Cultivation and use of bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) in ancient Korea (한반도 선·역사시대 박의 재배와 이용)

  • Although the bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) is a crop with a cultivation history of about 10,000 years in the Old and New Worlds, archaeological considerations on the cultivation and use of bottle gourds on the Korean Peninsula are extremely rare. Accordingly, we reviewed previous reports on bottle gourds and examined the morphological characteristics of seeds and rind fragments from the Korean Peninsula. The investigation yielded several conclusions. First, bottle gourd cultivation likely began during the Bronze Age alongside the introduction of so-called southern crops. Evidence suggests that bottle gourd remains were more prevalent during the Three-Kingdoms period, indicating its significance as a crop during the historical era. Second, bottle gourd seeds from the Three-Kingdoms period exhibit characteristics of both African and Asian subspecies, showcasing a high level of morphological diversity. Third, rind thickness indicates that bottle gourds found at the Bongseon-ri site were of varieties with large fruits. Taken together, it is concluded that the bottle gourd was introduced to the Korean Peninsula during the Bronze Age, and people cultivated a range of bottle gourd varieties during the Three-Kingdoms period.

Comparison of Rice Properties Between Rice Grown Under Conventional Farming and One Grown Under Eco-Friendly Farming Using Hairy Vetch (친환경 무농약 재배와 관행 재배 쌀의 특성비교)

  • The properties of non-waxy rice, Dongjin 1, cultivated with conventional farming (CF) and environmentally-harmonized farming (EHF) using hairy vetch were compared to determine rice water absorption, physicochemical and pasting properties, antioxidant activities of brown and white rice, and a sensory evaluation of cooked white rice was carried out. EHF was treated with green manure crops such as hairy vetch and chitinase, which produce microorganism culture solution. CF was applied with seed disinfection treatments, fertilizer herbicides, and agricultural chemicals for the control of pests and diseases. The absorption level of EHF rice was higher than that of CF rice grain, regardless of the cultivation methods used. The ash and crude lipid contents were higher, but protein and dietary fiber contents were lower in the CF rice than in the EHF rice. The total starch content, water binding capacity, and swelling power of white rice were higher than those of brown rice, regardless of the cultivation methods used. The DPPH's antioxidant activity was shown as follows: EHF brown rice, EHF white rice and CF rice, in a decreasing order. The initial pasting temperature of EHF rice was lower than that of CF rice, but the peak, cold, and breakdown viscosities exhibited reverse trends. The sensory evaluation showed that the cooked white rice cultivated with EHF was not significantly different from that cultivated with CF (p<0.05). The overall preference of cooked rice did not show significant differences between the two cultivation methods (p<0.05).

Development of Prototype Automatic Grafting System for Fruit-bearing Vegetables (박과 채소용 자동접목 시작기 개발)

  • 우리나라의 경우 각종 장해와 주년 수요의 증가에 따른 불시재배의 증가로 인하여 저온신장성, 병해저항성 등과 같이 작물의 내성증진을 목적으로 접목묘의 이용이 급속도로 신장되고 있다. 특시 연작장해가 심한 박과형 채소류는 대부분 접목재배가 필요한 실정이다. 그러나 국내의 경우, 접목작업은 거의 수작업으로 행해지며 세밀한 조작과 숙련성 그리고 많은 노력을 필요로 한다. 따라서, 접목 생산성을 높일 수 있는 저가의 자동화 시스템 개발이 요구된다. 다양한 접목법들 중 현재 농가에서 가장 광범위하게 이용되고 있는 호접은 삽접 및 절단접에 비하여 자동화가 어렵고 활착 후 절단작업이 부가적으로 필요하나 접목 후 순화공정이 간단하고 활착률이 높다. 본 논문에서는 호접과 삽접에 대하여 접목 후의 활착률 및 접목에 소요되는 작업시간을 비교하였고, 호접법에 의거하여 작업공정을 생력화한 육묘 자동접목 시작기를 개발하였다. 시작기는 농가조합 및 중규모 육묘장의 설비를 지향하여, 묘판 및 접목묘의 취급을 제외하고 1인 접목작업 형태의 자동화 시스템으로 개발하였다. 시작기는 크게 버퍼기능을 부착한 배치형 육묘장치부, 2세트에 공압 매니퓰레이터, 대목과 접수의 원할한 접목을 위해 설계한 특수 그리퍼, 각고 조절형 절단부, 진동형 클립공급부 그리고 자동 클립 장착장치로 구성하였다. 접목 작업시간은 대략 4ch 정도이나 작업시간의 조정이 가능하도록 하였다. 실험실에서 수행한 간이접목 시험 결과, 절단날이 대목과 접수의 접촉부위를 관통할 때 접촉면이 서로 어긋나는 경우가 발생하였으나 육묘들이 호접에 적정한 기하학적 물성 요건을 갖춘다면 80% 이상의 접목 육묘의 기하학적 물성에 따른 체계적인 접목시험이 필요하다.

Biocontrol of Cabbage Clubroot by the Organic Fertilizer Using Streptomyces sp. AC-3. (Streptomyces sp. AC-3을 이용한 배추 무사마귀병의 생물학적 방제)

  • This research is performed for a biological control of Chinese cabbage clubroot, we isolated an antagonistic bacterium AC-3 against Plasmodiophora sp., causal pathogens of cabbage clubroot. The isolated strain was identified as Streptomyces sp. by culture morphology, biochemical reactions, and homology research based on l6S rDNA sequences. Streptomyces sp. AC-3 produced chitinase (9.3 units/$m\ell$) in culture broth. So Plasmodiophora sp. mycelia changed abnonnal swelling, curling and branching mycelia by Streptomyces sp. AC-3 culture. In a field infected by Plasmodiophora sp., the treatment of a organic fertilizer added 2% Streptomyces sp. AC-3 microbial inoculant, it resulted in about 50% reducing the severity of cabbage clubroot significantly on cabbage plants compared with treated organic fertilizer plants. Additional disease such as sclerotinia rot, fusarium wilt and pythium rot were also significantly reduced by the treatment of the organic fertilizer added Streptomyces sp. AC-3 microbial inoculant.

Comparison of the Nutrient Composition and Quality of the Root of Allium hookeri Grown in Korea and Myanmar (국내 및 미얀마에서 재배된 삼채뿌리의 영양성분 및 품질특성 비교)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the nutritional components and quality characteristics of the root of Allium hookeri grown in Korea and Myanmar. The root of A. hookeri grown in Hadong, Korea (KR), contained higher levels of carbohydrate, crude ash, and crude lipid, but the root of A. hookeri grown in Shan, Myanmar (MR), contained higher levels of crude protein and crude fiber. The free sugar and organic acid contents were higher in KR than in MR. Fructose, glucose, and sucrose were the major free sugars and arginine was the major free amino acid. KR contained higher amounts of essential amino acids, non-essential amino acids, ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid, and citrulline than MR. Potassium was a prominent mineral constituent in both KR and MR, and KR contained higher mineral content than MR. KR contained twice the amount of sulfur and crude saponin, relative to MR.

Diversities of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Cultivated Field Soils of Korean Ginseng (금산의 인삼 재배 토양에 분포하는 수지상균근균의 다양성)

  • In this study, soil samples were collected from cultivated fields of 1-5 year old Korean ginseng in Geumsan, Korea. Spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were extracted from soils and identified using morphological characteristics and 18s rDNA sequences of the spores. Total 10 species of AMF were identified: Acaulospora longula, Archaeospora trappei, Glomus caledonium, Glomus etunicatum, Glomus intraradices, Glomus mosseae, Glomus sp., Paraglomus occultum, Paraglomus brasilianum, and Scutellospora heterogama. Relative abundance of spores of A. trappei were increased with increase of cultivation period of the ginseng. However, relative abundance of other species of AMF and Shannon diversity (H') of AMF were significantly decreased with the increase of cultivation periods of the ginseng.

New Records of Fungi Isolated from Indoor Air of Greenhouse Used for Shiitake Cultivation in Korea (표고 재배사 실내 공기에서 분리한 국내 미기록 진균)

  • Mold contamination is one of the detrimental factors affecting sawdust media-based shiitake cultivation in greenhouses. During mold monitoring of indoor air of greenhouses, several fungi were isolated. Among them, Aspergillus pulverulentus and Cosmospora butyri were found to be new in Korea and Lecanicillium psalliotae and L. antillanum were known in Korea without taxonomic validation. In this study the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA region or ${\beta}$-tubulin gene of the four identified species were described.

The Fertility and Some Agronomic Characteristics of Morus tiliaefolia Makino Growing Wild in the Korean Peninsula (韓半島에 자생하는 돌뽕나무(Morus tiliaefolia Makino)의 稔性 및 재배학적 특성)

  • The agronomic characteristics and fertility of Morus tiliaefolia growing wild in Korean peninsula are as follows. The possibility of seed formation is 46∼80% and that of germination is 19∼28%. The height period of making flower is April 4-May 3, it means that is later than Morus bombycis, faster than Kaeryangppong. Green tip sprouting stage in spring is April 21∼24. This is later than Morus bombycis and faster than Kaeryangppong. The leaf has very big width and the ratio of leaf length to leaf width is 1.05. The thickness of leaf is thicker than Morous bombycis. There are a lot of matter of soluble nitrogen free, crude ash, and are little crude protein, crude fat and crude fiber in chemical contents of maturation leaf. The attitude of low cutting is spread out type and the branch is long type. The internord length is long. It is weak against cold and die-back.

Root Starch Yield and Physio-Chemical Characteristics of Bracken (Pteridium aquilinum Kuhn) according to Harvesting Time (고사리 뿌리의 채취시기에 따른 전분 추출수율과 이화학적 특성)

  • 고사리(Pteridium aquilinum Kuhn)는 고사리 속(Pteridium spp.)에 속하는 양치식물의 총칭으로서 우리나라에는 22과 70속 272종이 분포되어 있는 것으로 보고되었다. 고사리의 어린 순에는 가식부 100g 당 칼슘 15.0mg, 칼륨 185.0mg 등이 함유되어 있으며 골다공증, 심혈관 질환 등에 효과가 있고 식이섬유로 인해 변비 예방에도 유용한 것으로 알려져 있다. 우리나라의 고사리 재배면적은 2019년 기준 5,349ha 수준을 보이고 있으며 전체 산채류 재배면적에서 26%의 비중을 차지하고 있으나 재배면적의 증가에 따라 고사리 재배의 부가가치를 높일수 있는 방안이 요구되고 있는 실정으로 그 중 고사리 뿌리에서 추출한 전분은 중국 및 일본 등지에서 면류나 제과용으로 이용되고 있어 고사리 재배의 부가가치를 향상시킬 수 있는 방안으로 기대되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 고사리 뿌리의 채취시기에 따른 뿌리 전분의 생산성과 이화학적 특성을 조사하기 위해 2020년 3월 26일부터 10월 28일 까지 5회에 걸쳐 뿌리를 수확하여 세척한 후 고무망치로 파쇄하고 수침 방법을 이용해 추출한 전분의 추출수율과 이화학적 특성을 조사하였다. 채취시기별 고사리 뿌리의 생산성은 7월 27일 수확에서 3,783.3kg/10a로 유의하게 높은 수량을 보였다. 파쇄한 고사리 뿌리를 24시간 sodium metabisulfite 0.4% V/W 용액에 수침하여 전분을 추출한 후 24시간 간격으로 3회에 걸쳐 진탕, 침전과 세척의 과정을 거친 후 조사한 전분 추출 수율은 3월 26일 수확한 뿌리에서 7.6%로 가장 높았고 7월 27일과 9월 24일 채취한 경우에서는 전분이 검출되지 않았으며 10월 28일에는 4.9%의 유의하게 낮았다. 추출한 전분의 색도분석에서 L값은 채취시기가 늦어질수록 높아지는 경향을 보였고 a, b값은 낮아지는 경향을 보여 전분의 색도가 향상되는 경향을 보였으며, 신속점도측정기로 조사한 전분의 호화특성에서는 채취시기가 늦어질수록 전분의 최고점도는 높아졌으나 최저점도 및 최종점도는 낮아지는 경향을 나타냈다. 전분의 무기물 함량은 3월 26일과 5월 25일 채취하는 경우 Fe > Ca > Mg > K > P의 순으로 함량이 높았으나 10월 28일 채취한 경우에서는 Fe와 Ca이 감소되고 K 함량은 증가하여 Ca > Fe > Mg > K > P의 순으로 무기물 함량이 높게 나타났다.
