The selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia was carried out in the presence of natural manganese ore (NMO) and manganese as catalysts using a homemade 1/4" reactor at $10,000hr^{-1}$ of space velocity. The inlet ammonia concentration was maintained at 2,000 ppm, with an air balance. The manganese catalyst resulted in a substantial ammonia conversion, with adsorption activation energies of oxygen and ammonia of 10.5 and 22.7 kcal/mol, respectively. Both $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$, defined as the temperatures where 50% and 90% of ammonia, respectively, are converted, decreased significantly when alumina-supported manganese catalyst was applied. Increasing the manganese weight percent by 15 wt% increased the lower temperature activity, but 20 wt% of manganese had an adverse effect on the reaction results. An important finding of the study was that the manganese catalyst benefits from a strong sulfur tolerance in the conversion of ammonia to nitrogen.

Vapor adsorption of hydrocarbon has been studied for stabilization after drying low-rank coal. The surface characteristics and the propensity of spontaneous combustion were observed for stabilized coal which was maintained with hydrocarbons as stabilizer at several conditions of residence time and temperature. Surface area of micropores in coal mainly decreased after vapor adsorption. As residence time and temperature of adsorption process increased, the propensity of spontaneous combustion decreased. The type of hydrocarbons did not effect on the propensity of spontaneous combustion. As the analysis results of this work, the amount of hydrocarbon adsorbates required to stabilize dried coal was 0.5 wt% or less of coal, and the stabilizing effect was induced by adsorption of low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons.
Some supported gold catalysts were prepared by impregnation and coprecipitation methods. Effect of gold addition and active sloe formation were studied by investigating particle sizes of gold, amounts of oxygen adsorbed, adsorption properties of CO and NO, and reduction and oxidation properties, etc.. The gold particles of the catalyst by impregnation were irregular and very large as 30~100 nm, but those by coprecipitation were uniform and ultra-fine as about 4 nm. On $Au/Al_2O_3$ catalyst, the addition of gold to inactive $Al_2O_3$ caused the decomposition of $N_2O$, and CO was not irreversibly adsorbed while $O_2$ was atomically and irreversibly adsorbed. The adsorption sites of oxygen were attributed to the active sites which were restricted to the circumference of hemispherical gold particle-support interface rather than all atoms on the surface of gold particle. Also, CO was reversibly and irreversibly adsorbed on $Al_2O_3$ at low temperature, and the addition of gold weakened both reversible and irreversible adsorptions. The affinity for CO on $Au/Co_3O_4$ catalyst decreased conspicuously compared to $Co_3O_4$. The effect of gold addition did not appear in reduction step but did remarkably in reoxidation step; the added gold promoted the reoxidation of the reduced cobalt atoms.
Microstructures and the gas-sensing characteristics of the $\textrm{SnO}_2$ thin films were studied, which were deposited at various conditions (rf power, sample temperature, $\textrm{O}_2$/Ar ratio) by the rf magnetron sputtering. As a result, six typical microstructures were derived, such as amorphous(A), amorphous mixed with polycrystalline grains (A+P), polycrystalline with random crystalographic orientation (P), fine columnar (FC), coarse columnar (CC) and Zone T (T) with dense fiberous structure. Typically, A, A+ P, and P structures were formed when no $\textrm{O}_2$ was added to the sputter gas, whereas FC, CC, and T structures were obtained when $\textrm{O}_2$ was added. The A structure formed at low rf power and low temperature, the A+P at high rf power and low temperature, and the P at high rf power and high temperature. The FC structure was obtained at low rf power and low temperature. the CC at low rf power and high temperature, and the T at high rf power and low temperature. Results of the gas-sensing test of the sensor chips fabricated from the typical films indicated that the fine columnar microstructure shows the highest sensitivity both at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. It was proposed that this is due to the high specific surface area of the micro-columns.
In this study, NMO (Natural Manganese Ore), $MnO_2$, and $Mn_2O_3$ catalysts were used in the selective catalytic reduction process to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) using $NH_3$ as a reducing agent at low temperatures in the presence of oxygen. In the case of the NMO (Natural Manganese Ore), it was confirmed that the conversion of nitrogen oxides in the stability test did not change even after 100 hours at 423 K. The Kinetics experiments were carried out within the range where heat and mass transfer were not factors. From a steady-state Kinetics study, it was found that the low-temperature SCR reaction was zero order with the respect to $NH_3$ and 0.41 ~ 0.57 order with the respect to NO and 0.13 ~ 0.26 order with the respect to $O_2$. As temperature increases, the reaction order decreases as a result of $NH_3$ and oxygen concentration. It was confirmed that the reaction between the $NH_3$ dissociated and adsorbedon the catalyst surface and the gaseous nitrogen monoxide (E-R model) and the reaction with the adsorbed nitrogen monoxide (L-H model) occur.
The effect of moisture in flue gas on SCR reaction of NMO (Natural Manganese Ore) was studied. The experiments were performed over NMO with NO, $NH_3$ at independent condition or simultaneous condition. $NH_3$ can be oxidized at low temperature by the lattice oxygen in NMO catalyst. The concentration of NO and $NO_2$ by $NH_3$ oxidation with moisture is higher above $300^{\circ}C$ than that without moisture. Moisture would competitively adsorb with NO and $NH_3$ on NMO catalyst. It caused poor NOx conversion to compete against $H_2O$. Besides the NOx conversion efficiency was reduced at below $250^{\circ}C$ because of the dipped $H_2O$ competitively adsorbed $NH_3$. The reactivity of NMO varied with the calcination temperature and the optimum calcination temperature was $400^{\circ}C$ regardless $H_2O$.

An exothermic oil absorbent sheet with calcium chloride crystals can be fabricated, by dipping a clean polypropylene fabric in calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid solution and drying it. The exothermic oil absorbent sheet applied to the seawater surface, releases heat by the dissociation of calcium chloride. The dissociation heat liquefies the solidified low-sulfur fuel oil at a low temperature, and converts it to a state at which it can be absorbed. The optimum mole concentrations of calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid required for the exothermic oil absorbent sheet, are 0.25 M and 0.5 M, respectively. The oil absorption capacity of the exothermic oil absorbent sheet for low sulfur fuel oil depends on the seawater temperature. But, it is highly excellent at 4.5-7.08 g/g at 10℃, the average seawater temperature during the winter in Korea. The exothermic oil absorbent sheet is an excellent alternative in absorbing low-sulfur fuel oil in winter and removing it from seawater.
Effects of the support and amount of NiCl2 on ammonia adsorption capacity were investigated to improve the ammonia adsorption performance. NiCl2 was impregnated onto the surface of various supports under ultrasonic irradiation. The physicochemical properties and ammonia adsorption performance of NiCl2-impregnated adsorbents were investigated. Among the various supports, it was found that the adsorption capacity of ammonia was the best when NiCl2 was impregnated on activated carbon (AC) with the highest specific surface area. As a result of changing the amount of NiCl2 impregnated on AC, the NiCl2(2.0)/AC adsorbent impregnated with 2 mmol·g-1 of NiCl2 showed the highest ammonia adsorption capacity of 5.977 mmol·g-1. In addition, the adsorption capacity was found to be maintained at an almost constant level in five repeated cycle tests under the condition that low-temperature heat could be utilized. This indicates that the adsorbent has excellent regeneration ability.
