  • A long-term trend analysis of cold water masses along eastern coast of South Korea was performed during summer, based on wind speed, wind direction, and sea surface temperature (SST) data. Wind data collected over a 22-year period (1997-2011) were compared with another set of data collected over the successive 7-year (2012-2018), highlighting a general decrease in the frequency and speed of south winds. However, both the frequency and speed of these winds have been higher in June between 2012-2018, rather than between 1997-2011. The cold water season between July and August was faster during the 7-year period; moreover, the SSTs registered around Gangneung (EN) rose by $0.5^{\circ}C- 1.8^{\circ}C$, while those around Yeongdeok (EC) and Gijang (ES) increased by only $0.1^{\circ}C-0.3^{\circ}C$. The number of cold water days during the 7-year period, compared to those recorded during previous years (1990-2011, satellite SST data by NOAA/AVHRR), decreased in the proximity of Yeongdeok and Gijang, but increased in the proximity of Kangneung. Additionally, the number of cold water days around Kangneung, Yeongdeok, and Gijang increased in June highlighting a geographical and temporal change in the occurrence of cold waters. These observation can be explained by variations in the pressure distribution that should have weakened the East Asian monsoon, affecting the direction and speed of winds that regulate the flow of cold waters.

  • The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), driven by high density water sinking around Greenland serves as a global climate regulator, because it transports heat and materials in the climate system. We analyzed the mechanism of AMOC on a decadal time scale simulated with the HadGEM2-AO model. The lead-lag regression analysis with AMOC index shows that the decadal variability of the thermohaline circulation in the Atlantic Ocean can be considered as a self-sustained variability. This means that the long-term change of AMOC is related to the instability which is originated from the phase difference between the meridional temperature gradient and the ocean circulation. When the overturning circulation becomes stronger, the heat moves northward and decreases the horizontal temperature-dominated density gradients. Subsequently, this leads to weakening of the circulation, which in turn generates the anomalous cooling at high latitudes and, thereby strengthening the AMOC. In this mechanism, the density anomalies at high latitudes are controlled by the thermal advection from low latitudes, meaning that the variation of the AMOC is thermally driven and not salinity driven.

  • Long-term trends and distribution patterns of water quality were investigated in the Mokpo coastal areas of the Yellow Sea, Korea from 1979 to 2009. Water samples were collected at 5 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, suspended solids (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO) and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns of temperature, pH and DO were not clear among stations but the seasonal variations were distinct except ammonium. The trend analysis by principal component analysis (PCA) during 30 years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area. Spatial water qualities were discriminated into 3 clusters by PCA; station cluster 1, 2~4, and 5. Annual water qualities were clearly discriminated into 4 surface water clusters and 2 bottom water clusters by PCA. By this multi-variate analysis, the annual trends were summarized as the followings; water temperature, pH and COD tended to increase from late 1980's, salinity to decrease, phosphate to increase from 1994 and dissolved inorganic nitrogen to increase, due to the input of fresh water same as shown in Kyoungin coastal area, Asan coastal area, Choensoo bay and Gunsan coastal area.

  • Long-term trends and distribution patterns of water quality were investigated in the Yeoja Bay of South Sea, Korea from 1976 to 2010. Water samples were collected at 3 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, hydrogen ion concentration (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS) and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns of temperature, pH and DO were not clear among stations but the seasonal variations were distinct except ammonium. The trend analysis by principal component analysis (PCA) during 31 years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area. Spatial water qualities were discriminated into 2 clusters by PCA; station cluster 1 and 2~3. Annual water qualities were clearly discriminated into 4 clusters by PCA. By this multi-variate analysis, the annual trends were summarized as the followings; water temperature, COD and SS tended to increase from late 1970's, decreased salinity, and increased phosphate from 1991 to 2001 and increased dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Water quality was showed by the input of fresh water same as those of Kyoungin coastal area, Asan coastal area, Choensoo bay, Gunsan coastal and Mokpo coastal area in the Yeoja Bay.

  • This study has examined the water quality environment of six areas in the mid-southern coastal waters of Korea in order to find the significance between water quality and algal blooms of the area, based on the last 17 years of data offered by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. Water temperature in these areas fluctuated with a three to five year of period, and revealed little yearly variations at the surface layer while slowly decreasing at the bottom layer. On the other hand, salinity tended to increase both the surface and bottom layers. Algal blooms had a tendency to decrease in their outbreaks and causative species, with a peak of the middle of 1990s. C. polykrikoides prevailed in the entire areas, and in particular, almost annually appeared in Goheung coastal area since 1995. C. polykrikoides blooms occurred when a mean water temperature was approximately $26^{\circ}C$, and salinities were between 31.00 and 31.50 but exceptionally 28.68 in Yeosu Coast. However, the concentrations of DIN, DIP, TN, TP, including DO, turned out not to be such significant factors for the outbreaks of C. polykrikoides blooms. Therefore, water temperature was judged as the most controlling factor for the outbreak of C. polykrikoides blooms.

  • In thi study, we unveil the intricate interplay among picophytoplankton (0.2-2 ㎛) communities, warming surface water temperatures, and major inorganic nutrients within the southwestern East Sea from 2003-2022. The observed surface temperature rise, reflecting global climate trends, defies conventional seasonal patterns in temperate seas, with highest temperatures in summer and lowest in spring. Concurrently, concentrations of major dissolved inorganic nutrient display distinct seasonality, with peaks in winter and gradually declining thereafter during spring. The time course of chlorophyll-a concentrations, a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, reveals a typical bimodal pattern for temperate seas. Notably, contributions from picophytoplankton exhibited a steady annual increase of approximately 0.5% over the study period, although the total chlorophyll-a concentrations declined slightly. The strong correlations between picophytoplankton contributions and inorganic nutrient concentrations is noteworthy, highlighting their competitively advantageous responsiveness to the shifting nutrient regime. These findings reflect significant ecological implications for the scientific insights into the marine ecosystem responses to changing climate conditions.

  • To study characteristics of the water quality in the Hansan-Geoje bay, we analyzed the long term monitoring data collected at the two sites during the period of 1987~2010. The trophic state of the waters in Hansan-Geoje bay was the mesotrophic level by the classification of Wasmud et al.[2001]. The water nutrients increased steadily from a wet season (Aug.), it reached the maximum concentration peak in a dry season (Nov.), and then decreased steadily to the winter, it reached at the minimum value in May in the next year. The result of factor analysis divided the waters of Hansan-Geoje bay into the five factors (nutrient, season, inflow land water, pollution, internal production) and the factors represented the 76.82% on the status of the waters. According to time series analysis, temperature, DO and bottom DIP were increased, and pH and COD were decreased during the period of 1987~2010. In particular, the fluctuation trend of DIN has been turned from oversupply to shortage by the N/P ratio since before and after 1990's. The water quality of the Hansan-Geoje bay has been recovered except DIP since 1987, despite of its geographical characteristic which is a general semi-closesd bay and a massive aqua-culture ground. To preserve the waters in Hansan-Geoje bay, we need to know on the cause of the increase or accumulation of DIP, and we should continue to study on the interrelation between the aqua-culture and water environment.

  • Objective of this study was to examine the effects of grouts and temperature change on microorganisms in geothermal heat pump. Groundwater samples were obtained from wells in the heat pump system during installation (Oriental medicine hospital) and in the heat pump system under operation (Business incubation center). Grouts are the volclay sodium bentonite. Real-time PCR was used to evaluate total bacterial number and 16S rDNA. The results showed that total bacterial number of groundwater in the heat pump operation was greater than that of non-operation case, which indicates a temperature effect on the bacterial culture. In addition, high concentration of grout showed an elevated bacteria number. In the mean time, a long-term field monitoring is essentially required to confirm the effects of the grouts and the temperature changes.

  • This study developed synthetic regression diagram for analyzing the linear trend of sea surface height, temperature, and salinity around the Korean marginal seas. In situ observed data had been quality controlled and they were verified by EOF comparison with objective analyzed data. From the synthetic regression diagram, we confirmed similar linear regression values with those of previous studies, but additionally provided detailed regression rate of each 5 to 30 year for the total periods of 1983-2013. We expect that quantitative results presented by this study will be useful as standard reference numbers for relevant studies analyzing oceanic long-term trend.
