This study aims to increase understanding of current status and changes of academic libraries in South Korea in comparison with those of academic libraries in North America and United Kingdom (UK). The five-year statistics of academic libraries were collected from Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL), and the authors compared the statistical indicators that are comparable to each other. The circumstance and performance of academic libraries in North America were much better than those of South Korea. In addition, the area of library buildings in South Korea was larger than those in UK, and they also had more books and carrels than UK libraries; however, UK libraries had more library staffs, expenditure on material purchase, and interlibrary loan requests. These findings imply that there should be more support on academic libraries in South Korea to increase library staffs and budget, which will invigorate library services and use.

Since the recent financial crisis in universities has caused the decrease of academic library budget, the resource sharing has been considered by utilizing inter-library loan (ILL) data for solving the financial deficit. This study aims to identify the collection profiles of western monographs' ILL data among 4-year academic libraries. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, this study analyzes ILL data from 2011 to 2017 using the bibliographic data and ILL transactions of the KERIS union catalog. The findings of the study show that the western monographs was significantly provided by large-scale academic libraries in 2011, however, the extent of major regions expanded, and the number of influential institutions rose in 2016. Second, in 2012, the influence in the ILL network increased in the quantity of western monographs holdings and the proportion of common collections. On the other hand, in 2016, it was also shown that the influence in terms of provision in the ILL network increased in the proportion of unique collections. Lastly, the ILL participating academic libraries were classified into six clusters by a hierarchical clustering analysis of holdings and ILL indexes.

This paper strives to illustrate the selection processes in public libraries. It specifically attempts to survey the budget allocation, collection development policy, usage of selection criteria, and priority of selection decision in collection development units in public libraries. Staff structure, committee activities, methods of selection, usage of selection tools and librarians' recognitions about selection process are also investigated. Data are drawn from a survey with 315 public libraries in the country. Specific statistics to be analyzed via literature, although not detailed in nature, are scrutinized as well. As a conclusion, the paper discusses such an issue as current situation in selection of materials public libraries and possible impetus toward a better collection development process.

This study attempts to assess university library organizational effectiveness and to develop an instrument to measure the construct. Major findings of the study are as follows. First, organizational effectiveness criteria can be reduced to fifteen factors. Second, four distinct clusters of libraries are identified, each showing a unique effectiveness profile. Third, there are significant differences in dimensions of organizational effectiveness according to the number of users, full-time staff, unit and position to which respondents belong. The investigation shows that organizational effectiveness of university libraries is, indeed, a multidimensional construct, implying that no single measure of effectiveness Is sufficient to describe an organization.

CD-ROM을 이용하여 전문도서관의 정기간행물을 평가할 목적으로 Current Contents : Life Science의 44개 SDI 검색결과와 Biotechnology 및 Biochemistry ＆ Biophysics Citation Index 에서 생명공학연구소 논문 151편의 참고문헌을 대상으로 자관 소장자료와 비소장자료로 구분하여 순위표를 만들었다. 이 순위표를 가지고 정기간행물의 자관 소장확률, 예산 증감시 정기간행물의 신규구독 및 구독중단 우선순위, 두 CD-ROM의 공통 소장/비소장 정기간행물을 조사하였다. 연구결과 생명공학연구소에 유용한 생산적인 비소장 정기간행물과 비생산적인 소장 정기간행물을 식별할 수 있었다. 이 자료는 예산 증감시 정기간행물 구입정책에 반영하면 새로운 장서구성 정책의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다.

이 연구는 국내 독도도서관의 운영현황을 분석하기 위해 국회도서관 독도자료실, 동북아 역사자료실, 세종대학교 독도종합연구소, KMI 독도 해양영토연구센터, KIOST 해양과학도서관 5개 기관을 대상으로 담당자 심층인터뷰를 실시하였다. 분석결과 독도자료실(코너)로 운영되고 있는 곳은 단 2곳이며, 대부분 1인의 사서가 운영하고 있다. 또한 자료수집은 비정기적인 기증과 구입에 의존하고 있고 성문화된 장서개발정책은 부재하였다. 독도자료실의 운영활성화를 위한 방안으로 자료확충을 위한 국가정책지원, 독도자료 통합포털시스템 구축, 독도유관기관간 협력 네트워크 구축을 제안하였다.

This study is to set up a formula of the staff size for university libraries in Korea. The methodology of this study applied the multiple regression analysis and the component ratio of professional staff versus nonprofessional staff. The results of this study are swrunarized as follows: (1) Number of librarians = 3.016 + 0.0l6xholdings(unit : 1000 vols) - 0.008volumesadded(unit : 100 vols) + 0.031 x graduate enrollments(unit : 10 persons) + 0.069 x undergraduate enrollments(unit : 100 persons) + 0.043 x library materials expenditure(unite: 10 million won). The local bookstore direct loan service for users' requests in public libraries, which was launched in Gyeonggi Province, is a creative new service that has led to the revitalization of the local economy through the rise in sales of local bookstores and high user satisfaction. However, it is a service in which positive and negative reactions coexist as negative opinions are presented on the deterioration of the quality of public library books due to overlapping needs for desired books by users. Therefore, several ways of improving for local bookstore loan service in public libraries through a survey of public libraries, local bookstores, and users were suggested in this study. The local bookstore direct loan service for users' requests, which is a creative cooperation plan between public libraries and local bookstores, needs to constantly improve its services by increasing book purchase cost, organizing a steering committee for continuous communication and collecting plans through research on the book purchase cost. Also, it is necessary to improve its services by enacting regulations expanding reading culture services expanding the number of healthy users and fostering various local bookstores.

Academic libraries in Korea have had more and more troubles in management due to the drastic increase in quantities and budgets for purchasing expensive international academic information resources. In this research, with a focus on the international electronic information resources, an attempt is made to overcome such difficulties in management of academic libraries in the following steps: First, the amount of budgets for purchasing resources and building collections for academic libraries is analyzed; Second, the current state of academic library consortia, both domestic and foreign, is reviewed; Third, the current administrative issues and strategic directions of domestic academic library consortia, including the KESLI Consortium of KISTI, ACE Consortium of KERIS, and Consortium of Korean Council for University Educations, are examined; and Fourth, based on the above collected information, a proposal is made to improve the collection and distribution system for international academic information resources in Korea.

This study presented basic data to be collected by the National Library for the Disabled in preparation for the construction of an independent library building and expansion of its scope. Due to legal and practical limitations, the National Library for the Disabled must invest annual budget to collect materials for the disabled and focus on purchasing them. In addition, it is necessary to establish a strategy for comprehensive collection of educational and academic resources, as well as retrospective materials. Accordingly, this study conducted basic research to comprehensively collect resources on the disabled based on the current collection development policy of the National Library for the Disabled. Ten institutions were selected for investigation, and trends in the publication and collection of materials related to disabled people and disability-related data were analyzed based on the data obtained from those institutions. The basic collection catalog presented can serve as foundational data to determine the resources to be collected by the National Library for the Disabled in the future.
