  • Libraries are encountering hostile conditions around journal licensing such as limited budget, the high price of packages, and vendor-led negotiation. They need to collect and analyze usage data of electronic journals to develop electronic journal collection appropriate for their own circumstances. The purpose of this study is to suggest an practical guideline for librarians' analysis of electronic journal usage statistics. For this, the study reviewed related previous studies and examined current state on usage statistics provided from COUNTER release 3 compliant vendors. Finally this study proposed five core statistics including full-text article request per journal, journal using rate, price per full-text article request, most use group, and low use group, and further discussed how to use them effectively for the electronic journal management.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the effectiveness of the e-journal process in libraries and information organizations by identifying the relative priority of each criterion in the e-journal consortium. To identify criteria in the process, this study employed a content analysis of previous studies on e-journal and consortium. A total of 73 criteria were found, and these were classified into three categories and 21 sub-categories. Then, the relative weight of each criterion was calculated using an AHP technique. This technique is one of useful tools for collecting experts' opinions. The AHP findings indicated that the cost of the e-journal was the most important criterion in the e-journal consortium. This is followed in priority by users' needs, usage statistics, and others. Using these findings, librarians and information professionals might be able to identify priorities in the e-journal work process, and to improve the effectiveness of the process.

  • This paper aims to propose the most appropriate method for calculating the journal PageRank in a domestic citation database. Korean journals show relatively high journal self-citation ratios and have many outgoing citations to external journals which are not included in the domestic citation database. Because the PageRank algorithm requires recursive calculation to converge, those two characteristics of domestic citation databases must be accounted for in order to measure the citation impact of Korean journals. Therefore, two PageRank calculation methods and four formulas for self-citation adjustment have been examined and tested for KSCD journals. The results of the correlation analysis and regression analysis show that the SCImago Journal Rank formula with the cr2 type self-citation adjustment method seems to be a more appropriate way to measure the relative impact of domestic journals in the Korean Science Citation Database.

  • This study assesses user attitudes towards electronic academic journals and suggests management issues for users and information managers. To reveal academic scholars' user attitudes, this paper is an attempt to survey the concepts of electronic journals, thoughts, perceptions and experiences of a sample of university faculty. Based upon various aspects of user attitudes, this study derives effective management techniques for electronic academic journals in library and information center.

  • The importance of data publishing in the open-science era is increasing as it can contribute to other scientific discoveries by accelerating the sharing of research data, improving accessibility and citability, and providing standardized technical documentation for research data. In addition, the need for data papers is emerging as a way for data papers to maintain a status equivalent to research papers, and the publication of data journals is on the rise as a new type of scholarly publishing. In particular, the field of Ecology is a field where large-scale research data are produced and managed, thus the data journal publishing in this field is active worldwide. On the other hand, the research on data journal is in its early stages in Korea, and there is no data journal in the field of Ecology. Thus, this study explores and presents strategies for publishing data journals in the ecological field. First, we investigate the publishing status of domestic and international data journals and the publication status of domestic journals. Then, we conducted a focused group interview with experts of scholarly publishing, open access policy and journal publishing in the field of Ecology. Finally, based on the survey and the expert FGI's results, strategies are suggested in terms of publishing data journals in the field of ecology, organizing and publishing journals, organizing journal editors, and receiving manuscripts.

  • The proliferating use of e-journals has led increasing interest in collecting and analyzing usage statistic information. However, the existing manual method and simple journal usage reports provided by publishers hinder the effective collection of large-scale usage statistics and the comprehensive/in-depth analysis on them. Thus we have proposed a hybrid automatic method of collecting e-journal usage statistics based on screen scraping and SUSHI protocol. In addition, the generation method of summary statistics presented in graphs, charts and tables has been suggested in this study. By utilizing the suggested system and analysis data, librarians can compose various reports on budget or operation of the libraries.

  • Academic research libraries are seeking a long-term preservation plan for journals for cost-effective stewardship. The emergence of shared print archives has given the library community the opportunity to resolve the problem of the lack of library storage and build a collaborative long-term archiving plan for the print journals. The purpose of this study is to examine Western Regional Storage Trust(WEST), the largest print journal archiving program in North America, and identify their strategies for building a distributed, retrospective print repository service for journals. Based on the analysis, this article will discuss the development of new trends of collaborative library management in a digital age.
