  • The feasibility study into the development of turbine spinners, which start up the turbo-pump, has been carried out and the design requirements and parameters ranges have been presented. Turbine spinners use the solid propellant as such composite propellant based AN compound with high energy plasticizers, coolants, and phase stabilizer which relieves a sensible volume change due to the phase transformation of AN near room temperature. Propellants which have a homing rate of $0.2{\sim}0.3\;mm/s$ and pressure exponent ranged from 0.3 to 0.6, showed stable burn-out in the standard motor tests. Both the magnitude of ignition energy and its thermal transfer mechanism have been proved to have a tangible effect on the ignition of the pyre starter, and the results of this study showed that a flame temperature of 1400K would be quite adequate to get a stable ignition for the AN composite propellant.

  • A black-box program was implemented in order to monitor abnormal symptoms of human body irregularly occurring during sleep. The system consists of sensor probing body signals, auxiliary devices such as the alarm, lamp, network camera, and signal monitoring computer. Various types of sensors, PPG, ECG, EEG, temperature, respiration sensor, G-sensor, and microphone were used to more exactly identify the causes of abnormal symptoms. If a symptom occurs, the system records the patient's condition to provide information being utilized in the treatment. The sensors are attached on some locations of body being proper to check a specific type of abnormal reaction. Based on the normal range and type of measurement data, criteria of signal levels were set to distinguish abnormal reaction. An abnormal signal being probed, the program starts to operate the lamp, alarm, and network camera at the same time and stores the signal and video data.

  • Grab cranes are used for multi-purpose when the sand and soil are deposited into harbor wharf or the undersea construction is performed. Among the components of crane grab, the wire drum and disc brake pad are key expendables and have disadvantages that lot of heat is generated and very expensive when replacing them. In this study, the thermal image analysis for the disc brake, which works with wire drum of the crane is suggested. The suggested system performs the pad thermal diagnosis through the thermal image using the characteristics that the disc and pad surface temperatures are distributed abnormally before the brake failure and the disc pad damage. Therefore, the damage by the failure can be prevented by discovering the abnormality of the machine parts before failure and the life cycle of the pad and the cost can be extended and saved by operating the crane performing constant checkup for the overload.

  • Resonant-Type Magnetometer(RM) using high permeability isotropic magnetic material is designed to implement Smart Digital Compass. Theoretically, the inductance L of a coil, winding on the magnetic core, is proportion to the change of permeability $\mu(H)$ and, the change values of L can be obtain as the change of frequency by simple Schmitt Trigger circuit. By the use of integrated circuit switch, the RM can be designed with simple circuit and it can provide overcoming the drift by temperature and the variation of operating points in $\mu(H)$ curve. The facts that Metglas 2705M is an optimum magnetic material and ship's permanent magnetism can be obtain from measured values of RM are also known in this study.

  • As chip operating frequency increases, there is growing concern about on-chip interconnect inductance. This paper presents a two-step inductance screening tool to select interconnects with significant inductance effects in a VLSI design. Test chips designed in different CMOS technology nodes are examined. The inductance screening results show that 0.1% of the nets in a design have inductance problems with chips running at its operating frequency, supporting the necessity of a screening process instead of adding inductance model to all the nets in the design. The increase in resistance due to geometry scaling will strongly affect the significance of inductance on delay as technology and frequency scale. Since higher frequency worsens inductance problem and geometry scaling alleviates it, inductance screening tool can provide useful guidelines to circuit designers.

  • Thermal vacuum test should be carried out to verify the performance of the S/C on the ground under the simulated space environment. KARI already completed the construction of a Large Thermal Vacuum Chamber(LTVC) with 8 m of diameter and 10 m of length dimension. LTVC is for the purpose of performing the orbital environment test for large Space Craft(S/C). Inside LTVC, S/C is much smaller than LTVC. For the function test of S/C during the thermal vacuum test, the S/C has to be connected to Electrical Ground Support Equipment(EGSE) which includes several cable and RF wave guide inside LTVC. Also, MLI should be installed on S/C before the test. But it is very difficult to access the S/C inside big LTVC. To solve the accessibility to the S/C inside LTVC, KARI designed an access fixture. This fixture provides easy access to the any S/C thus can help safe installation and saving time for the related work inside LTVC. This paper describes whole process for the design of the access fixture.

  • The electrification of the waste heat of stack is necessary to enhance the efficiency of fuel cell system. For this purpose, the hybrid SOFC/GT/ST system is suitable. The purpose of this work is to predict the performance of methane fueled SOFC/GT/ST hybrid power system and to analyze the influence of operating temperature of stack, current density of stack, and gas turbine pressure ratio. According to the analysis, it is proved that the SOFC/GT/ST hybrid system suppress the rapid decrease in efficiency and lead to the significant improvement of efficiency as compared with SOFC system.

  • HANARO is an open-tank-in-pool-type Korean research reactor that generates 30MW of thermal power. It differs from power plant reactor in that the heat generated by HANARO is exhausted into the atmosphere through a secondary cooling tower, thus maintaining the core temperature constant. During every monthly inspection of the cooling tower, large vibrations that exceeded the permissible limit were observed at cooling fan gear reducer No. 4 of the cooling tower. The purpose of this study is to identify the origin of the large vibration and to repair it. FFT spectrum analysis is performed to identify the part that caused the large vibration. The results of the frequency analysis showed that the vibration frequency was 354 Hz, which is twice the natural frequency of the pinion gear. A check of the pinion gear revealed that there was a crack on the surface of the pinion gear. After the gear was replaced, the reducer operated normally.

  • Selective catalytic reduction(SCR) is known as one of promising methods for reducing $NO_x$ emissions in diesel exhaust gases. $NO_x$ emissions react with ammonia in the catalyst surface of SCR system at working temperature of catalyst. In this study, to raise the reacting temperature when the exhaust gas temperature is too low, a heater is located at the bottom of SCR reactor. At an ambient temperature, ammonia is radially injected perpendicular to the exhaust gas flow at inlet pipe and uniformly mixed in the mixing area after being impinged against the wall. To predict the turbulent model inside the mixing area of SCR system, the standard ${\kappa}\;-\;{\varepsilon}$ model is applied. This work investigates numerically the effects of induced heat on the gaseous flow. The results show that the Taylor-$G{\ddot{o}}rtler$ type vortex is generated after the gaseous flow impinges the wall in which these vortices influence the temperature distribution. The addition of heat disturbs the flow structure in bottom area and then stretching flow occurs. Vorticity strand is also formed when heat is continuously increased. Constriction process takes place, however, when a further heat input over a critical temperature is increased and finally forms shed vortex which is disconnected from the vorticity strand. The strong vortex restricts the heat transport in the gaseous flow.

  • In this paper new air-cooling system utilizing Stirling engine was proposed for improving efficiency in solar photovoltaic power generation. The solar cell plate was equipped with semi-circular channel for air flow on the backside. Beta-type Stirling engine was installed on the plate and its flywheel was connected to a motor fan by a transmission belt. A forced convective air flow for heat radiation was generated by the operation of the self-starting Stirling engine. The performance tests for power generation of solar cell with or without the proposed air-cooling system were conducted under halogen lamp. From the experimental results, it was found that decline in output voltage of the solar cell with proposed cooling system was 25% less than that of the solar cell without cooling system.
