  • Many researches on green ship with increasing on economics, efficiency and convenience have been carried out consistently. One of them is development of diesel engines with electronic control. While small duty one for automobiles had been adopted mainly already, disseminating heavy duty one for ships has trouble due to safety and reliability. In order to solve these problem in this study, performance of electronic control and cam type engine installed in parallel on training ship HANBADA of korea maritime university was analyzed and compared. It is certain that specific fuel oil consumption of the electronic control type is lower than cam type and excellent at lower engine load, especially. And the electronic control type shows more effective characteristic at sea trial on specific fuel oil consumption.

  • Recent accidents of crude oil tankers have resulted in sinking, grounding of vessels and significant levels of marine pollution. Therefore, International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been strengthening the regulations of ship maneuvering performance in MSC 137. The evaluation of maneuvering performance can be made at the early design stage; it can be investigated numerically or experimentally. The main objective of this paper was to investigate the maneuvering performance of a VLCC due to the increase of rudder force at an early design stage for low speed in shallow water conditions. It was simulated in various operating condition such as deep sea, shallow water, design speed and low speed by using the numerical maneuvering simulation model, developed using MMG maneuvering motion equation and KVLCC 2 (SIMMAN 2008 workshop). The effect of increasing the rudder force can be evaluated by using numerical simulation of turning test and ZIG-ZAG test. The research showed that, increasing the rudder force of a VLCC was more effective on improving the turning ability than improving the course changing ability especially. The improvement of turning ability by the rudder force increasing is most effective when the ship is sailing in shallow water at low forward speed.

  • The marine accident is being highlighted as a serious worldwide problem for the guard station of human safety and the protection of marine environment pollution. Especially, the GMDSS is operated as a international rule for the safety of a large scale ship, but the small size ship's management is required a adaptive national rule because of the complex condition of national circumstance. This study is motivated to develop a ship's position tracking system combined with GPS information for VTS and control the ship navigation, velocity and longitude etc.. In Part of Navigation Data Transmission is GPS data transmission whih ship's ID using microprocessor and TX speed translation for flexibility with 4800∼2400 [bps]. Results show that the our system for data transmission using microprocessor is useful tool in maritime transmission as SSB used the main TX method of small ship and has a cost competitive power. Therefore, we will expected cost and technical competitive power compared to AIS. But those systems are still remained the unsolved problem for protection from marine accident.. Finally, we examined the semi-actual receiving state on simulated sailing in the around sea of Mok-Po harbor.

  • Recently. the excessive diesel engine torsional excitation of typical energy saving ships has resulted in severe damages of the propeller shaft. Up to now the design and torsional vibration analysis of the marine diesel shafting system has been performed on the assumption that excitations are deterministic. But a diesel engine excitation varies randomly from cylinder to cylinder and from cycle to cycle, due to the imperfect operation of the engine components due to engine misfiring. consequently, a more rational analysis method for the propulsion shafting torsional vibration is required. In this paper probabilistic analysis method of the marine diesel engine shafting system under torsional vibration is presented. First a response surface representing maximum shear stresses in a shafting system is built. Then Monte Carlo simulation with subsequent approximation of the results by one of Pearson's curves, is performed. Some numerical results based on the proposed method are compared with t도 some numerical data available. They show acceptable agreements with the data.

  • In this paper, the effect of mass injection on the control of tip vortex cavitation was studied experimentally. A mass injection system for a 3D hydrofoil was designed to control the location of injection as well as the injection rate. A series of cavitation tests were carried out in a cavitation tunnel for different injection locations and rates. The cavitation behaviour was observed using a high-speed camera and the corresponding noise was measured using a hydrophone installed in the observation window. The results showed that the tip vortex cavitation was suppressed under certain conditions and the noise was reduced in some frequency bands. It was also found that there is a location where the effect of mass injection could be maximized and hence the noise reduction.

  • It includes the considerable concentration and dangerousness as the peculiar work of a pilot and dock-master to berthing/deberthing the big object as for the ship within the port or the ship yard. A tug utilization is getting increased in this berthing/deberthing work and the own ship is affected a lot by external force due to moving with low advance speed. In this study, we constructed the 2 dimension virtual system which can conduct the berthing/deberthing manoeuvring work by using mainly tugs in a external force, particularly strong wind. Also, propose objective standard that could estimate the degree of manoeuvring difficulty, and conducted simulation experiment for this. we analyzed correlations between the subjective estimation which is described numerically the decreased dangerousness and the objective index which is related to the main parameter regarding manoeuvring by using this simulator from the result of conducting simulation experiment. And then we discussed the estimation technique of manoeuvring difficulty.

  • The INS(Inertial Navigation System) provides high rate position, velocity and attitude data with good short-term stability while the GPS(Global Position System) provides position and velocity data with long-term stability. By integrating the INS with GPS, a navigation system can be achieved to Provide highly accurate navigation Performance. For the best performance, time synchronization of GPS and INS data is very important in GPS/INS integrated system But, it is impossible to synchronize them exactly due to the communication and computation time-delay. In this paper, to reduce the error caused by the measurement time-delay in GPS/INS integrated systems, error compensation methods using separate bias Kalman filter are suggested for both the loosely-coupled and the tightly-coupled GPS/INS integration systems. Linearized error models for the position and velocity matching GPS/INS integrated systems are Int derived by linearizing with respect to its time-delay and augmenting the delay-state into the conventional state equations for each case. And then separate bias Kalman Inter is introduced to estimate the time-delay during only initial navigation stage. The simulation results show that the present method is effective enough resulting in considerably less position error.

  • The berthing/deberthing manoeuvring operation is the peculiar work owned to the marine pilot and the dock master. So, in the port or the shipyard, the berthing/deberthing manoeuvring operation requires considerable concentration and bears dangerousness. In that situation, a tug utilization is getting increased and the external forces have an effect on the own ship because of moving with low advance speed. In this study, we constructed the 2-dimensional virtual ship manoeuvring simulator system with which we can carry out the berthing/deberthing manoeuvring operation by using tugs in the external forces such as strong wind. And then, we propose the objective indexes by which the degree of manoeuvring difficulty evaluated. Using the present system, we carry out manoeuvring simulation experiment in order to grasp correlation between the objective indexes proposed here and the def{ree of manoeuvring difficulty felt by operator. Lastly, we discuss the evaluation technique of manoeuvring difficulty.

  • Loss of Control in Flight(LOC-I) due to aircraft upset attitude has the highest air accident rate, and International Aviation Institute such as ICAO and FAA recommended flight crew to operate aircraft safely through UPRT(Upset Prevention & Recovery Training) program. ICAO has selected Loss of Control(LOC) as key safety indicator, and recommended to respond using TEM(Threat and Error Management). However there are not much specific treats and errors classified for UPRT programs using real TEM based on evidences. This study intends to consider the importance of UPRT through the introduction of UPRT and accident analysis using TEM. Typical upset accidents were classified to common threats as IFR, inadequate training, Automation surprise, and inexperienced copilots. The common errors were cross-check, speed and altitude deviation, callouts, communication, thrust and stall action fail. The undesired aircraft states were inadequate automation mode, Deviation of speed and vertical, stall, and crash. These suggest areas to improve UPRT.

  • Recently, the growth in the propulsion power and propeller size of typical energy saving ships has resulted in severe damages of the oil-lubricated stern tube bearing. Consequently, a more rational analytical method for the design of the shafting system is required. In this paper an analytical method applicable to the design of the oil-lubricated stern tube bearing and shafting system is presented. The method consists of the finite element analysis of the shafting system and the oil film hydrodynamics. The shafting system is modeled as a three-dimensional problem using beam elements taking account for the steady components of thrust, lateral forces and moments of the propeller as well as the elastic foundation effects. The oil film hydrodynamics is modeled as a two-dimensional problem. Equal and retangular elements employing hourglass control method are used for the construction of the oil film fluidity matrix. To search the quasi-static equilibrium position between the propeller shaft and the oil film, an optimization technique is employed. Some numerical results based on the proposed method are compared with some measured and numerical data available. They show acceptable agreements with the data.
