  • Hundreds of medicinal herbs have been using for the purpose of diseases treatment and immune enhancement for human being and other animals including fishes. Among them, 49 species of medicinal herbs were selected and tested for antibacterial activities against 19 strains of fish pathogenic bacteria in different 4 species. The 49 medicinal herbs were extracted by water and ethyl alcohol. The extracts were freeze dried and some paper discs from the extracts were prepared for the evaluation of antibacterial activity. The tested pathogenic bacteria were 5 strains of Edwardsiella tarda, 5 strains of Vibrio sp., 4 strains of Lactococcus garvieae, 1 strain of Lactococcus raffinose, 1 strain of Streptococcus parauberius, and 3 strains of Streptococcus iniae. The Galla rhois (Obaeja), Gaeonnamu and Hwangleyon showed antibacterial activities on both gram negative and gram positive fish pathogenic bacteria. The Youkgae, Sangbaekpi, Bogolji and Gamcho showed very effective antibacterial activities on gram positive pathogens while Jiyu, Aeyoeb and Yeonkyo showed very effective on gram negative pathogens.

  • In this study, we examined the antimicroboal effect against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Prevotella intermedia which were the bacteria causing the Periodontopathic by using 34 types of natural plant extracts. Therefore, this study measures growth inhibition activity and Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) of a sample extract with the use of organic solvent extracts in order to analyze the antibacterial effect of natural plant extracts on periodontopathic bacteria. Each of the 34 types of natural plant extracts were extracted by using the ethanol, and subsequently, the size of growth inhibition zone(clear zone, ㎜) of respective extracts were measured through the disk diffusion method. As a result, it was found that the growth inhibitory activity was found for A. actinomycetemcomitans, which is the bacteria causing the Periodontitis, in 13 types of natural plant extracts such as Raphanus sativus, Akebia quinata, Paeonia lactiflora, Belamcanda chinensis, Inula britannics, Houttuynia cordata, Forsythia saxatilis, Gentiana macrophylla, Melia azedarach, Scutellaria baicalensis, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, Kalopanax Pictus, etc. In the case of P. intermedia, the growth inhibitory activity was found in 13 types of natural plant extracts such as Raphanus sativus, Angelica acutiloba, Akebia quinata, Belamcanda chinensis, Inula britannics, Houttuynia cordata, Cinnamomum cassia, Aster tataricus, Melia azedarach, Scutellaria baicalensis, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, Kalopanax Pictus etc. For A. actinomycetemcomitans, anti-bacterial effect was exhibited in Belamcanda chinensis, Cinnamomum cassia, Kalopanax Pictus, Phellodendron amurense, Coptis chinensis. The Coptis chinensis showed the most excellent growth inhibitory activity in all organic solvent fragment, while P. intermedia showed the growth inhibitory activity in Belamcanda chinensis, Cinnamomum cassia, Meliaazedarach, Phellodendron amurense, and Coptis chinensis.

  • Inhibition of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) infection by 4 surfactants, sodium salts of alpha olefin (AOS), linear alkylbenzene (LAS), dioctyl sulfosuccinate (OSS), and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (SAS), was examined on tobacco cv. Xanthi-nc and NC 82. Infection of virions or TMV RNA was inhibited over 98% by the surfactants (2500 rpm). However, symptom development and viral concentration in tobacco plants treated with the surfactants into the rhizosphere soil 3 days before inoculation with TMV on leaves were not different from those in untreated tobacco plants. This indicates no significant systemic effects of the surfactants on the inhibition of TMV infection. The surfactants, except LAS, had no effect on the inhibition of viral infection when purified virions mixed with each surfactant and ultracentrifuged were inoculated on the tobacco plants. The virus was almost inactivated by LAS, showing that the viral infection was reduced more than 96%. The virus particles treated with the surfactants were not distinguishable in size and dimension from untreated normal particles, suggesting that the inhibitory action of the surfactants to TMV infection may not involve disintergration or uncoating of the virus at the early stage of infection.

  • The number of mountain species that live in the highlands and are isolated from other populations will likely decline because of global warming. The present study was conducted to survey populations of 10 relict butterfly species living in the highlands of Mt. Hallasan, Jeju Island. Butterfly surveys were conducted for 6 years from 2007 to 2012 by using the line transect method. To test whether relict species occur in the lowlands, we surveyed butterflies at 2 reference sites in the lowlands in 2012. All the 10 relict species were observed at the highland sites, whereas they were not observed at the 2 lowland sites. Majority of the relict species surveyed are relatively abundant, and the stability of their populations did not differ from that of other butterfly species. When we analyzed the annual change in populations, compared to other species the relict species did not show any difference in population change. Hence, the influence of climate change is not yet apparent on the populations of relict butterfly species. We evaluated the vulnerability of each relict species on the basis of our results and occurrence data from South Korea.
