위해 국내에는 약 10,000개 정도의 하천 횡단구조물이 설치되어 있다. 그러나 느려진 유속으로 인하여 횡단구조물 상류에 유사가 퇴적될 확률이 높아지며, 이러한 유사는 부착된 오염물에 의한 수질 및 하상오염, 좁아진 유수단면적에 의한 통수능 저하로 발생하는 홍수위 증가 등 많은 위험성을 내포하고 있다. 이에 대한 해결책 중의 하나로 저층수 배사관(bypass pipe)을 활용하여 쌓여진 유사를 하류로 흘려보내는 방법이 있다. 저층수 배사관은 횡단구조물 상류와 하류의 하상을 연결하는 관으로써 상류와 하류의 수두차에 의해 흐름 특성이 결정된다. 하지만 배사관 내 사석이 유입되어 배제되지 않는 경우 배사관의 효율이 현저하게 저하될 가능성이 있다. 본 연구에서는 FLOW-3D를 이용하여 배사관내 사석이 유입되었을 때, 어떠한 조건에서 배제되고 배제되지 않는지를 명확히 하고자 한다. 하상이 평탄한 수로$(13.0(L){\times}5.0(B){\times}1.0(H)m)$를 재현하였으며, 배출관의 직경은 10cm로 결정하였다. 사석의 종류는 4가지(3cm, 5cm, 7cm, 9cm)로써 이를 고려하여 격자크기를 0.5cm로 결정하였다. 이는 사석의 구형형상이 충분히 잘 재현될 수 있는 격자크기이다. 모의 수행은 하류의 수위를 변화시켜가며 수행하였다. 저층수 배사관 내 유동 특성이 상류와 하류의 수두차에 의해 결정되기 때문에, 모의의 효율성을 위해 상류의 수위는 일정한 값으로 진행하였다. 모의 결과 수위차가 클수록 배제가 잘되는 경향을 보였다. 입자의 크기와 상하류 수위차를 무차원화 한 변수를 결정하였다. 분석결과 이 변수가 일정 값을 넘어서는 경우 배제가 되며, 반대로 이 값을 넘어서지 못한 경우 배제가 되지 않음을 확인하였다. 향후 다양한 관의 형상에 대해서도 배사관 내 한계조건을 도출하여, 저층수 배사관의 설계 및 시공에 도움이 되고자 한다.

A Experimental Study on Exclusion Ability of Riprap into Bypass Pipe (저층수 배사관 내 유입된 사석 배출능력에 대한 연구)

  • There are various transversal structures (small dams or drop structures) in median and small streams in Korea. Most of them are concrete structures and it is so hard to exclude low-level water. Unless drainage valves and/or gates would not be installed near bottom of bed, sediment from upstream should be deposited and also contaminants attached to the sediments would devastatingly threaten the water quality and ecosystem. One of countermeasures for such problem is the bypass pipe installed underneath the transversal structure. However, there is still issued whether it would be workable if the gravels and/or stones would roll into and be not excluded. Therefore, in this study, the conditions to exclude the rip stone which enter into the bypass pipe was reviewed. Based on sediment transport phenomenon, the behavior of stones was investigated with the concepts from the critical shear stress of sediment and d'Alembert principle. As final results, the basis condition (${\tau}_c{^*}$) was derived using the Lagrangian description since the stones are in the moving state, not in the stationary state. From hydraulic experiments the relative velocity could be obtained. In order to minimize the scale effect, the extra wide channel of 5.0 m wide and 1.0 m high was constructed and the experimental stones were fully spherical ones. Experimental results showed that the ratio of flow velocity to spherical particle velocity was measured between 0.5 and 0.7, and this result was substituted into the suggested equation to identify the critical condition wether the stones were excluded. Regimes about the exclusion of stone in bypass pipe were divided into three types according to particle Reynolds number ($Re_p$) and dimensionless critical shear force (${\tau}_c{^*}$) - exclusion section, probabilistic exclusion section, no exclusion section. Results from this study would be useful and essential information for bypass pipe design in transveral structures.

Tidal Current and Suspended Sediment Transport in the Keum Estuary,West Coast of Korea (錦江 鹽河口에서의 潮流와 浮游堆積物 이동)

  • The circulation due to tidal current and river discharge, and the associated suspended suspended sediment transport in macrotidal Keum Estuary, were studied through a series of field measurements of tidal currents and suspended sediment concentration at three anchored stations from 1990 through 1992. From the measurements, the following results were obtained. At the seaward entrance of the estuary, the veritical profiles of the ebb and flood currents were almost symmetric. At the southern channel the flood current was dominant in the whole water column, but in the northern channel the ebb current was dominant in the surface and bottom layers and the flood current was dominant in the intermediate layer. The maximum velocity of the tidal current in the southern channel was 174 cm/s during flood tide in the intermediate layer. The maximum velocity, 148 cm/s in the northern channel also appeared during flood tide in the intermediate layer. However, in the surface and bottom layers, the maximum velocities were 110.6 cm/s during ebb tide and 92.1 cm/s during flood tide, respectively. The type of the Keum Estuary can be categorized to 'Type 3' of Hansen and Rattray's scheme. The water column of the estuary during the flood tide becomes stratified, and after high water the ebb current reduces the density difference and the water column becomes turbulent. The lower layer of the water column is generally turbulent. The largest sediment flux 20.61 ton/s was found in the southern channel during flood current in the lowest river discharge (May, 1991), while the smallest flux, 0.65 ton/s in the northern channel in the lowest tidal range (July, 1992). The stronger bottom shear velocity for the present study area seems to erode the bottom sediments during the flood tide, and the relatively long duration of the ebb tide to transport the suspended sediments. Under normal river discharge conditions, the suspended sediments are transported mainly through the southern channel. However, under high river discharge condition the suspended sediment transport is dominant through the northern channel.

Implications of Deep Nitrite in the Ulleung Basin (울릉 분지 저층수의 아질산염)

  • Presence of bottom water nitrite in the Ulleung Basin was remarkable because it is totally unexpected phenomenon at such an oxygen-rich environment. Yet no scientific explanation was set forward. Of several plausible explanations, following the Ockham's suggestion, a leaching of nitrite as an intermediate product of denitrification in the top sediment at the slope is most agreeable to given environmental settings. There seems no complementary process to make up the loss of N in the Ulleung Basin, which seems contribute to the characteristically low N:P ratio in the deep waters. If warming proceeds that weakens the thermohaline circulation, a current biological pump may stall and the phytoplankton assemblage might replaced drastically. If so this will pause an utmost challenge to the ecosystem of the East/Japan Sea. Still there remains a contradictory sedimentary signature that requests further explanation regarding the N (or organic C)-cycle such as extraordinarily high organic carbon content despite abundant oxidants in the overlying waters.

  • 세계각국 습지의 크기와 자연환경은 서로 다르지만 습지는 강과 관련이 되어있고, 여러 환경문제와 관련이 되어있다. 댐과 운하의 건설은 건기와 우기에 자연적인 홍수조절에 영향을 미치게 된다. 늪과 수질과 자연생태계는 정화되지 못한 가정하수와 강우 등에 영향을 받는다. 늪 주변의 산림벌채 및 습지저층 수로주위의 광범위한 퇴적지대가 형성된다. 습지유역의 경작으로 인하여 비료, 퇴비 등의 사용으로 습지의 부영양화를 가중시키게 된다. 습지의 부영양화와 오염된 퇴적물에 의한 수질악화는 전세계적인 문제로 대두되고 있다. 습지의 근본적인 문제는 무분별한 탐조활동, 환경오염으로 인한 동 식물의 감소 등으로 인한 생태계의 파괴이다. 그러므로, 가장 좋은 습지의 보전방법은 자연그대로 지속시키는 것이다.
