  • While an ideal author graph should have its nodes to represent authors, automatically-generated author graphs mostly use author names as their nodes due to the difficulty of resolving author names into individuals. However, employing author names as nodes of author graphs merges namesakes, otherwise separate nodes in the author graph, into the same node, which may distort the characteristics of the author graph. This study proposes an algorithm which resolves author ambiguities based on co-authorship and then yields an author graph consisting of not author name nodes but author nodes. Scientific collaboration relationship this algorithm depends on tends to produce the clustering results which minimize the over-clustering error at the expense of the under-clustering error. In experiments, the algorithm is applied to the real citation records where Korean namesakes occur, and the results are discussed.

  • The author co-citation analysis is generally based on the frequency of the first author because most citation databases include only the first author in the bibliographic information. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to provide a better knowledge structure by utilizing the multiple authorship of author co-citation analysis. To achieve the purpose of this study, four different data sets are prepared: (1) counting the first author, (2) counting all the author without limiting the total frequency, (3) counting all the author with limiting the total frequency, and (4) counting adjusted frequencies based on the order of author subscription. The findings of this study show that there are clear differences between the knowledge structure counting all the author and the one counting only the first author. In addition, depending on the different methods, there are subtle changes of cluster members for authors.

  • An author of a paper is represented as his/her personal name in a bibliographic record. However, the use of names to indicate authors may deteriorate recall and precision of paper and/or author search, since the same name can be shared by many different individuals and a person can write his/her name in different forms. To solve this problem, it is required to disambiguate same-name author names into different persons. As features for author resolution, previous studies have exploited bibliographic attributes such as co-authors, titles, publication information, etc. This study attempts to apply email addresses of authors to disambiguate author names. For this, we first handle the extraction of email addresses from full-text papers, and then evaluate and analyze the effect of email addresses on author resolution using a large-scale test set.

  • Authorship is important for research integrity and publication ethics, acting as the basis for credit and academic achievement. Moreover, publication achievements have a significant impact on research grants and academic careers. Inappropriate authorship has been reported for several reasons, including complex interests and competitive environments. One form of this is representative authorship misuse, which includes honorary and ghost authorships. Kin co-authorship, such as parent-children authorship, is another form of inappropriate authorship that has recently emerged as a social problem in Korea. To address these issues, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) has established criteria for authorship. Similarly, many journals use the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) and Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) systems to prevent authorship misuse and systematically evaluate author credit and responsibility. Herein, this article reviews authorship and inappropriate authorship, as well as introduces methods to avoid authorship misuse.

  • Author co-citation analysis with 20 authors from Korean Nutrition Literature were executed. The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of bibliographic phenomena in Korean literature by co-citation and to approach the intellectural structure of nutrition field in view of multidimensional space. The analysis assumes that the more two author are cited together, the closer the relationship between them. The raw data are co-citation counts from the Korean Journal of Nutrition over the period 1986~1987. The resulting map shows (1) identifiable author groups of nutrition, (2) locations of these groups with respect to each other, (3) the degree of centrality and peripherality of author within groups, (4) the relationship between domestic authors and foreign authors.

  • This study examines the social network of scholars in the field of communication by using author cocitation data. A matrix containing the number of cocited documents between pairs of authors is created for social network analysis of scholars who are on the editorial board of Journal of Communication, and the networked map of the scholars is used to visualize the knowledge structure of the field by identifying groups of authors who are more central than others. In addition, the study compares the previous analysis performed in 2008 and the current analysis on the editorial board of the journal, which increased from 146 to 254 scholars in numbers. Author cocitation data was collected using Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) through the Web of Science database, and UCInet was used to create and visualize the author cocitation network and to analyze the correlation between the cocitation network and the factors that may have affected the structure of the cocitation network.

  • To overcome article-oriented search functions and provide author-oriented ones, a namesake problem for author names should be solved. Author disambiguation, proposed as its solution, assigns identifiers of real individuals to author name entities. Although recent state-of-the-art approaches to author disambiguation have reported above 90% performance, there are few academic information services which adopt author-resolving functions. This paper describes a large-scale test set for author disambiguation which was created by KISTI to foster author resolution researches. The result of these researches can be applied to academic information systems and make better service. The test set was constructed from DBLP data through web searches and manual inspection, Currently it consists of 881 author names, 41,673 author name entities, and 6,921 person identifiers.

  • In bibliographic data, the use of personal names to indicate authors makes it difficult to specify a particular author since there are numerous authors whose personal names are the same. Resolving same-name author instances into different individuals is called author resolution, which consists of two steps: calculating author similarities and then clustering same-name author instances into different person groups. Author similarities are computed from similarities of author-related bibliographic features such as coauthors, titles of papers, publication information, using supervised or unsupervised methods. Supervised approaches employ machine learning techniques to automatically learn the author similarity function from author-resolved training samples. So far however, a few machine learning methods have been investigated for author resolution. This paper provides a comparative evaluation of a variety of recent high-performing machine learning techniques on author disambiguation, and compares several methods of processing author disambiguation features such as coauthors and titles of papers.

  • This study analyzed the authorship tendency of the authors in the specific organizations. The SCI articles of the authors in H medical center, from 2000 to 2008, were extracted and indexed by the authors. The authorship tendency was analyzed on transience and continuance. As results of analysis, authorship tendency showed continuing tendency not transient tendency. Specifically, the publication rate by new authors was high as the average 39.17% but the publication rate by pre-existence authors, which consisted of the publication rate(16.83%) of reclosing authors and publication rate (44%) of the series author, was relatively higher as the average 60.83%. Also, the extinction author rate of new authors was relatively low as the average 28.2%. the non-flexible publication probability by the author in the specific year was very high as the average 76%. As a result, this study would be used as basic data for the research result management of the organization.
