  • Seismic hazard assessments are performed on a variety of infrastructure projects. One component of a seismic hazard assessment is the attenuation relationship. Several attenuation relationships have been developed over the decades to predict peak ground acceleration under a variety of site conditions. For example, many attenuation relationships were designed to estimate peak ground acceleration, as well as other intensity measures, under a variety of soil conditions, mostly using the average shear wave velocity for the upper 30 m of earth material as a classification scheme. However, certain types of infrastructure, such as tunnels and nuclear power plants, are typically founded on and in bedrock. Using data from Japan, we developed a simple correlation to estimate peak ground acceleration for rock sites and compare the results from another popular attenuation relationship. Results indicate the popular attenuation relationship to be less than the proposed model for distances less than 200 km.

  • Several major agronomic traits of 4 isogenic lines for tillering(Kindred, Morex)were investigated under the different seeding rates and seedling mortality grown in the pots. The normal-tillering phenotypes had higher grain yield(46%) and leaf area index(56%) than their uniculm isogenic counterparts. The assortment rate(69%) and 1,000 grain weight(27%) in uniculm type were greater than the normal type. Uniculm plants were earlier in heading(4∼8days) and maturing(2∼3 days) dates compared with their counterparts. The grain yield was fitted to linear regression, ranged 0.659g to 0.5g per spike number. On increasing the seedling mortality rates, the grains per spike and 1,000 grain weight were slightly decreased, but the grain yield per plot was decreased markedly because of decrease of spikes per plot. The assortment rate, leaf photosynthetic capacity and reproductive tiller number were increased with increase of seedling mortality. The grain yield was largely dependent on the number of spikes per plot on occurrence of seedling mortality. For the uniculm genotypes to be introduced and bred into a present leading variety, the isogenic lines were precisely tested in the open field for a couple of years.

  • The complicated facilities on the ground have begun to be laid under the ground as increasing emphasis on the beauty of cities due to centralization. But, as the kind of the facilities have been concentrated on the narrow area, accidents occur due to the difficulty of maintenance and the inaccuracy of location information. In this study, first we constructed the field test model to compare with the method of underground probing. So, we could know that the electromagnetic induction method and GPR(Ground Penetration Radar) are useful. It was acquired the position information for the underground facilities using a RTK-GPS. As the result, we have analyzed the accurate position of the underground facility and show the way improving accuracy in detecting and surveying comparing with the traditional surveying method. Also, we hope to contribute the effective maintenance and prevention of disasters to the underground facility as using underground facilities 3D position with Arcview and building the DB of exact depth and underground facilities information system.

  • The accident risk at the construction workplace associated with agricultural engineering is comparatively higher than those of other fields due mainly to its complex work types and processes. Agricultural engineering deals with a variety of agricultural infrastructures from irrigation and drainage facilities to giant-scale coastal reclamation land infrastructures. The characteristics that most agricultural projects have conducted on a small-scale even worsen the situation drawing low attentions to risk management. Therefore, systematical risk assessment that focuses on details of agricultural construction work process is required in order to enhance safety management capacity and to prevent repetitive accidents ultimately. This study aims to categorize construction work types and processes of agricultural construction works, and to quantitatively assess the accident risk of them based on accident analysis. Regarding classification of construction works, actual 827 accident cases were thoroughly reviewed and coded by their construction site, facility and work type, project scale and so on. Most accidents (71.8 % of total cases) occurred in small-scale construction workplaces with less than 5 billion Korean won project budget. And those accidents related to agricultural infrastructure project (37.4%) and agricultural water development project (22.4%). In terms of work types, accidents frequently took place in form-work followed by pipe installation work, steel bar work and concrete work. The potential risks were compared with actual outbreak of accidents based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results show that the potential conditions of accident expected to be took place is somewhat different from the actual conditions where accidents actually happened. This implicates that risk management manuals or education needs to be adjusted by reflecting unexpected circumstances. Overall, this study is meaningful in that the results could be foundations as to strengthen risk management capacity for agricultural engineering projects.

  • In general, entire supply air of the BSL3 laboratory should be vented to the outside for its biosafety and the air conditioning system should always be operating to maintain a room pressure difference. In this regard, annual energy consumption is approximately five or ten times greater than the magnitude of the office building. In addition, to adjust room pressure difference to the set value efficiently, the supply and exhaust duct system are installed in each room of the BSL3 lab. Thus, initial construction cost is extremely high. In this study, multizone simulation is performed to estimate maintaining the appropriate room pressure difference in the case of changing model A (each room supply and exhaust system) to model B (each zone supply and exhaust system) for verification of the BSL3 lab biosafety. Also, in the case of these two models, the multizone simulation for three kinds of biohazard scenario is performed as part of risk assessment. The analysis of initial construction cost of two models is conducted for comparison. According to the studies, initial construction cost of model B is less than about 22% of existing model A. Moreover, biosafety of the BSL3 lab is still maintaining in the case of the two models.

  • There are many risk factors of electrical shock caused by a minimum of protective devices, loose working environments, deterioration of installations at temporary power installations of construction sites. An insulation cover for instrument transformer(MOF) used in 22.9[kV] class power receiving system hasn't shown good performance in terms of electrical safety because of short clearance between insulation cover and each input and output wire junction part. The insulation cover is easily moved by outside environment as wind or rain because of different size between insulation cover and busing, also can be leaded to breakdown by tracking. Therefore, we have proposed the insulation cover which effectively can prevent from electrical disaster in this paper, and a utility model patent had been registered already. To decrease the electric field concentrated on specific part, we had roundly designed the shape of insulation cover and the clearance between cover and live part was adjusted to be longer than the existing thing. The proposed insulation cover was evaluated by using the electric field solution program.

  • Due to a high portion of mountainous terrains in Korea, debris flow and its disasters have been increased. In addition, recently localized flash-floods caused by climate change should add frequencies and potential risks. Grasping and understanding the behaviors of debris flow would allow us to prevent the consequent disasters caused by its occurrence. In this study, we developed a number of cases by changing the bottom slopes and their curvatures and investigated their effects on potential damage caused by the debris flow using FLO-2D. As simulating each bed slopes we analyzed for velocity, depth, impact, reach distance, and reach shape. As a result the lower the average slope, the greater the influence of its curvature and the numerical results were analyzed with showed a well-marked difference in impact stress and flow velocity. The result from this study could be referred for protecting from the debris flows when design countermeasure structures in mountainous regions.

  • The increased frequency of meteorological disasters has been observed due to increased extreme events such as heavy rainfalls and flash floods. Numerous studies using high-resolution weather radar rainfall data have been carried out on the hydrological effects. In this study, a conditional merging technique is employed, which makes use of geostatistical methods to extract the optimal information from the observed data. In this context, three different techniques such as kriging, inverse distance weighting and spline interpolation methods are applied to conditionally merge radar and ground rainfall data. The results show that the estimated rainfall not only reproduce the spatial pattern of sub-hourly rainfall with a relatively small error, but also provide reliable temporal estimates of radar rainfall. The proposed modeling framework provides feasibility of using conditionally merged rainfall estimation at high spatio-temporal resolution in ungauged areas.

  • As SAR data have the strong point that is not influenced by weather or light amount in comparison with optical sensor data, they are highly useful for temporary analysis and can be collected in time of unforeseen circumstances like disaster. This study is to extract DEM from L-band data of JERS-1 SAR imagery using InSAR and DInSAR processing techniques. As a result of analyzing the extracted coherence and interferogram images, it was shown that the DInSAR 3-pass method produces more suitable coherence values than the InSAR method. The accuracies of DEM extracted from the SAR data were evaluated by employing the DEM derived from the digital topographic maps of 1:5000 scale as reference data. And it was ascertained that baselines between antenna locations largely affect the accuracy of extracted DEM.
