An experimental study to establish a standard of sump model test of pump station was implemented. Comparison of foreign standard was also performed. Configuration condition around a bell mouth suction intake was easily adjusted by 3-axis traversing system and partition allocation. Operational condition was also varied widely to give accurate test data. PIV was also introduced to produce Quantitative analysis of flow field such as free-surface vortex and submerged vortex occurring in the model test. More detailed vortex behaviors were represented by PIV analysis.

In this study the change of free surface vortex is represented at different times according to height of water and with or without curtain wall installation. The air volume fraction is investigated at each condition of water level and the influence about creation of vortex is analyzed. The height of sump intake is taken as 100mm and the water level is divided into 5 steps. The sump model is the TSJ model and the curtain wall is applied by HI standard of America. The results shows that the free surface vortex can be identified on the isotropic surface at air volume fraction 1%~5% and the vortices make an air column from the free surface to the sump intake and are created and destroyed repeatedly. In the higher water level, less air is absorbed into the intake pipe. After curtain wall installation, the suction rate of the air volume fraction is decreased by 6.7%. The result of the vortex motion according to time, works on a cycle.

In this study the change of free surface vortex is expressed through the time volume fraction using multiphase unsteady condition in sump, because in previous studies of the pump sump did not represent the behavior of the free surface vortex exactly due to the reason it was calculated using single phase and steady condition. The reliability of the computational analysis is verified through comparing experimental results with that of present numerical analysis. Homogeneous free surface model is used to apply interactions of air and water. The results show that the free surface vortex can be identified on the isotropic surface at air volume fraction 1%~5%. The vortices make an air column from the free surface to the sump intake and are created and destroyed repeatedly. The behavior of free surface vortex at numerical analysis is quite similar to experimental test. The result of vortex motion according to time, works on a cycle.

Based on the flow characteristics around a piercing cylinder, a free surface-flow velocitmetry which can be used in extremely harsh environment such as molten steel flow was developed. The velocimetry is consisted of finite length cylinder, load detecting elastic plate, electric signal transducer and data acquisition H/W and S/W. Using such a velocimetry, two velocity measurement schemes were established which one is flow resistance detecting scheme and the other is Karman Vortex frequency detecting scheme. For calibration of each scheme, realistic flow water model was used and in followings, detailed calibration processes were explained.

In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are shown to compare well with the experimental results for the case of infinity Rossby number. The satisfactory agreement between the two results was possible when in the numerics the free surface was treated as a solid wall so that a no-slip condition was applied on the surface. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.

We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are not show to compare well with the experimental results for the case of the Rossby number 3. Because the numerical results calculate on the assumption that vortex flows are axi-symmetric flow on the other hand real experimental results are show asymmetric flow. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.
In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the dynamic characteristics of a vortex ring in a circular cylinder generated by impinging a fluid blob from a hole on the bottom wall of the cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical and horizontal planes by using a specially designed optical apparatus. Results of three-dimensional computation for the flow are shown to be in a satisfactory agreement with the experimental ones. We also report the experimental results which show a breaking of the axi-symmetric pattern after the vortex touches the free surface.

In general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, my introduce air into pun, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. This study investigated experimentally the formation of the vortex to understand the mechanism of vortex formation and to prevent the formation of vortex in the sump model using by the model test and PIV tool. Sump model was manufactured to 1/8 scale with the drawing of W intake pumping station. from the results of model test and PIV, the vortex were occurred the in the whole section. Thus, sump model tests with the anti-vortex device might be considered to prevent the formation of vortex in the sump model.
The flow around a circular cylinder advancing beneath the free surface is numerically investigated using a VOF method. The simulations cover Froude numbers in the range of 0.2~0.6 and gap ratios (h/d) in the range of 0.1~2.0, where h is the distance from the free surface to a cylinder, and d is the diameter of a cylinder at Reynolds number 180. It is observed that the vortex suppression effect and surface deformation increase as the gap ratio decreases or the Froude number increases. The most important results of the present study are as follows. The proximity of the free surface causes an initial increase in the Strouhal number and drag coefficient, and the maximum Strouhal number and drag coefficient occur in the range of 0.5~0.7. However, this trend reverses as the gap ratio becomes small, and the lift coefficient increases downward as the gap ratio decreases.
