This study analyzed nonmetallic inclusions in iron swords with a ring pommel excavated in the Ipbuk-dong, Suwon. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS) was used to estimate the iron-making temperature, and we compared the oxide with $SiO_2$ to investigate the heat-treatment technology in the production of iron swords with a ring pommel by investigating the artificial insertion of a slag former and the metallurgical structure. From the wustite observed in most of the specimens, it is judged that these swords were produced by heating and forging iron smelted at a low temperature using the solid reduction method. In addition, judging from the partial presence of $P_2O_5$, it is assumed that they were smelted directly with natural ore, not calcined. From the ratios of $CaO/SiO_2$ and $TiO_2/SiO_2$, it is judged that the raw material for iron-making was iron ore and that a calcareous slag former was not artificially inserted. The structure of the blade part on the front end was pure iron. From the high carbon content of the blade part on the ring pommel and the formation of a martensitic structure and pearlite colony, it is judged that they were tempered after carburizing and that the back, handle part, and ring pommel were unintentionally carburized. Judging from the structure of these specimens, it was noted that they were produced by applying artificial partial heat-treatment technology. This study attempted to present a more scientific analysis by using the method of interpretation through component analysis of nonmetallic inclusions appearing in one relic by the ratio of the oxide divided by $SiO_2$. It is judged that reinterpreting the arguments by the results of the existing analysis and research in this way can obtain different interpretations.

Organic waste, which is defined as wastes derived from various biological organisms that contain more than 40% of organic materials, is generated about 100 million tons per year in Korea. These organic wastes are now controlled by several governmental entities, under different rules and regulations, leading to the improper management and inefficient treatment. Therefore, integrated management system is primarily needed for the efficient recycling of organic waste. In this study, six kinds of organic wastes, which are food waste, sludges(sewage, waste water, night soil), animal excreta, animals and plants residues, and three kinds of recycling by-products(compost, feed, anaerobic digestion by-products) made of organic wastes, were analyzed for their physical and chemical characteristics. On the basis of this result, a possibility for the efficient recycling of organic waste was investigated.
The ironware production technology is a measure to fathom the society's level of development in time. To understand iron-manufacure methods in the past, various investigations on the fine structures and additions of ironware remains and Iron ingot have been conducted in a way of natural science. This study metallurgically reclassifies remains excavated in iron-manufacture remains located in Beokje, Goyang, which are thought to be in time of Goryeo Dynasty, and draws an inference from the element analysis on the iron-manufacture and smelting technology. Iron ingot samples with a cast iron structure are divided into those with a white cast iron structure and those with a grey cast iron rich in P. The P content of grey cast iron appeared to be the result of adding a flux agent like lime, iron ingot and carbon steel iron ingot with a cast iron structure excavated in the area is regarded as pig iron which was made without a refining process. In this study it seems that two methods of making ironware were used in the area; one is the method of making ironware by pouring cast iron to the casting, and the other is the method of making carbon steel through the refinement of pig iron. It appears that highly even steel structure of carbon steel and a small amount of MnS inclusion are very similar with that of the modern steel to which Mn is artificially added. Nevertheless, these data alone cannot be used to determine the source of Mn in the carbon steel of the excavated from the iron-manufacture remains, which raises the need for further studies on the source and the possibility of carbon steel via the iron-manufacture process of cast iron.
The remains found in Geumcheok-ri, Gyeongju are located in close proximity to the Ancient Tombs in Geumcheok-ri, Gyeongju (Historic Site) which were built between the late 5th and early 6th centuries, and these tombs are known to belong to the powerful rulers of that area. Using metallurgical techniques, this study was conducted on the iron objects obtained from the excavated remains in Geumcheok-ri, Gyeongju which are presumed to have a close relation to the nearby ruins that played an important role in the growth of Silla. To identify differences in manufacturing techniques based on the purpose of the iron objects, eight objects were selected after classifying them by use and the microstructure and non-metallic inclusions were investigated. The analyses results confirmed that the manufacturing process involved forging iron with a high or low carbon content to produce a particular shape, and that the carburization process was applied to iron post forging a shape to increase its strength when necessary. The mechanical properties were improved by selectively applying the steelmaking method and the heat treatment technique considering the functions of the parts, and the low temperature reduction was applied to the smelting process. Furthermore, in comparison with the iron objects excavated from the remains located in the center of Gyeongju and its outskirts, it is confirmed that there is similarity in the smelting and manufacturing techniques between these objects.
The alkaline earth metal Ba has a relatively low melting point. Because of its significantly high affinity to oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur, it is highly functional as a steel refining agent. But Ba can adversely affect the properties of steel especially the workability, because it can form a variety of inclusions. So, understanding of these inclusions is needed for improvement of the properties of steel. Thus a fundamental study in the formation behavior of non-metallic inclusions in Ba added Hyper Duplex STS melts was investigated. The amount of Ba, holding time and temperature were considered as experimental variables. The number of non-metallic inclusions decreased and the large particle size of non-metallic inclusions increased as the amount of Ba increased. The number of non-metallic inclusions also decreased and the large particle size increased with increased holding times and temperatures of molten steel.

In a HLW repository, the buffer is exposed to an elevated temperature due to a radioactive decay and geochemical conditions for a long time and such a hydrothermal condition may cause a significant loss of its barrier function. This study carried out hydrothermal tests with a domestic smectite clay to investigate the changes in the expandibility, layer charge, and cation exchange capacity of the smectite. When the temperature and potassium concentration in solution was increased for the hydrothermal treatments, the expandibility decreased, the layer charge negatively increased, and the CEC also decreased.
The effect of non-metallic inclusions on the HAZ hydrogen induced cracking was investigated. Quench and temper high tensile strength steels containing various sulphur contents were employed. The sulphur contents range between 0.007% and 0.040%. Non-metallic inclusions were mainly MnS type sylphide and Mn-Al-Si type. The sensitivity of HAZ delayed cracking was evaluated by implant testing. Diffusible hydrogen content was varied by controlling the moisture absorbing condition of manual arc welding electrodes. The one was asreceived condition, the other was dipping the electrodes in the water for ten minutes. The main results obtained were as follows; 1) The results of implant test showed that critical stress increased with increasing S content up to 0.013%. But steel containing 0.040%S showed lower critical stress than that of 0.013% S. These result suggest that there will be optimum S content to prevent HAZ delayed cracking of high strength steels. 2) Under the lower D.H.C. level, critical stress was increased with rolling reduction, but higher D.H.C. level, effect of rolling reduction was not recognized.

Inclusions in forged large steel ingots of plan carbon steel and tool steel are investigated using optical microscop observation and WDX analysis. The large nonmetallic inclusions which is over $30\sim300{\mu}m$ in their diameter were observed in the samples that has been no good on a nondestructive test. The most of the inclusions were consist of some kind of oxides, ${Al_2}{O_3}$, $SiO_2$, CaO, MgO in forms of particles and glassy with an iron particles. The experimental large steel ingot was cast with a pouring temperature which is about ten centigrade higher than the field standard. The inclusions were observed in the test ingot are the smaller than that was in a usual forged steel ingot and is spherical shape with a glassy agglomerated ${Al_2}{O_3}-SiO_2-CaO-MgO$ particle. The pouring temperature is affected on removing the nonmetallic inclusions during the solidification by a floating mechanism.

In terms of behavior of fatigue cracks propagated after build-up around the artificial drilled miro-hole, this study has been made of the build-up process of slips and micro cracks, behavior of micro-crack propagation and the definition of fatigue limit under the rotating bending stress with low carbon steel. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The fatigue limit is the repropagating critical stress for the nonpropagating cracks which have grown to some limit around the micro-hole in regard of the magnitude of micro-hole. (2) Behavior of the slips and micro-cracks initiation are occurring simultaneously in front and in rear of micro-hole tips in the view of the rotational direction, regardless of the magnitude of micro-hole. (3) Behavior of fatigue crack propagation is different from magnitude of micro-hole, its behavior is propagation of single crack about respectively large hole, but about respectively small hole, fatigue crack propagated joining phenomena of micro-cracks. (4) The behavior of fatigue fracture is affected by the factor of its defects in the view of magnitude of micro-hole when the diameter of the micro-holes are smaller than 50.mu.m, and this is also affected with the size effect of micro-hole diameter.
