  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of zinc administration on the autistic children. The subject diagnosed as infantile autism were 24 male and 10 female children of a special school in Taegu city. Control group were selected from 1:2 ratio matched with cases on sex and age. The results were as followings. In female autistic group, the mean content of zinc in hair was significantly lower than control group, but in male the result was inverse at all age group. The content of zinc in hair showed significant correlation with age in male autistic group and control group. Zinc content of hair, age and sex accounted for 37.2% of the variance of autistic score and the most significant variable was zinc content. Autistic group were divided into two group. Group I which zinc content of hair below 150 ppm were administrated with multi-vitamin contained 10 mg of zinc, Group II which zinc content of hair above 150 ppm were administrated with placebo. Total administration period was eight weeks. In zinc administration group, there was a decreasing tendency of autistic score as the zinc content of hair was increased but the relationship was not statistically significant.

  • Objectives:This study investigated the severity and frequency of depression in mothers with autistic children and the correlation between K-BDI score of mothers with autism and severity of autistic symptoms of their children. Methods:The subjects for this study consisted of 45 autistic children and their mothers. The severity of autistic symptoms of children were evaluated by K-CARS and severity of depressive symptoms of mothers with autistic children evaluated by the K-BDI. Results:1) Total K-BDI scores of mothers with autistic children were $17.3{\pm}10.9$ and this score was belonged to subclinical depression on the K-BDI STEN score. There were significant differences of total KBDI score between in mothers with autistic children and in those of normal control. The 26.7% of 45 mothers with autistic children were depression. 2) There was no correlation between total K-BDI score and each factor of mothers with autistic children and K-CARS score of the their children. Conclusion:There were many depression in mothers with autistic children than in those of normal control. This result suggested that the education and the supportive psychotherapy for mothers with autistic children is as important as the treatment for autism.

  • Objectives:This study was designed to compare the emotional/behavioral characteristics between the siblings of children with autism and normally developing children. Methods:The subjects were 34 children between 10 and 16 years of age, 17 siblings of children with autism, 17 siblings of nonhandicapped children. Both groups performed CDI(Kovacs' Children Depression Inventory), RCMAS(Revised Chidren's Manifest Anxiety Scale), SPPC(Self-Perception Profile for Children), Self-esteem scale. Their mothers performed K-CBCL(Korean -Child Behavior Checklist). The results of those test were analysed by Student's-test. Results:Both social competence and total social competence subsclae scores were significantly lower in sibling group of children with autism than in control group. However, each group was not significantly different on the scores of internalizing symptom, externalizing symptom subscale of CBCL, CDI, RCMAS, Self-Perception Profile and Self-esteem scale. Conclusion : Siblings of children with autism had a lower social competence than normal control group. Group comparisons indicated that siblings of children with autism and normal children did not differ on any self-report measures such as anxiety, depression, self-concept and self-esteem. Further research using more subjects will be needed.

  • It is known that as many as 15-20 in 10,000 children are diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder. A framework of the treatment system for children with autism using affective computing technologies was proposed by Chung and Yoon. In this paper, a prototype for the framework is proposed. It consists of emotion stimulating module, multi-modal bio-signal sensing module, treatment module using virtual reality, and emotion recognition module. Primitive experiments on emotion recognition show the usefulness of the proposed system.

  • Plasma $dopamine-{\beta}-hydroxylase(DBH)$ activity was measured in 37 autistic disorders, 26 atypical pervasive developmental disorders and 23 controls, to elucidate the biological etiology in pervasive developmental disorders. The results are summarized as follows : 1) In the autistic group, the mean plasma DBH activity was significantly elevated compared to the atypical and control groups. The mean plasma DBH activity was also significantly elevated in pervasive developmental disorders(autistic disorder+atypical developmental disorder) compared to control group. 2) In the atypical and control groups, the DBH activity significantly increased with age, but in the autistic group, the DBH activity was not significantly correlated with age. 3) No significant correlation was found between the DBH activity and the severity of psychopathology. These findings support the hypothesis of a possible involvement of brain catecholamine dysfunction in the production of autistic symptoms, and this dysfunction might be due to the abnormal ontogenetic process of DBH activity in autistic disorders.

  • Purpose: According to the Body-EU education program, this study investigates changes after conducting education with ten subjects with autism symptoms (disability level 2~3) 63 times (126 hours) for nearly two years. Methods: Body-EU habit practice, note writings discussion, singing, Bible study, question and communication, class arrangement, etc., a total of 63 times were educated for 2 hours each week. Results: Subjects felt comfortable breathing and improved energy. Other subject's habit of an out-toed gait step and bending back alleviated. One subject made it easier to speak, so if talking with no strength. When breathing, the stuffy nose improved, the eyes became calm, and the hands and feet were warm. Subject felt like my head was cleaned. Heart tightness disappeared. Subject felt at ease as gaining confidence. The subject gained confidence in seeing whoever the other person was. The subject's pronunciation became more sophisticated, with more confidence, and his mouth cramping alleviated. Subjects with right eye movements showed a relatively high concentration in education time. Conclusions: Subjects are educated and trained in making general habits of their body from morning to going to bed. This study was a research program for ordinary people, but it confirmed with autism. Whether it was genetic autism or acquired autism, they could be somewhat relieved.

  • In 1944 Hans Asperger reported odd bizzare 400 children who showed autism like clinical symptoms but had higher intelligence and relatively intact speech function. He named these child 'autistic psychopathy'. Since them there were many controversial views about this syndrome. Some regards Asperger syndrome as the high functioning autism variant or preschizophrenic childhood condition or childhood form of schizoid personality disorder. Though there were still many controversy, recently ICD-10, DSM-IV accepted Asperger's syndrome as a distinct subtype of pervasive developmental disorder. The authors reviewed the history and conceptual changes of Asperger syndrome and summarized the interesting recent research findings. In addition, the authors argue that this syndrome has some linkage with autism and schizoid personality disorder and proposed that these is disorders do have common defect in social instinctual development.
