Coating Method and Germination Test of Coated Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) Seeds (담배종자의 피복대형화방법과 발아에 미치는 영향)

  • Experiments were conducted to develop a pelletization method of minute tobacco seeds for easy handling at seeding by hand or for mechanical seeding. Serpentine, zeolite, and talc were tested as coating materials and the resulting pills were compared in size uniformity, hardness, length of time needed for coating, percentage of pills containing a single seed, and speed of disintegration when submerged in water. Talc was the poorest and zeolite was good only in hardness. On the other hand serpentine was good in most characters above, except for brittleness. This defect, however, was overcome by double coating, first with serpentine and followed by zeolite. This new pelletizing method results in optimum hardness, uniform size, and high ratio of pellets containing one tobacco seed. When compared to bare tobacco seeds, the double-coated seeds did not differ in germination test.

Effects of Winter Cover Crop-Minor Cereal Cropping System on Weed Occurrences and Crop Growth (잡곡-피복작물 작부체계에서 잡초 발생과 작물 생장)

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the weed suppressing effects of two winter cover crops, Chinese milk vetch (CMV) and rye, in minor cereal fields in 2009. The suppressing activities of cover crops were due to the allelopathy of cover crops during weed emerging periods and competitive activity during vegetative growth of weeds. Weed suppression by cover crops were changed from 26.5 g $m^{-2}$, 0.1 g $m^{-2}$ and 0.2 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on June 22 to 428.6 g $m^{-2}$, 1 g $m^{-2}$ and 403.9 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on July 22. The weed dry weights were further changed to 656.3 g $m^{-2}$, 607.8 g $m^{-2}$ and 511.8 g $m^{-2}$ in control, rye field and CMV field, respectively, on August 22. The suppressing effect of cover crops also observed in minor cereals. Plant height and dry weight of sorghum was reduced to 68.7% and 33.6% of handweeding, respectively, on August 5. The reduction was recovered to 82.7% and 55.6% of control, respectively, on August 26. In addition, heading date of minor cereals was delayed by 7 days with rye.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dry matter production and distribution ratio of dry matter produced for each of 5 botanical types (Virginia-Small Seed, Virginia-Large Seed, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung) of Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Peanut culture limiting region. The total dry weight increased in order of Virginia-Large seed, Virginia- Small Seed, Shinpung, Spanish, Valencia type. The maximum Crop growth rates (Cmax) were Virginia-Small seed 18.22-23.41 g/㎡/day, Virginia-Large seed 19.61-20.03 g/㎡/day, Shinpung 16.33-19.77 g/㎡/day, Spanish 13.86-16.28 g/㎡/day, Valencia 13.97-16.25g/㎡/day, respectively. LAI showed the high value at vinyl-mulching than non-mulching. In the early filling stage, distribution ratio of dry matter produced showed the highest at the shinpung type than the other types.

Effect of Winter Mulching on Growth and Fiber Yield of Ramie Plant (동계피복이 모시풀의 생육 및 섬유수량에 미치는 영향)

  • Since ramie suckers distribute soil surface layer within 10cm depth, some of them are dead from low soil temperature in winter. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of various mulching methods on safe overwintering of sucker at three or four years old, fully-grown ramie plots. The sprouting dates of ramie was March 28 in transparent vinyl mulching(TPEF), April 1 in transparent vinyl mulching over cover of straw, manure or rice hull at the amount of 500kg /10a (CM), and April 6 in black vinyl mulching(BDEF). These treatments showed earlier sprouting date from 9 to 18 days than the conventional mulching with 1000 kg straw /10a the sprouting date of which was April 15. TPEF treatment showed the earliest but ununiform sprouting. In contrast, sprouts in CM treatment was uniform but emerged somewhat later compared with the treatment of TPEF. The number of stems per unit area increased 50 percent more in TPEF, and 35 to 39 percent more in CM than the treatment of conventional mulching.

  • This experiment was carried out in the field to investigate the effects of sowing time, mulching materials and planting density on the growth and root yield of Peucedanum japonicum. The optfimum planting time for yield increase at Kyungbuk area whether the plant was grown under non-mulching or black P. E. mulching condition. Black polyethylene (P. E) film mulching was effective to promote emergence and growth, and dry root yield in the P. E. mulching was 10% higher than that in the non-mulching condition. The yield in the $20{\times}15cm$ planting density was 50% higher than that in the conventional $30{\times}20cm$.

  • In this study effect of different mulching materials on yield and crude saponin contents in Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge. The results of this study are summarized as follows: The rhizome yield of seed propagation type in transparent PE mulching cultivation was of which increased 16.7% more than those of non-mulching cultivation. The rhizome yield of young-plant propagation type in green PE mulching and transparent PE mulching cultivations were of which increased 29.4% and 26.5%, respectively more than those of non-mulching cultivation. The contents of methanal extract of seed propagation type in transparent PE mulching and black PE mulching cultivations were of increased each 31.0%, 15.4% more than those of non-mulching cultivation. Crude saponin contents of seed propagation type in transparent PE mulching cultivation was increased up to 30.3% compared to those of non-mulching cultivation. However, the crude saponin contents of seed propagation type in green PE mulching and black & white PE mulching cultivations were not affected by the non-mulching cultivation. Crude saponin contents of young-plant propagation type in transparent PE mulching cultivation was increased 24.0% and 15.4% more than those of green PE mulching and black PE mulching cultivations.
