This study the presents survey results of a families living with children with disabilities in northern Seoul (Nowon-gu and Dobong-gu) that provides various educational services. This study investigates the current usage and needs of community resources for children with disabilities by the families in the inclusive and segregated care as well as education centers to provide information for the effective implementation of the current system. A total of 109 surveys were distributed and 62 (57%) were returned. 44 families in the 14 inclusive care and education centers as well as 18 families in the 2 segregated care and education centers participated in this study. They were asked to report on access to community resources that include compulsory education, family support, medical treatment, counseling services, commuting support, ways to gain necessary information, current use, and further needs for community resources for their children. Research results indicated that families in two different types of child care centers needed differentiated community services. Parents who use a segregated child care center demanded physical accessibility and increased numbers of highly qualified teachers; however, parents who use the inclusive child care center require the unified information system for the community resources. Survey findings are discussed related to differences between the two types of child care centers. Implications for sharing comprehensive information through child care teachers and directors of child care centers and future research are also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the information needs, information seeking behavior, and information use of people who seek information on Korea overseas. A total of 382 survey responses from 52 countries and in-depth interview data from 26 participants were collected and analyzed. As a result, the respondents were categorized into three groups, namely Hallyu culture enjoyment, Korean language learning, and Korean studies research groups, by their unique information needs and information seeking behaviors. Pandemic boosted the demand for digital data expansion and digital archiving efforts. Various information problems caused by language, technology and policy obstacles were revealed. Findings suggest strategies to assist Korea-related information users.
Pine needles have long been used as a traditional health-promoting medicinal food in Korea. To investigate the effects of pine (pinus densiflora) needle extracts on blood flow and serum lipid improvement were assessed in vivo. 8 week-old Sprague Dawley strain rats were divided into four groups of seven rats each; CON, 0.5% CHOL, HOT water and Sub-supercritical group. Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride contents were lower in the CON group than the 0.5% CHOL group. Three weeks of feeding hot water and sub-supercritical extract resulted in a decrease in serum triglyceride and total cholesterol level. The level of HDL-cholesterol in the 0.5% CHOL group was significantly (p<0.05) reduced compared to the CON group, but it had a tendency to increase with pine needle extract supplementation. Blood passage time of the pine needle extracts supplemented group was higher than the 0.5% CHOL group. Microscopic observation showed that whole blood passed smoothly through the micro channels in pine needle extracts supplemented groups. The platelet aggregation ability of the groups treated with pine needle extracts was less than that of the 0.5% CHOL group. All these results suggest that pine needle extracts might improve blood homeostasis mediated via antiplatelet activities.
Upper extremity dysfunction is a common consequence following stroke. Spontaneous recovery during the first six months post-stroke is rigorous and considered as a significant indicator of potential long-term progress. Various approaches have been utilized to regain functional upper limb movement necessary for independent living; however, conventional therapy approaches have failed to prove consistency, especially for subacute stroke patients. There is, thus, a need for innovative therapeutic strategies that motivate stroke survivors to facilitate neural and functional recovery during the critical window immediately following stroke. The effect of music on physical enhancement has been frequently reported in the field of medicine as well as neurorehabilitation. The efficacy of rhythm on lower extremity deficits has been well established. Yet, the rationale for using instrumental music making enhancing subacute upper extremities rehabilitation is not clearly described to date. Based on the key mechanism of music as sensori-motor movement facilitator, this paper reviews previous empirical research that utilized music-based interventions for upper extremity rehabilitation for stroke patients, either in the form of receptive or expressive activity. This paper, further, focuses on the current research trends in subacute stroke upper limb rehabilitation and provides applicable rationale of using instrumental music playing.
Purpose: To investigate the physical and biochemical parameters related with elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in obese children. Methods: One hundred forty-two obese or overweight children who visited the out-patient clinics of Chungnam National University Hospital between January 2006 and August 2008 were enrolled. Physical measures and biochemical tests were performed in all patients. Liver sonography was performed in 43 patients. They were divided into the following 2 groups based on ALT levels: group I, normal ALT levels (n=65); and group II, elevated ALT levels (n=77). We compared the physical measures, biochemical results, and ultrasonographic findings of the livers in both groups. Other causes of elevated serum ALT levels were ruled out. Results: The male-to-female ratios were 1.6:1 in group I and 7.6:1 in group II. Among physical parameters, the waist circumference-to-height ratio and hip circumference-to-height ratio were significantly higher in group II (p=0.001 and 0.046, respectively). Among biochemical parameters, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), ${\gamma}$-glutamyltransferase (${\gamma}$-GT), and total cholesterol levels were significantly higher in group II (p<0.001, 0.001, and 0.001, respectively). The AST/ALT ratio was <1 (mean, 0.55) and statistically lower in group II. There was a positive correlation between the serum ALT level and ${\gamma}$-GT (p<0.001, r=0.750), and a positive correlation between the serum ALT level and the waist circumference-to-height ratio in group II (p<0.001, r=0.401). Conclusion: The results suggest that the waist circumference-to-height ratio and ${\gamma}$-GT may be associated with elevated alanine aminotransferase activity in obese children.
The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of cataracts in a rural area of Kyung-Buk province. Cataract is the main cause of blindness and visual impairment in the world. Recently, the number of age-related cataract surgeries has increased remarkably. In spite of such an increase in the number of patients, there are still many cataract patients with highly deteriorated visual function who have had no occasion to receive an ocular examination. In order to screen such patients the author assessed 636 individual(1272 eyes) aged 50 years or more who had wanted to be examined generally in two area. Chilgok and Munkyung, Kyung-Buk province using a simplified cataract screening system recently proposed by Sasaki et al. Kanazawa Medical University in Japan. The results obtained are as follows. The number of visual impairment patients in this study group was 493(77.5%). They were screened by cataract screening system. Primary screening examination detected 448 subjects to be suspected of cataract while the subsequent secondary examination narrowed this number of subjects to 308(48.4%). Final number of subjects to be diagnosed of cataract was 421(66.2%). The rate of incidence, according to the age, was 27.5% in the 50 year-olds age group, 62.5% in the 60's age group, 86.1% in the 70's age group and 94.3% in the 80's age group and upwards. This results concluded that cataract is the main cause of blindness and visual impairment and is an important public eye health care problem of aged population in rural Korea. Methods of tackling the cataract problem(both backlog and incident), and other eye health needs are recommended. The need to extend eye health service to the rural areas is emphasized.
Purpose: Lymphedema is edema developing mainly in the arms and legs due to an abnormal lymphatic system, over one hundred millions of patient worldwide suffer from it. At present, prevention is the best treatment. Thus, It is important to know which patient are more pone to develop it in order to prevent it. By evaluating the risk factor for lymphedema, we intended to find the effective prevention. Methods: We have investigated that outpatients who chiefly complained of lymphedema visited the lymphedema clinic at one university hospital from September 1 in 2003 to August 31 in 2005. We evaluated the risk factor for lymphedema by questionnaires. Questionnaire consists of demographic data, disease factor, treatment factor, posttreatment factor. We evaluated the correlation between lymphedema with each factor. Results: The total number of patients was 50, 19 patients with breast cancer and 31 patients with cervical cancer. In terms of stages of edema, 12 patients were below stage 1 and 38 patients were above stage 2. The incidence of lymphangitis was more frequent, more obese and the impairment of the site of edema site more severe, the stage of cancer was higher in the patients higher than stage 2 than in the patients below stage 1 (P>0.05). Conclusion: Lymphedema is more severe when the cancer stage in higher, accompanying more frequent infections, more obesity and more impairment at the site of edema site. Above all, cancer stage and the impairment of edema site are impossible to correct but obesity and infection may be corrected. Therefore we speculate that we are able to protect the aggravation of edema by weight reduction and infection control.
The culture is an integral factor when we deal with the quality of life of members of society, and the cultural right is accepted as the basic right. However, the cultural right of the disabled in our society stays in the conditions of the discrimination and alienation by social prejudices and barriers against people with disabilities, and that results from the lack of understanding as a right. The aim of this study is to further raise awareness about the cultural right of the disabled as the basic human right, make it clear to be a universal right based on that, and insist on implementing 'Affirmative Action' for actualizing the disabled's cultural right to equality. The political measures derived from this study to guarantee and realize the cultural right of the disabled are as follows. First, the target extent of cultural voucher system should be expand to not recipients of national basic livelihood guarantees and near poverty groups, but all the disabled. Second, to take full charge of the cultural support of the disabled as a independent organization, it is necessary to establish Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism-affiliated 'Bureau of Culture for Persons with Disabilities'. Third, the nationwide survey on cultural activities and desires of the disabled periodically is required.
Purpose: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess the nutritional states and investigate the energy intake of tube-fed patients with severe neurodevelopmental disability. Methods: Eighty six tube-fed patients with severe neurodevelopmental disability were studied. Heights were measured by flexible scale segmentally. Nutritional parameters of weight, triceps skinfold thickness and mid-arm circumference were also measured. Total caloric intakes through the tube were calculated. Results: The anthropometric results showed that nutritional states of tube-fed patients with severe neurodevelopmental disability were poor. The mean daily caloric intake was much less than daily energy requirement (mean=45.2% of requirement). The caloric intake was 7.2 kcal/height (cm), 57.0 kcal/weight (kg). Height was more related with caloric intake (r=0.476) than weight (r=0.263). Conclusion: These results provide that tube-fed patients with severe neurodevelopmental disability were growth retarded and their energy intakes were much less than daily energy requirements. The preliminary evidence was that they need adequate nutritional supply.
Hemiplegic migraine (HM) is a rare subtype of migraine with aura and is accompanied by a fully reversible motor aura. HM can occur in two forms: familial or sporadic. Currently, three genes are related to familial HM. Typically, HM occurs in the first or second decade of life and involves gradually progressing aura symptoms in succession, accompanied by headaches. The aura includes visual, sensory, motor, aphasic and often basilar-type symptoms. Motor aura (weakness) is related to the regions where the sensory aura is involved, and it usually starts at the hand before spreading to the arm and face. Aphasia is a common form of speech aura, but does not typically present as a difficulty in understanding. In this case report, the sensory-motor aura started at the right face and then gradually progressed to the right leg without any symptoms in the ipsilateral upper extremity. To the best of my knowledge, there has been no previous case report for the presentation of a hemiplegic migraine, as in this case report. As there is a possibility of misdiagnosis of Bell's palsy at the early stage of this case, this case report suggests that a physician should consider the rare possibility of stroke or HM when a patient presents with unilateral facial palsy.
