  • Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L.) is the most popular salad vegetable crop The purpose of this study was to analyze the quality of lettuce, and residual pesticides in this vegetable, during growth after transplanting. The eatable weight was 40% of the total weight at the commencement of transplanting, but had doubted at harvest after transplanting. As lettuce grew after transplanting, the pH, the sugar level, and the moisture content increased slightly, and the color tended towards yellow rather than greenThe SPDA chlorophyll measurement was 16.84 at 42 day post-ransplantation, and increased to 26.44 at 67 day after transplanting. The contents of vitamin C were 2.5mg/100g wet weight at 60 d after transplantation, but decreased to 2.2mg/100g wet weight 67 day post-transplantation. Mineral (Ca, Fe, K, Mg, and Na) levels rose after transplantation, and attained their highest levels 60 day post-transplantation. The lettuce crop was analyzed for residues of each of 48 pesticides nt 54 after transplantation, and the only such chemical detected was chlorthalonil(0.03 0.25mg/kg wet weight).

  • Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is known to be an effective process to remove the contaminants from the soils by enhancing the vaporization of organic compounds using forced vapor flows or applying vacuum through soils. Experiments are carried out to investigate the effects of the organic contaminants, types of soils, and water contents on the removal efficiency with operating time. In the study, simulated soils include the glass bead which has no micropore, sand and molecular sieve which has a large volume of micropores. As model organic pollutants, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, and trichloroethylene are selected. Desorption experiments are conducted by flowing nitrogen gas. Under the experimental conditions, it is found that there are linear relationships between logarithm of removal efficiency and logarithm of number of pore volumes. The number of pore volumes are defined as the total amount of air flow through the soil column divided by the pore volume of soil column. For three organic compounds studied, the removal rate is slow for no water content, while the number of pore volumes for removal of organic compounds are notably reduced for water contents up to 37%. For the removal of dense organic compound, such as trichloroethylene, a large number of pore volumes are needed. Also, the effects of the characteristics of simulated soils on the removal efficiency of organic compounds are studied. After the characterization of soil surface, porosity of soil columns and types of contaminants, the results could provide a basis for the design of SVE process.

  • In the polythylene film mulching(P.E. mulching) culture, soil temperature ranked in the order of clear P.E.-, black P.E.-, and non-mulching. The difference in temperature between P.E mulching and non-mulching conditions was greatest in maximum temperature in fine day. Under the dry season, soil water content ranked in the order of black P.E.-, clear P.E.- and non-mulched soil. Under the rainy season, however, the content in non-mulched soil was higher than in the mulched soils, while there was little difference between the two colored films. In three phases of soil, liquid phase ratio was higher and gaseous phase ratio was lower in mulched soil than in non-mulched soil under the dry season. However, the opposite result was observed under the rainy season. The content of soil organic matter in red pepper field applied with the compost and mixed-fertilizer ranked in the order of black P.E.-, clear P.E.- and non-mulching conditions. However, the content between mulching and non-mulching differed little in peanut field applied with mixed-fertilizer. In red pepper field, soil nitrogen content in mulching conditions slightly differed from that in non-mulching conditions during the dry season. The soil nitrogen content decreased rapidly 86 days after fertilizer application during the rainy season. In peanut field, there was little difference in the content between the two conditions. The nitrogen content in the leaves of red pepper and peanut was much higher in P.E mulching than in non-mulching.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate changes in concentration of pesticide residues in Chinese matrimony vine and jujube during drying. Test pesticides, triadimefon and triforine for chinese matrimony vine and methoxyfenozide and thiacloprid for jujube, which are commonly used for the crops in Korea, were treated to the crops by spraying and dipping. The pesticide residues in both fresh and dried Chinese matrimony vine and jujube were analyzed by using a GLC-ECD and an HPLC-DAD. Processing factors of the pesticides in Chinese matrimony vine and jujube by drying ranged from 1.41 to 2.28 and from 1.50 to 4.20, respectively. And reduction factors of the pesticides in the crops ranged from 0.29 to 0.47 and from 0.68 to 0.98, respectively. These results indicate that concentrations of the pesticides in the test crops increased after drying, while amounts of pesticides in them were diminished by drying.

  • This study was performed to develop high-value-added biomaterials for health and beauty products. Extracts of ethanol and hot water and their subsequent organic solvent fractions were prepared from Lees of Wookukseng (LW), a commercialized Korean traditional rice wine. We investigated their activities on blood coagulation, platelet aggregation, hemolysis against human red blood cells (hRBCs), and anti-oxidation. The water content, pH and brix of the LW were 80.3%, 3.94 and 13.0°, respectively. The yield of ethanol extraction (6.62%) was 3.15 times higher than that of hot-water extraction (2.1%), and the ethyacetate fraction (EAF) of ethanol extract showed the highest content of total polyphenol (128 mg/g) among the various fractions. In anticoagulation activity assay, the EAF of ethanol extract showed a 15-fold extension in TT, PT, and aPTT, indicating that the EAFs contain various inhibitory substances against thrombin, prothrombin and coagulation factors. In anti-platelet aggregation activity assay, the butanol fraction and water residue of ethanol extract showed significant inhibition activity. The activities were comparable to aspirin, a commercial anti-thrombosis agent. The above extracts and fractions did not show hemolysis activity against hRBC up to 5 mg/ml, and had radical scavenging activity against DPPH anion, ABTS cation and nitrite. Our results suggest that the active fractions prepared from LW, which has no specific usage until now, have a high potential as novel resources for anti-thrombosis agents.

  • Residue of herbicide napropamide [N,N-dimethyl-2-(1-napthoxy)-propionamide] and change of micro-organism were investigated in upland soil under different environmental conditions. Half-lives of degradation were 28.3 days in the sterile soil and 14.6 days in the nonsterile soil, respectively. These results suggest that microorganism remarkably affected the decomposition of napropamide. Napropamide was rapidly degraded in order of 60% > 80% ${\geq}$ 40% soil moisture content of field water-holding capacity. Numbers of bacteria and total microbes in 60% moisture content was more than those in 40% moisture content. The more the napropamide degradation was rapid in lower soil pH. The total number of microorganism increased by lapse of time after treatment of napropamide at pH 5.5. The decomposition rate of napropamide was rapid in the order of $27^{\circ}C$ > $37^{\circ}C$ > $17^{\circ}C$. At $17^{\circ}C$ of soil temperature actinomycetes in napropamide treatment plot was more than these in nontreatment plot and also at $27^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$ bacteria in napropamide treatment plot was more than those in nontreatment plot. Napropamide degradation was more rapid and number of microorganism was more abundant at the concentration of 10ppm than at that of 20ppm. The half-life of napropamide was longer in the clay loam soil than in the silty loam soil. The half times in laboratory test than in upland field. Numbers of microbes in the experiment under all the test environmental condition was not significantly different between treatment and nontreatment of napropamide.

  • This study analyzed the physicochemical properties and combustion characteristics of dry food waste to evaluate the possibility of using food waste as a solid refuse fuel (SRF). The characteristics of dry food waste as a fuel were analyzed by comparing the difference in properties with SRF, and the combustion characteristics after conversion into fuel were identified. Ultimate analysis, proximate analysis, calorific value analysis, and TGA analysis were conducted using two types of food waste and two types of SRF, and the following results were obtained. The moisture content and ash content of dry food waste were 1.7~10.0 wt.% and 7.8~11.7 wt.%, respectively, which satisfied the quality standards for SRF. The low calorific value of dry food waste was 4,000 ~ 4,720 kcal/kg, which was higher than the quality standard of 3,500 kcal/kg for SRF. As a result of TGA analysis of dry food waste, the combustion reaction started at about 200 ℃ and the highest burning rate was at about 500 ℃. After moisture evaporation between 100 and 200 ℃, initial volatile matter, carbon and residual volatile matter were released and burned between 200 and 500 ℃. Based on the high calorific value and low moisture and ash content of dry food waste, it is considered that it is possible to convert dry food waste into SRF through the application of efficient drying technology and strict quality standard inspection in the future.

  • The preventive effect of Lentinus edodes extract (LE) against constipation was studied in rats. Rats were pretreated with LE contained in drinking water at the concentration of 10%, 20% and 40% over 30 days. Constipation was induced by subcutaneous injection of loperamide (4 mg/kg/day) 3 days prior to sacrifice. Treatment of loperamide resulted in decreases in the number and wet weight of fecal pellets, and increase in the number of fecal pellet in the distal colon and cecocolon weight. In contrast, the number and wet weight of fecal pellets were increased, and the number of fecal pellet in the distal colon and the cecocolon weight were decreased in LE-pretreated groups compared to the loperamide-treated group. Blood parameters such as white blood cell, red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and serum alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities, and blood urea nitrogen and creatinine values were not significantly different between the groups. In addition, LE (0.5 mg/mL) increased spontaneous contractile activity, which was reduced by atropine or loperamide in isolated rat ileum. Theses results suggest that the improvement of constipation symptoms in LE-pretreated rats resulted from a stimulatory effect of LE on intestine contractile activity.
