  • The present experiment was performed in order to know the anti-emetic effect of acupuncture, aquapuncture with metoclopramide and moxibustion on the xylazine induced emesis in dogs. The animals were devided into a control group (non-acupoint) and two experimental groups (BL-20 and LIV-13), respectively. Acupuncture, aquapuncture with metoclopramide (1 mg/kg) and moxibustion were applied to animals for 20 minutes before xylazine injection (2.2 mg/kg, IM). In acupuncture group, the emetic rates in BL-20 (16.7%) and LIV-13 (16.7%) were lower than that of control group (50%), respectively. In aquapuncture group, the emetic rates in BL-20 (16.7%) and LIV-13 (0.0%) were lower than that of control group (50%), respectively. In moxibustion group, the emetic rates in BL-20 (50%) and LIV-13 (16.7%) were lower than that of control group (83.3%), respectively. Considering above the findings collectively, it is considered that acupuncture, aquapuncture with metoclopramide and moxibustion at BL-20 and LIV-13 are effective and especially aquapuncture with metoclopramide at LIV-13 is the most effective treatment to prevent the emesis induced by xylazine among groups.

  • This study was performed to elucidate the effect of acupuncture and aqua-acupuncture in dogs. Each group was divided into control (18 dogs), PC-6 (6 dogs) and BL-21 (6 dogs) group for the antiemetic effect of acupuncture, respectively. And, the animals were divided into control (18 dogs), PC-6 (18 dogs) and BL-21 (18 dogs) group for the antiemetic effect of aqua-acupuncture with metoclopramide, respectively. 2% xylazine was injected to the all dogs to induce the emesis, and acupuncture and aqua-acupuncture treatment (0.5% metoclopramide) were applied to animals for 20 min. before xylazine injection, respectively. Emetic rates in PC-6 (33.3%) and BL-21 (16.7%) were lower than that of control group (44.4%) in acupuncture groups, respectively. Emetic rates in PC-6 (16.7%) and BL-21 (0.0%) were lower than that of control group (38.9%) in aqua-acupuncture groups, respectively. Based on these findings, it was considered that the antiemetic effects of acupuncture and aqua-puncture at BL-21 were more effective than those of PC-6 groups, and aqua-acupuncture with metoclopramide at BL-21 was the most effective among them.

  • Objectives : To test the therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture applied to PC6 and ST36 for the relief of fullness of epigastrium or epigastric pain. Subjects and Methods : We enrolled fifty patients in a case series study The patients were mainly female (94 %) with an average age of 55 years $({\pm}15.0)$; the average age of the male patients was 51 years $({\pm}20.0)$. Twenty four percent of patients were in acute phase which epigastric pain had lasted below 1 month. Twenty eight percent of patients were in chronic phase which the pain had lasted over 6 month. The rest were in subacute phase. Acupuncture needles were inserted into PC6 and ST36 bilaterally. The acupuncture treatments were performed 2 times a week for 4 weeks. One treat session was lasted for 30 min. At each visit, overall symptomatic improvement, frequency and intensity of symptoms were checked on a 4 scaled questionnaire. Results : After acupuncture treatment, a progressive improvement of pain intensity was reported in 46 of the 50 patients, including 23 of excellent and 23 of good. The progress of symptom was more superior in subacute phase to acute or chronic phase. The symptom of 22 of 24 patients in subacute phase was improved. No patient experienced minor side-effects during acupuncture treatment. Conclusion : These preliminary data suggest the acupuncture treatment provides good pain relief for most patients presenting with epigastric pain. Randomized trials with appropriate control groups are needed to validate the effectiveness of this therapy in the treatment of epigastric pain.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate whether Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture affects cerebral hemodynamics〔regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF), mean arterial blood pressure(MABP)〕in normal rats, and to make manifest whether Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture is mediated by cyclooxygenase or guanylate cyclase. Methods : This experiments was to investigate at the other changes of rCBF and MABP at Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture in normal rats, pretreated rats with indomethacin(1 mg/kg, i.v.) and pretreated rats with methylene blue$(10\;{\,u}g/kg,\;i.v.)$. Results : 1. Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture was significantly increased rCBF during acupuncture and after withdrawing of the needle. 2. Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture was decreased MABP during acupuncture, but Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture was increased MABP in compared with normal condition. 3. Pretreatment with indomethacin(1 mg/kg, i.v.) was significantly inhibited Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture induced increase of rCBF, but was increased Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture induced increase of MABP. 4. Pretreatment with methylene blue$(10\;{\mu}g/kg,\;i.v.)$ was significantly decreased Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture induced increase of rCBF and MABP. This results suggest that Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture increased rCBF by dilating pial arterial diameter, and the mechanism of Haenggan(LR2) Reduction in Acupuncture is mediated by guanylate cyclase.

  • This study was performed from October 1997 to March 1998 on 42 healthy students to observe the effects of acupuncture at Hap-kok (LI4) according to the meridian and qi-xue(氣血) phenomenon of oriental medicine's theory. Skin temperature on the Kok-Chi(LI11) and Yong-Hyang(LI20) were measured by D. I. T. I. (Digital Infrared Thermograph Imaging) before acupuncture stimulation, 1min after and after acupuncture stimulation during 10 min. 1. In healthful man, average skin temperature about Kok-Chi area was in low than Yong-Hyang, and temperature change for 10 min was decreased significantly. 2. In Kok-Chi, the temperature decrease index of execution was shown in low than control. 3. When the temperature of Yong-Hyang(left) was higher, the index was shown in high than control. 4. When the temperature of Kok-Chi (left) was higher, execution temperature change was decreased significantly than control. The above results indicates that D. I. T. I. was a useful method to observe follow-up the effects and changes by acupuncture stimulation on objective evaluation of phenomenon for the meridian system. Thus, acupuncture on LI4 affects to thermal changes of ST25 and LI4, but exact examination of thermal changes on ST25 will have to be.
