This study was performed to discover the optimum operation conditions for the advanced water treatment using the ceramic membrane, introduced the first in the nation at the Y water treatment plant (WTP). The result of investigation to find the optimum operation conditions which can continue preserving the filtration performance as well as satisfying both the economics and the water quality is as follows. In the ordinary water quality condition of the Y WTP, the optimum filtration time(the backwash period), which can minimize the production of backwash waste and preserve the membrane performance was examined to be 4.0 hours on basis of institution capacity ($16,000m^3/day$). Examining the recovery rate of TMP from the chemical cleaning (CIP) discovered that the inorganic contaminants, which cause membrane fouling, such as iron, manganese, aluminum, were removed through the acidic cleaning using citric acid, whereas the membrane recovery rate was found to be low. But, on the other hand, the TMP was recovered to the initial value from the alkali cleaning using the NaOCl. Therefore, the main contaminant causing the fouling was determined to be hydrophilic organic compound( biopolymer). The membrane recovery rate is highly influenced by the temperature of the cleaning chemical. That is, the rate increased with increasing temperature.
This study was carried out to find the optimum chemical cleaning (CIP) conditions for ceramic microfiltration membrane process of Y drinking water treatment plant. B train consists of coagulation as pretreatment process with membrane was chemically cleaned 9 times more than that of A train with ozonation and coagulation. The frequent CIP of B train was due to improper CIP method suggested by membrane manufacture as well as different membrane fouling between A and B train resulting from the different pretreatment processes. That is, recovery rate of CIP was overestimated because the rate was calculated based on normalized trans membrane pressure (TMP) rather than normalized permeability. And also, iron oxide fouling was ineffectively removed by citric acid. By using a mixture of 1% citric acid and 0.1 N sulfuric acid as reagent for acid CIP step, the recovery rate of CIP was the highest while CIP efficiency by 0.1 N sulfuric acid was the lowest. When sulfuric acid concentration increased from 0.1 N to 0.3 N in mixture, total recovery rate of CIP was not increased due to the decreased CIP efficiency in alkali CIP step by 0.3% NaOCl although its rate in acid CIP step was increased. It was proved through the experiment result of CIP sequence changes that an acid followed by alkali CIP was more effective than that of the reverse method.

The utilization of multiple water sources becomes important due to the master plan for development of water supply released by Ministry of Environment, Korea in 2018. In this study, therefore, the analysis of comprehensive effect in blending applicable water sources in Daesan where 100,000 ㎥/d seawater desalination plant will be constructed for industrial use was performed. The increase in mixing ratio of other water sources with seawater reduced salinity up to 50%, but negatively impacted the turbid and organic matter. Lab-scale reverse osmosis performance test also found that membrane fouling was exacerbated in blended water condition. The simulation results of reverse osmosis indicated 39% energy saving on average is expected at the one-to-one blending ratio, however, long-term performance test at the pilot-scale plant is highly required to evaluate the inclusive impact of mixing seawater and other water sources.
The study was carried out to find effects of the saponins that were extracted from red ginseng on the growth of, aflatoxins production by, and protein patterns of Aspergillus flavus NRRL 3357. A. flavus with $10^6$ conidia as grown at $30^{\circ}C$ for seven days on the enriched medium. Mycelial growth and pH changes of medium which cultured the mold, were similar to those of the control group. However, aflatoxin which produced by the mold was less than that of the control in all concentration of the saponin. To be more specific, 0.3 % of the saponin inhibited production of aflatoxin $B_1$ and $G_1$ to the extent of 31.6 and 21% of the control. The protein peaks of A. flavus at the fourth day of the culture were shown high intensity near the level of 14,300 daltons. However, the mold which cultured in the medium containing the saponin showed low intensity of protein than that of the control group on all molecular weight.
This study was conducted to find out the soil $CO_2$ emission characteristic due to rain fall pattern and intensity changes. Using Automatic Opening and Closing Chambers (AOCCs), we have measured annual soil respiration changes in Pinus koraiensis plantation at Seoul National University experimental forest in Mt. Taehwa. In addition, we have monitored heterotrophic respiration at trenching sites ($4{\times}6m$). Based on the one year data of soil respiration and heterotrophic respiration, we observed that 24% of soil respiration was derived from root respiration. During the rainy season (end of July to September), soil respiration at trenching site and trenching with rainfall interception site were measure during portable soil respiration analyzer (GMP343, Vaisala, Helsinki, Finland). Surprisingly, even after days of continuous heavy rain, soil water content did not exceed 20%. Based on this observation, we suggest that the maximum water holding capacity is about 20%, and relatively lower soil water contents during the dry season affect the vital degree of trees and soil microbe. As for soil respiration under different rain intensity, it was increased about 14.4% under 10 mm precipitation. But the high-intensity rain condition, such as more than 10 mm precipitation, caused the decrease of soil respiration up to 25.5%. Taken together, this study suggests that the pattern of soil respiration can be regulated by not only soil temperature but also due to the rain fall intensity.
This study aims at classifying and interpreting on the forest vegetation located in the whole area of Mt. Boryeonsan in Noeunmyeon, Chungju city, Chungcheongbuk Province, Korea using the methodology of the ZM school of phytosociology. The forest vegetation was classified into one Larix leptolepis afforestation, five secondary communities including Qurecus acutissima community, Pinus densiflora community, Quercus aliena community, Quercus serrata community, Quercus variabilis community and one association, Ainsliaeo-Quercetum mongolicae Song et al. 1999(Rhododendro schlippenbachii-Quercion mongolicae, Aceri pseudosieboldiani-Quercetalia mongolicae, Quercetea mongolicae). The research expatiated on the relationship between species composition of the forest communities and the environmental conditions, such as human interference, altitude, slope, topography and chemical properties of soil, and also analyzed the life form by each community. As a result, the Ainsliaeo-Quercetum mongolicae was judged as the most stable community among the forest communities identified here. On the other hand, a division of cluster analysis based on the dominance of the component species, appeared similar to the community units classified phytosociologically. Thus, it is inferred that the survey area will be dominated by the potential natural vegetation, Ainsliaeo-Quercetum mongolicae finally, if progressive succession is advanced continuously.
The water treatment plants in Seoul Metropolitan Area, which are under Korea Water Resources Corporation(KOWACO)'s management, take water from Paldang Reservoir in Han River System for drinking water supply. There are taste and odor (T&O) problems in the finished water because the conventional treatment processes do not effectively remove the T&O compounds. As part of countermeasures for taste and odor control, KOWACO is planning to introduce advanced water treatment process such as ozone and GAC in near future. This study evaluated the removal characteristics of T&O and dissolved organic matter (DOM) to find design and operation parameters of advanced water treatment processes in a pilot-scale treatment plant. The GAC adsorption capacity for DOC in the two GAC system (GAC and $O_3$-GAC) at an EBCT of 14min was mostly exhausted after 9months. The differency of the removal efficiency of DOC between $O_3$-GAC and GAC increased with increasing operation time because the bioactivity in $O_3$-GAC process was enhanced by post-ozone process. Removal by conventional treatment was unable to reach the target TON(threshold odor number) of 3 but GAC systems at an EBCT(empty bed contact time) of 14 min were able to archive the target with few exception. During the high T&O episodes, PAC as a pretreatment together with GAC could be useful option for T&O control. However, substantial TON removal continued for more than two year (> 90,000 bed volumes). At the spiking of less concentration 26 to 61 ng/L in the influent of GAC systems, GAC absorber and $O_3$-GAC processes could meet the treatment target. The better spike control after 12 and 19 months of operation compared to that after 7 months of operation is a strong indication of biological control. The results presented in this study had shown that $O_3$-GAC process was found to be more effective for T&O control than GAC process. And the main removal mechanism in GAC systems were adsorption capacity and biodegradation.
A phytosociological survey carried out using the Z.-M. School’s methodology and system of numerical-classification analyses, this study sought to classify the syntaxa of forest vegetation on Mt. Byeokbang and to collect basic data on the transitional zones of the southern Korean peninsula’s coastal region. The syntaxa were classified into three physiognomic types and nine communities, including (1) evergreen coniferous forests (Eurya japonica-Pinus thunbergii community and Ardisia japonica-Pinus densiflora community), (2) summer-green, broad-leaved forests (Chloranthus japonicus-Quercus serrate community, Syneilesis palmata-Quercus mongolica community, Quercus acutissima community, Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana community, Fraxinus siebolidiana-Quercus dentate community, and Deutzia glabrata-Lindera erythrocarpa community), and (3) artificial afforestation (Alnus firma afforestation). The Chloranthus japonicus-Quercus serrata community, Syneilesis palmata-Quercus mongolica community, Fraxinus siebolidiana-Quercus dentata community, Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana, community and Deutzia glabrata-Lindera erythrocarpa community were closely evaluated for national vegetation naturalness. It was confirmed that the Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana community was endemic to Korea. Most syntaxa were defined as a secondary forestation due to various human activities (e.g., forest fires, logging, digging, climbing, etc.). The results of a canonical-correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that human activities, altitude, humus depth, rock cover ratio, slope, etc. were the main ecological factors determining the classified plant communities’ distribution patterns.

Thermal stability and quality change during storage of red pepper oleoresin were studied. Upon heat treatment, carotenoids in oleoresin from red pepper were more stable under nitrogen than air. In the thermal stabilities, the presence of air at $100^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and 10 hours were 69.1% and 42.3%, respectively ; whereas, in the presence of nitrogen, 95.4% and 92.3%, respectively. In contrast, capsaicin was comparatively stable upon heat treatment in the presence of air. The retentions of capsaicin at $100^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and 10 hours were 84.7% and 81.3% with air, those were 90.7% and 87.5% with nitrogen, respectively. Color appearance showed close relation to the stability of total carotenoids during 60 days storage at varying temperatures ; $5^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C\;and\;40^{\circ}C$ were 69.4%, 48.0% and 35.1%, respectively. The degradation of total carotenoids during storage could be interpreted as a first order reaction. The activation energy obtained from the Arrhenius plot was 5.03 kcal/mole. Conversely, capsaicin was very stable under storage temperatures. More than 90% of capsaicin was remained upon completion of storage. In the mean time, pH of oleoresin was increased slightly as increasing storage temperatures.

Hemorrhagic shock is a common cause of death in the emergency department. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between blood loss as a percent of the total estimated blood volume (% blood loss) and changes in several physiological parameters. The other goal was to achieve an accurate prediction of percent blood loss for hemorrhagic shock in rats using a linear regression model. We allocated 60 Sprague-Dawley rats into four groups: 0ml, 2ml, 2.5ml, 3 mL/100 g during 15 min. We analyzed the heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiration rate, and body temperature in relation to the percent blood loss. We generated a linear regression model predicting the percent blood loss using a randomly chosen 360 data set and the R-square value of the model was 0.80. Root mean square error of the tested 360 data set using the linear regression was 5.7%. Even though the linear regression model is not directly applicable to clinical situation, our method of predicting % blood loss could be helpful in determining the necessary fluid volume for resuscitation in the future.
