  • This study aims to clarify the effect of forest management practices(thinning and pruning) on water quality to get the fundamental information on the facility of cleansing water quality after forest operation. Rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis in Kwangnung Experimental Forest for 6 months from May 4, to November 1, 1999. Average tree height in the management sites increased by 0.5m more than that in the non-management sites in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis, respectively. Increment of average D.B.H. at the management sites grew 3.5cm and 2.6cm more in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis compared with that at non-management sites. Average pH of the total amount for the event in throughfall and stemflow was higher than that of throughfall and stemflow of the beginning of the event at the management and non-management sites. Average electrical conductivity of throughfall and stemflow at the beginning of the event was higher than that of the total amount for the event at management and non-management sites. Water qualities of throughfall and stemflow were buffered more by the management practice in both. The forest management may affect purification of water quality of throughfall and stemflow in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis.

  • The throughfall, stemflow and precipitation interception during the period of May to November 1995 were compared between three stands of Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and Quercus species stand growing at Kwangju-Gun, Kyunggi-Do. The total amount of precipitation during the period in the study area was 1,821mm, higher than average precipitation. The amount of interception showed 21.8% of the total precipitation in Quercus stand, whereas 15.7 and 19.4 in P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis stands, respectively. Precipitation leached on forest floor was occupied mainly by throughfall for all the stands, and it was specially higher in P. koraiensis stand. The amount of stemflow was appeared higher in Quercus stand(5.0%) than P. koraiensis stand(1.1%) or L. leptolepis stand(1.1%). The relationship between throughfall or stemflow and total precipitation in all the stands were highly significant.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of tree density of Pinus koraiensis forest on the thermal comfort and the physiological response of human body in summer season. As the indicators of thermal comfort were used the predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD), while the heart rate variability was used for the physiological indicator of subjects. The subjects were 15 physically healthy men and women in their 20s ($23.7{\pm}1.7$ years old). The subjects sat in each site to measure HRV for 5 minutes and the thermal comfort of each site was measured. As a results, it was proven by PMV and PPD that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density was thermally more comfortable than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density. In case of the subjects' physiological response, the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density showed significantly higher HF of HRV than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density and significantly lower LF/HF. Therefore, the findings of this study scientifically proved that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density is thermally more comfortable and physiologically more relaxing than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density.

  • This study was supposed to offer vegetation plans for functional improvement of the recreational forest by researching Mt. Chukryong which is located at Oebang-li Sudong-Myon Namyangju Kyong-gi Province in Korea. In this study, artificial vegetation and natural vegetation near trails in recreational forest were researched through biodiversity analysis. From this analysis process, a typical management improvement of the biodiversity functions were examined by reviewing functions biotope condition, vegetation structure and wild bird community condition. Typical vegetation system was divided into four detail parts: Managed artificial Pinus koraiensis forest, Not managed artificial Pinus koraiensis forest, Natural deciduous forest and Not managed deciduous forest. As a result of the vegetation structure, the numerical value of the deciduous forest species diversity was higher than that of artificial Pinus koraiensis, and the numerical value of the managed condition was higher than that of not managed condition. As a result of a habitat structure analysis of the wild bird community, managed Pinus koraiensis forests were inadequate structure for wild birds to habit in there because the forests had weak structure layers, but unmanaged deciduous forest and unmanaged Pinus koraiensis that had diverse layers was proper places for birds to in habit. Thus, based on the functional analysis of biodiversity, management patterns of the target area were concluded in two manners: conserving management and restoring management. Deciduous forest protection target areas included natural deciduous forest area and managed deciduous forest area, ecological restoration target area included unmanaged artificial Pinus koraiensis area and restoring management target area includes managed artificial Pinus koraiensis.

  • This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of forest management practices on pH and electrical conductivity to get fundamental information on water purification capacity after forest operation. Rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis in Gwangreung Experimental Forest for S months from May to November 1999. Mean pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event was higher in management (thinning and pruning) sites of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis stands than nonmanagement site of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis stands. In addition, pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event showed similar trends which are higher pH in the management sites compared with the non- management sites. This result indicates that managements such as thinning and pruning improve tree butler capacity of rainfall pH. According to the linear regression results, pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.735${\times}$pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+1.849 ($R^2\;=\;0.82$) and pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in management sites= 0.863${\times}$pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in management sites +1.0242 ($R^2\;=\;0.87$). In case of stemflow pH, pH of the sternflow of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.53${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in non- management sites+2.7709 ($R^2\;=\;0.64$) and pH of the stemflow of the total amount of the event in management sites = 0.5854${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in management sites+2.7045 ($R^2\;=\;0.65$). Electrical conductivity (EC) of the throughfall of the beginning and total amount of the event was highest in non- management site in Abies holophylla, followed by management sites in fsies Abies holophylla, non-management site in Pinus koraiensis, and management sites in Pinus koraiensis stands, respectively. According to the linear regression results, EC of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in non-managementsites = 0.4045${\times}$EC of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+26.766 ($R^2\;=\;0.69$) and EC of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in management sites = 0.6002${\times}$EC of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in management sites+8.0184 ($R^2\;=\;0.54$). In case of stemflow EC, EC of thestemflow of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.6298${\times}$EC of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+11.582 ($R^2\;=\;0.72$) and pH of the stemflow of the total amount of the event in management sites =0.602${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in management sites+20.783($R^2\;=\;0.49$).

  • This study was conducted to obtain the fundamental data for the ecological management in the Pinus koraiensis natural forest in Seoraksan National Park. The community types of the P. koraiensis forest were divided into Ainsliaea acerifolia group and Rhododendron schlippenbachii group. A. acerifolia group was subdivided into Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes subgroup and Calamagrostis arundinacea subgroup. The importance value of major species showed higher value in the order like Pinus koraienses, Abies nephrolepis, Acer barbinerve, Betula ermani, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Sorbus commixta and Quercus mongolica. The value of species diversify ranged from 0.44 to 0.86, and showed stronger competition in the interspecific association than in the intraspecific one. The number of individuals of P. koraiensis below 10 centimeters in the 15 study sites was 35, and it was considered that the population of P. koraiensis could be succeeded to the other species in the present situation because of lower frequency in the low layer though the canopy of tree layer was dominated with P. koraiensis. The radial growth patterns of P. koraiensis individuals were mainly fluctuated for the entire life time, which was considered to be caused by frequent disturbance.
