  • As one of the serial studies on the taxonomy of Conthocamptus mirabilis species group in South Korea, C. semicirculus Kikuchi, widely distributed in the southern part of the Far East, and C. coreensis n. sp. from the middle west of South Korea are recorded. Intraspecific variability of some important characters like outer caudal setae and the spinous process of male leg 3 exopod was examined in Korean population of C. semicirculus. Canthocamptus coreensis n. sp. possesses the plesiomorphic characters of the round and narrow hyaline membrane of anal operculum and lacking the sexual reverse transformation in female caudal rami, while it also evolves the apomorphic ones of the modified outer apical setae of male leg 4 exopod and the spinous process of male leg 3 exopod. A key to the five species of the species group known from Korea is prepared.

  • The effects of resin additives and inorganic compounds addition on the thermal decomposition of low density polyethylene(LDPE) resin have been studied in a thermal analyzer(TGA, DSC) and a small batch reactor. The silica-alumina type compounds tested were kaolinite, bentonite, perlite, diatomaceous earth, activated clay and clay. The resin additives were antiforgging-agent and longevity-agent. As the results of TGA experiments, addition of antifogging-agent, longevity-agent and clay increased the temperature of the maximum reaction rate($T_{max}$). The silica-alumina type inorganic materials increased the pyrolysis reraction rate in the order of activated clay, diatomaceous earth, bentonite, perlites, and kaolinite. In the DSC experiments, addition of antifogging-agent and clay decreased the heat of fusion and the heat of pyrolysis reaction. Bentonite decreased 20% of the heat of fusion and 25% of the heat of pyrolysis reaction. In the batch system experiments, the mixing of clay retarded the initial producing rate of fuel oil, but increased the yield of fuel oil. Addition of bentonite increased the yield of fuel oil from LDPE resin. Mixing of antifogging-agent and longevity-agent produced the fuel oil having lower carbon number. The amounts of the carbon number below 12 in fuel oil decreased with adding the clay. That below 23 in fuel oil increased with mixing of bentonite, perlite, kaolinite, and activated clay. But the mixing of diatomaceous earth did not affect the carbon contents of fuel oil from pure LDPE resin. In the silica-alumina type inorganic material used in this experiments, bentonite was the most effective from the pyrolysis heat, yields, and the characteristics of fuel oil.

  • Multi-residential housing in Korea has many problems basically because maintenance, management, and remodelling have been done without considering building elapse and residents' needs. Residential open building has been suggested as one of the solutions. Even though the techniques have been actively developed for residential open building in Japan and the Netherlands, some obstacles are still existing. Especially in Korea, due to the lack of studies for facilitating residential open building, the development and popularization of residential open building are delayed. With the concern that the facilitation of process and systems is as important as technical development, the evaluation of process and systems is needed for promoting residential open building. As result, strong investigation of current situation can offer basic foundation to facilitate residential open building. The purpose of this study is to propose plans to facilitate residential open building in Korea through a comparative study between Korean and Japanese system.

  • Edible insects are reported to be rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, and much attention has been paid to them as a future food source. In Korea, they were massively reared and sold. In order to enhance the market value of edible insects for industrialized mass production, it is important to develop the safe and nutritious feed sources for rearing them are needed. In this study, a chlorella-free control feed (Exp1) and six experimental feeds supplemented with 0.5~2.0% liquid or powder types of chlorella were formulated. Protaetia brevitarsis and Allomyrina dichotoma, registered as food ingredients in Korea, were fed with the designed feeds and parameters of growth including larval survivorship, larval body weight, and larval period were analyzed. When chlorella added, larval survivorship was increased 2~13%(p>0.05) and 9~22%(p<0.05) in each beetle compared to the control. Interestingly, the larval period of chlorella powder-added groups was shortened by 24 days (Exp3, p<0.05) in P. brevitarsis and 19 days (Exp4, p<0.01) in A. dichotoma. Meanwhile, some parameters, crude protein, crude fiber, copper, zinc, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorous, in chlorella-added groups of P. brevitarsis were also higher than the control group. Therefore, chlorella could promote the larval growth performance of these two beetles and be used as a feed additive in rearing them.
