Classification of Vocabulary for Evaluation on Machine Noise at High Noisy Workshop (고소음 작업장 기계소음 평가를 위한 어휘의 유형화)

  • After the Industrialization of 1960s, while it has greatly contributed to the industrial development owing to acceleration of mechanization, but it is real situation that the countermeasure to noise damage generating at the loud noise workshop is scarcely made. Especially, the machine noise made at factory and workplace is so shocking and repeatedly reiterating terrible noise that most of the spot workers are forcedly imposing such dangers as the severe unpleasant feeling and hearing impairments. On such point of view, this research has attempted to extract the proper rating vocabulary in order for evaluation on machine noise made at the high noisy workshop, therefore it is considering that those extracted vocabularies could be utilized as the useful psycho-acoustic experiment for evaluation on machine noise, also for establishment of regulation standard in domestic high noisy workshop.

THE ASSESSMENT OF NOISE IN THE PEDIATRIC DENTAL CLINICS (소아치과 진료실에서 발생하는 소음 평가)

  • Dental professionals are exposed to various occupational risks, among which the problem of hearing damage has been newly revealed. There have been some researches reporting that noise occurring in a dental office exceeds the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) Standards. Especially, the pediatric dentists are repeatedly exposed to an additional noise source called the crying sound of children in addition to all kinds of noises from dental instruments. Accordingly, this study intended to investigate the noise environment likely to affect pediatric dentists and to examine the possibility of resultant hearing damages. The level of noise was measured respectively, when various dental instruments (ultrasonic scaler, high-speed handpiece, low-speed handpiece) are operated, when children are crying, and when both occasions take place simultaneously (from the distance of 30 cm) with a portable noise meter. And the daily duration of pediatric dentists exposed to the noise environment was surveyed. The results were compared with the standard value of noise threshold of NIOSH, OSHA, and that of hearing damage of CRA News letter respectively. Considering the intensity and exposure time, the noise environment of pediatric dentists exceeds the allowable noise threshold values. Even only one exposure to crying child was likely to lead to permanent hearing damage. Comparatively, pediatric dentists have a higher risk for occupational hearing damages, and some active measures are thought highly desirable to minimize it.

  • Noise radiated from medical treatment at dental clinic will affect the patients. On such point of view, We investigated the noise characteristics in case of medical treatment (scaling, tooth eliminating) and non-medical examination (idling) and also evaluated the degree of indoor noise using the evaluation index such as PSIL, NRN and made up a questionnaire about the reactions to noise. As a result of noise evaluation, it shows that the range of noise level is 67.7~78.3 dB(A) and frequency is very high (above 4 k Hz) and respondents are affected by noise (unpleasantness, hesitation to visit dental clinic, shivering with noise, being astonishment). Analysis by PSIL showed that it was no problem to conversation between worker and patient. But it exceeded the noise permit level in working space by NR-curve. To relieve a fear of noise in patients, they are considered to offer the ear protection, choose the low noisevibration equipment and use the masking effect. They are of great advantage to dental clinics to i prove dental service and competitiveness.

개인 휴대용 카세트 소음에 의한 난청가능성에 대한 평가

  • 작업장 뿐만 아니라 일상생활에서도 결코 무시될 수 없는 것이 레져활동으로 인한 소음이다. 최근 급격히 늘어가는 개인 휴대용 카세트(Personal Cassette Players: PCP)사용은 심각한 소음성난청 발생이 우려된다. 본 연구는 PCP사용에 관련된 여러 인자들이 청력손실과 어떻게 얼마나 관련이 있는가를 파악 하고 PCP를 일정시간 사용했을 때 오는 청력 손실을 정량적으로 파악, 분석하는데 근본 목적을 둔다. 정상 청력을 가진 피실험자 18명의 대학생들을 대상으로 정상 청취조건 그리고 배경소음(지하철)에 노출 중과 후의 사용환경과 소음원으로 Hard Music, Soft Music 및 Language/News를 고려하여 평균소음도와 최고 소음도를 측정하였다. 또한 현실적 상황을 고려한 2시간 정도의 PCP의 청취 전과 후의 청력변화를 측정하였다. 통계 분석 결과, 사용환경과 소음원에 대해 휴대용 카세트 청취 소음수준이 유의한 차이가 있었으며, 특히 Hard Music 청취시에는 95dB, 그리고 지하철 소음하에서는 92dB의 높은 (위험한) 청취수 준을 보였다. 최고소음수준의 경우 NIOSH기준을 초과하는 117dB 정도의 매우 위험한 수준까지 나타났다. 또한 2 시간 정도의 PCP소음에 노출 전 후의 청력손실이 주파수 대역에 걸쳐 유의하게 나타났으며, 특히, 가장 민감한 주파수 대역인 4000Hz에서 최고 7dB 정도의 청력 손실이 발생하였다. 본 연구 결과에 따라, PCP사용에 대한 청력보호대책안을 제시하고자 한다.

The Noise Characteristics and Appropriate Talk Distance in Dental Clinic (치과병원의 소음특성과 적절한 대화거리)

  • Noise occurred when medical treatment in dental clinic will affect the patients. This study was measured the noise level and frequency in case of medical examination and also has evaluated the degree of indoor noise using the NR-curve, NRN and a distance to conversation between worker and patients using the PSIL. It shows that noise level was 69.3~81.5dB(A) and frequency was very high (more than 4K(Hz)) and analysis by NR-curve showed that it was exceed the noise permit level and distance to conversation was less than 1meter by PSIL. To remedy a fear of noise in patients and provide a conversational satisfaction, it's considered that choosing the low noise-vib. equipment, using the masking effect and set the room to explain. So It is possible to improve their competitiveness.

  • In this paper, we proposed of the results of the noise level and appropriate conversation distance by applying the noise characteristics generated during treatment at a dental clinic to the NR-curve and PSIL. As a result of analyzing the noise characteristics during treatment at a dental clinic, it was analyzed that the noise level exceeded 60dB(A), which is the health preservation limit value caused by noise, and the noise level increased as the frequency increased. the result of evaluation applying it to the NR curve, some treatment exceeded the workplace noise standard, and as a result of analyzing the level of conversational disturbance between the worker and the patient, it is desirable to have the conversation at a distance of less than 1M for accurate communication. In order to improve the quality of medical service in dental clinic and to reduce dental fear, it is judged that soundproofing protective equipment is provided to workers, and soundproofing measures are needed for noise sources (treatment devices used in treatment) and sound sources (patients and workers).

  • The purposes of this research were to evaluate the relationships of between characteristics of noise and annoyance of dental hygienist by noise in dental clinic. To investigate the dental clinic workers' reactions to noise when occurred in dental clinic, the noise level test in dental clinic and questionnaire were taken. As a result of noise evaluation, It shows that the range of noise level was 67.7~78.3dB(A) and frequency was very high (more than 4KHz). It's seem to be begins occurrence of stamina-loss, contraction of peripheral blood vessel, decrease of adrenocortical hormones. Most of respondents were affected by noise: 67% of respondents were nervous about noise and the rest of respondents were bearable. Analysis by NR-curve showed that it was exceed the noise permit level in working space. As a result of correlation - test, the more exposed dental hygienist to noise, the more felt the unpleasantness and fatigue. It's hard to sufficient explanation to patients about the dental treatment. So it's thoughts that insufficient explanation will negative impact on the patients' satisfaction and increase competitiveness in dental clinics. To remedy a unpleasantness and fatigue of noise in dental hygienist, it's considered that making an offer the ear protection and choosing the low noise-vib. equipment and using the masking effect. Therefore, It can be provide a pleasant working environment with dental hygienist and It will have a great advantage to dental clinics to improve their competitiveness.
