  • In this paper, the solidification behaviour and compressive strength of fly ash, cement, and waste stone powder were studied each separately and with addition of each in different proportions. And also, we assessed stabilizing ability of waste stone powder in cement which was added in fly ash. The particle size of waste stone powder was found smaller than the fly ash and cement particle sizes. Moreover, when mixing all(fly ash, cement, and waste stone powder) showed distinctive crystal structure, and improved stiffness. In case of mixing fly ash, cement and waste stone powder in different proportions, the compressive strength was exceeded to the predicted compressive strength of 10 kgf/cm$^2$. The XRD analysis showed high contents of CaO in fly ash and SiO$_2$ in case of waste stone powder sample. Heavy metal emission experiment showed the 3mg/L of Pb after 14 days of mixing 150 kg/m$^3$ of cement with the 80$\sim$100 kg/m$^3$ of waste stone powder, which is fulfilling the National Waste Management Policy.

  • This paper describes a transmission power control method for power saving in 802.11b wireless LANs. We have first explored how much effects reducing transmission power has on communication performance. Then we propose a power control algorithm, whose approach is similar to that of TCP congestion control, determining an appropriate transmission power level by monitoring the retransmission rate. We have implemented an utility software on a Linux-based system and made several experiments to validate the proposed method. The results show that it is possible to save energy consumption by controlling transmission power without sacrificing communication performance.

  • The sub-prime crisis led to the collapse of US investment banks which were considered highly competitive during the Asian Financial Crisis. The event gave us a lesson on importance of the financial supervision. Additionally concerns rise over the fact that the role model of the Capital Market Law, created for the purpose of developing the capital market, is the US investment banks. This paper investigates if the prudential regulations, among them especially the capital regulation, are able to prevent the risk the arises from Korean financial firms operating investment bank business. The current capital requirement regulation, Net Capital Ratio(NCR), is not sufficient, because it's nature of being a ratio makes the NCR ineffective when assets and liabilities are concurrently rising. We also verified the internal model which measured the market risk, by comparing the US investment and Korean banks' diversification effect. The result of the test is that it is difficult to conclude the internal model has a critical defect. This paper's contribution is that it is not sufficient use only the capital regulation in supervising financial markets.

  • Optimum conditions for UV-radiated photopolymerization of unsaturated polyester that could be used as protecting layer of large diameter pipe were investigated in this paper. UV photopolymerization method was selected to solve the problems, arising when thermal polymerization by organic peroxide was used, such as the instability of peroxide initiator, the evolution of volatile organic compound, and thermal deformation of product. Two of the photo-initiators (Irgacure 819 and Darocure 1173) well known for its penetrating ability deep into the polymer layer were selected, and the optimum conditions for photopolymerization (1.5 phr initiator content, 1:1.2 initiator ratio, Ga lamp for UV source) were found from the thermal and mechanical test results of the resultant UP polymers. In addition, composite materials containing UP polymer and glass fiber were tested for hardness, impact strength, and flexural strength to find that the impact strength of composite significantly improved.

  • Confectionary and food products were collected from Korea and Japan. Types of packaging structure, amount of packaging materials used, basis weight of paperboard, and product to packaging ratio were evaluated for understanding confectionery and food packaging in both countries. Also, new packaging samples were designed and fabricated for reducing the use of packaging resources and for optimizing the product to packaging ratio. Korean confectionary products showed much higher empty space inside package than that of Japanese products, while food products were not significantly different between tow countries. There were no significant differences in the basis weight of paperboard collected. All of the re-designed confectionary products showed more than 15% saving in packaging resource compared to current confectionary products.

  • $ CO_2$ fixation of isolated intact spinach chloroplasts under saturating light began to decrease after 20 min, and stopped completely after 1 h. To identify the lesion sites for the die off, reconstituted chloroplast system was used with chloroplasts collected at several phases of time course. $ CO_2$ fixation was inhibited in the reconstituted chloroplasts made of thylakoids and stroma in the later phases, but showed a higher degree of inhibition by the participation of thylakoids than that of stroma in the later phases. Measurement of photophosphrylation and NADP reduction revealed that a severed thylakoidal damage was occurred at the later phases. This results indicate that the lesion sites for the die off are in the thylakoid.the thylakoid.

  • In this paper, we derive the gain of network coding when it is utilized for retransmission in wireless networks. To the end, we derive the outage probability of the network-coded transmission and express the diversity order as a function of the number of nodes and the node's listening probability. From the outage probability, we formulate the ${\epsilon}$-outage capacity. The network-coding gain is the ratio of the ${\epsilon}$-outage capacities between network-coded and non-coded transmissions. Under our system model, we find that the network-coding gain is a function of the diversity order. Moreover, when there are infinitely many nodes, we show that the network coding gain approaches $0.25{\epsilon}^{-1}$.

  • Industrial use of waste oyster shells is limited because of requiring excessive energy for converting natural oyster shells in the form of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) into calcium oxide (CaO) for this purpose. This study aimed to develop energy-saving process for producing solidifying agent using waste oyster shells for backfill materials. It was suggested that oyster shells were converted to calcium sulfates which were mixed with sodium hydroxide solution and red clay, forming solid specimen. The optimal concentrations of sulfuric acid for sulfation of oyster shell and sodium hydroxide to generate calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$), were determined. Unconfined compressive strength of solid specimen increased with increasing the content of solidifying agent while it increased also with increasing ratio of natural oyster shells to coal ash. The result clearly demonstrates that solidifying agent consisting of sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell, coal ash, and sodium hydroxide solution, can be effectively utilized for preparing backfill materials using natural oyster shell and coal ash. Sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell-based solidifying agent has not been previously developed and will contribute to broaden industrial application of waste oyster shells.

  • This research is an experimental work of developing a construction material using municipal wastewater sludge as liner and cover materials for waste disposal landfill. Weathered granite soil and flyash, produced as a by-product in the power plant, were used as the primary additives to improve geotechnical engineering properties of sludge. For secondary additives, bentonite and cement were mixed with sludge to decrease the permeability and to increase the shear strength, respectively. Various laboratory test required to evaluate the design criteria for liner and cover materials, were carried out by changing the mixing ratio of sludge with the additives. Basic soil properties such as specific gravity, grain size distribution, liquid and plastic limits were measured to analyze their effects on permeability, compaction, compressibility and shear strength properties of mixtures. Laboratory compaction tests were conducted to find the maximum dry densities and the optimum moisture contents of mixtures, and their effectiveness of compaction in field was consequently evaluated. Permeability tests of variable heads with compacted samples, and the stress-controlled consolidation tests with measuring permeabilities of samples during consolidation process were performed to obtain permeability, and to find the compressibility as well as consolidational coefficients of mixtures, respectively. To evaluate the long term stability of sludges, creep tests were also conducted in parallel with permeability tests of variable heads. On the other hand, for the compacted sludge decomposed for a month, permeability tests were carried out to investigate the effect of decomposition of organic matters in sludges on its permeability. Direct shear tests were performed to evaluate the shear strength parameters of mixed sludge with weathered granite, flyash and bentonite. For the mixture of sludge with cement, unconfined compression tests were carried out to find their strength with varying mixing ratio and curing time. On the other hand, CBR tests for compacted specimen were also conducted to evaluate the trafficability of mixtures. Various test results with mixtures were assessed to evaluate whether their properties meet the requirements as liner and cover materials in waste disposal landfill.
