  • Physical activity can improve sensorimotor recovery after peripheral nerve injury. Growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43) is highly correlated with neuronal development and axonal regeneration and present in large quantities in the axonal growth cone. Using immunofluorescene staining and anterograde and retorgrade techniques, we identified enhanced axonal regrowth in distal stump of the sciatic nerve 3-14 days after crush injury in rats with treadmill training. We also carried out western blot to investigate GAP-43 protein expression in injured sciatic nerve. GAP-43 protein levels were highly induced in the injured sciatic nerve 3, 7 and 14 days compared with sedentary group. Thus, the present data provide a new evidence that treadmill training promoted axonal re-growth after injury and increased GAP-43 protein levels in the regenerating nerve.

  • In order to produce L-lysine from cellulosic substrates by the intergeneric protoplast fusion between cellulolytic bacteria, Cellulomonas flavigena KFCC31221 and amino acid producing bacteria, Brevibacterium flavum ATCC14067, Corynebacteriurn glutamicum ATCC13032, conditions for protoplast formation and regeneration of these strains were investigated. After the strains were mutated with 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ N-methyl-N'-nitro N-nitrosoguanidine for 30 min and the mutants were enriched by treating 300$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ penicillin-G for 2 hrs, B. flavum Hse- Str$^{r}$ , C. glutamicum Met$^{-}$Thr$^{-}$ Rif$^{r}$ and Cellulomonas flavigena Thr$^{-}$Val$^{-}$Kan$^{r}$ were isolated. The rate of protoplast formation ranged from 95 to 98% when strains were treated at the concentration of 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ of lysozyme, pH 6.5, 33$^{\circ}C$, for 6 hrs. in Tris- malate buffer supplemented with 0.4M sucrose as osmotic stabilizer. Approximately 30-33% protoplast was regenerated on the regeneration complete medium(RCM) containing 1.5% agar and 0.5M sodium succinate overlaid with the same medium except 0.7% agar.

  • Biodegradable polymers have been used extensively as scaffolding materials to regenerate new tissues and the ingrowth of tissue have been reported to be dependent directly of the porosity, pore diameter, pore shape, and porous structure of the scaffold. In this study, porous poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) scaffolds with five different pore sizes were fabricated to investigate the effect of pore sizes for AF tissue regeneration. Cellular viability and proliferation were assayed by MTT test. Hydroxyproline/DNA content of AF cells on each scaffold was measured. sGAG analyses were performed at each time point of 2 and 6 weeks. Scaffold seeded AF cells were implanted into the back of athymic nude mouse to observe the difference of formation of disc-like tissue depending on pore size in vivo. We confirmed that scaffold with $180{\sim}250{\mu}m$ pores displayed high cell viability in vitro and produced higher ECM than scaffold with other pore sizes in vivo.

  • Recently, sea algae cultivation as carbon sink and carbon dioxide fixation have been considered. Also, various researches on bioenergy derived from sea algae and the utilization of fibers, saccharide, and lipid of sea algae have been performing. Till now, algae fibers has been used for manufacturing of paper and reinforcing of polymer composites and the extracts of sea algae are used for cosmetics, pharmaceutical materials and food such as agar. Especially, algae fiber has so similar properties to cellulose in terms of crystallinity and functional groups that it can be utilized as reinforcements of biocomposites. Biocomposites as alternatives of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites are environmentally friendly polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers and are actively applying to the automobiles and construction industries. In this paper, characteristics of algae fiber and biocomposites reinforced with algae fiber as environmentally friendly energy materials have been introduced.

  • Several methods to resurface the lost cartilage of the knee have been used; multiple drilling, microfracture, abrasion arthroplasty. Resurfaced cartilages resulting from above techniques are mostly fibrocartilage. Autologous osteochondral graft transfer and autologous chondrocyte transfer are known to resurface the lost cartilage with mostly hyaline cartilage. This article reviews basic researches, indications, operative technique, and clinical results of autologous osteochondral graft transfer.

  • Wind turbine is composed by 3 major parts, rotor ass'y, nacelle ass'y and tower. There are two major point in nacelle cover analysis one is nacelle cover itself the other is cover support structure. Both of them are required strength proof with light weight. For the design of structure, the loads are calculated according to GL wind guideline Ed. 2003 and by the commercial F.E. codes,

  • GFRP based composite rotor blades were developed for 750 kW & 2 MW wind turbines. The blade sectional geometry was designed to have a general shell-spar and shear web structure. For verifying the structural safety under all relevant extreme loads specified in the GL guidelines, the structural analysis of the rotor blades was performed using commercial FEM codes. The static load carrying capacity, blade tip deflections and natural frequencies were evaluated to satisfy the strength and stability requirements. Full-scale proof tests of rotor blades were carried out with optical fiber sensors for real-time condition monitoring. Finally, the prototype of each rotor blade passed all proof tests for GL certification.

  • For the purpose of verifying the calculation, the rotor blade shall be subjected to test for the natural frequencies and the static loading within the scope of the assessment. This paper presents a full scale static test procedure of the rotor blade for certification by GL. This blade model is manes as KM24 designed for IEC type IA. The test and calculation values are all most similar. Also there is not founded any marks of cracks or buckling at the shell, and bonding area is T/E, L/E and shear web. Therefore, the test is successful and the rotor blade is satisfied the safety requirement at the maximum design load.
