  • In this paper a design formula has been proposed to predict the residual strength of damaged tubulars subjected to combined axial copression, hydrostatic pressure and end bending loadings. A theoretical analysis method was employed to calculate the residual strengths, in which the geometric configuration of damaged tubulars is realistically described using empirically derived equations. The predictions using this method have been compared with relevent experimental results to demonstrate their validity and accuracy. A rigorous parametric study has been conducted using the method, and then a design formula has been derived based upon the parametric study results.

  • The hygrothermal effect on three different types of Glass/Polypropylene was investigated under the environment of 4$0^{\circ}C$ distilled water. The residual strength of Glass/Polypropylene with randomly oriented and fiber content of 4-wt%(R40) was found stable under the moisture content of 0.2%. In this case, the maximum moisture content was 0.53%. On the other hand, Glass/Polypropylene with unidirection and 42wt%(U42) and 50st%(U50) fiber content, respectively, showed the residual strength less stable than R40. However, the maximam moisture contents were 0.52% and 0.45% respectively.

  • 본 연구에서는 SiC 및 SiC-TiB$_{2}$복합재료의 마모 및 마모천이기구를 비교 실험한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 두 재료의 마모천이현상은 각각의 하중이 200N(SiC)과 80N(SiC-TiB$_{2}$)이상에서 나타나게 되었다.

  • The compressive tests under impact conditions were performed to establish a design guide for impact damage tolerance. The composition of layup was selected for the real cases of composite aircraft structure. The energy level of visible of visible damage threshold was determined as 7 Joules. It was found that the normalized bending stiffnesses in the direction of closely fixed boundary affected the area of damage. Graphite/epoxy used in the tests exhibited 60% reduction in compression strength at the energy level of visible damage threshold. Wet-conditioned specimens represented 9% reduction in residual compressive strength in comparison with room temperature ambient specimens. In this study, a design factor of 2.1 was proposed for the low velocity impact damage.

  • Ring-stiffened cylinders are widely used as the pressure hull of submarines and underwater vehicles. For large ring-stiffened cylinders cylindrical shells are fbricated by cold rolling of flat plates and then welding of curved shells. After forming cylinders ring-stiffeners are welded on th the cylinders. Due to these cold roiling and welding initial shape imperfections and residual stresses exists in fabricated ring-stiffened cylinders. It is well known that the initial shape and material imperfections affect the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders significantly. In this paper previous researches on the effects of initial shape imperfections and residual stresses are briefly reviewed Recently a numerical analysis computer program was developed to predict the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure, which is based on the Dynamic Relaxation technique. This program was employed to numerically investigate those effects. The numerical predictions were substantiated with relevant experimental results.

  • Suspension part should have enough endurance during its lifetime to protect passenger. Therefore, the coil spring is one of the major suspension part of an automobile. Corrosion fatigue strength of the coil spring depends on many factors including mechanical and environmental properties. In this paper, residual stresses by shot peening was analyzed using finite element analysis and evaluated its effect on corrosion fatigue strength.

  • This study is to investigate experimentally relationships between the impact energy and moisture absorption characteristies vs.the residual bending strength with the variation of stacking seqences. When Carbon-fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) impact-induced laminates are subjected to the high temperatures and hygrothermal effects, it is found that what CFRP laminates are impacted by a steel ball (5 mm in diametar) ; thus, the generated delamination is observed by the ultrasonic microscope. And the residual bending strength is evaluated by a three-point bending test. Also, a thermostat is used in test with the unimpacted and impacted specimens for the moisture experimentaiton. The percision electro lever scles is used to measure the moisture content(1/10, 000g).

  • The requirements of getting spring steel with higher fatigue strength have been increased to achieve the weight reduction of a vehicle. As the possible increment in fatigue strength by using the conventional shot peening treatment is found to be limited, it is necessary to modify the shot peening treatment. In this study, to investigate the effects of warm shot peening on increasing fatigue strength, tests are conducted on spring steel SAE9524. By the results of rotating bending fatigue tests, the fatigue strength increases up to 23.8% in warm shot peening specimens at $200^{\circ}C$ compared with conventional shot peening. The major reason why the warm shot peening is effective to the improvement of fatigue strength is the increment of the compressive residual stress, which can be effectively formed by shot peening under the condition of warm temperature than room temperature.

  • In this paper, the mechanics of ships in grounding with a forward speed is analyzed. A raking damage estimate model in grounding of ships is proposed. The accuracy and applicability of the model are verified by a comparison of experimental results. The progressive collapse analysis of damaged gull sections under vertical bending moments is described by using the ALPS/ISUM computer code. The procedure is applied to grounding simulation of a double hull tanker with a transverseless system.

  • Instrumented indentation technique is a new way to evaluate nondestructive such mechanical properties as flow properties, residual stress and fracture toughness by analyzing indentation load-depth curves. This study evaluated quantitatively the flow properties of steels and residual stress of weldments. First, flow properties can be evaluated by defining a representative stress and strain from analysis of deformation behavior beneath the rigid spherical indenter and the parameters obtained from instrumented indentation tests. For estimating residual stress, the deviatoric-stress part of the residual stress affects the indentation load-depth curve, so that by analyzing the difference between the residual-stress-induced indentation curve and residual-stress-free curve, the quantitative residual stress of the target region can be evaluated. The algorithm for flow property evaluation was verified by comparison with uniaxial tensile test and the residual stress evaluation model was compared to mechanical cutting and ED-XRD results.
