  • To study the carrying capacity behavior of pile, dynamic pile testis and static load tests were carried out on two instrumented piles during and some time after pile driving. Cone Penetration Test( CPT) and Standard Penetration Test(SPT) were also performed at the test site before pile tests to investigate the relationship between unit skin friction of piles and cone tip resistance values and SPT N values. Total static capacity of pile reached the ultimate stage at the pile head settlement of about 0.055D (D : Pile diameter), at which skin friction of Pile already Passed the maximum value, but the end bearing was still increasing with the pile head settlement. The carrying capacity of pile increased in the form of natural logarithmic function with the time after pile driving. The increase in skin friction with time was very substantial the increase in skin friction 40 days after pile driving was 4.6 times of that determined during pile driving. The contribution of skin friction to the total capacity twas insignificant in the beginning, but became substantial 40 days after pile driving. This implies that the tested pile initially responded as an end bearing pile and later behaved as a friction pile. It was also noted that unit skin friction of pile might be ielated to cone tip resistance values(q.) and SPT N values, though the coefficient of this relationship might differ from one soil group to another and was somewhat greater than the value used in the design practice of Korea.

  • In order to develop the commercial storage method of chestnut by irradiation combined with natural low temperature, a chestnut variety Ok-gwang was stored in a natural low temperature storage room ($450{\times}650{\times}250$ cmH; year-round temperature change, $2-17^{\circ}C$; R.H., 80-85%) on batch scale followed by irradiation with optimum dose level. Sprouting rate of chestnut was 100% after seven month storage in control whereas that of 20-25 Krad irradiated group was only 5-15%. In comparison of rotting rate, weight loss and texture, 25 Krad irradiated group was better than that of control. Moisture and reducing sugar were increased in contrast with the decrease of total sugar during nine month storage and these changes were more remarkable in control. Ascorbic acid content was slightly decreased both in control and irradiated group; more decrement was noticed in control.

  • It is known that low birth weight is a risk factor for poor outcome in cardiac surgery for many cardiac defects. Truncus arteriosus is a rare congenital anomaly that has an unfavorable natural course. We report a successful surgical correction of truncus arteriosus in an 13-day-old premature infant with body weight of 1.5 kg and gestational age of 32 weeks. We used autologous untreated pericardial conduit without valve in right ventricular outflow reconstruction. The patients remains in good condition with normal body weight (50 percentile) and wide right ventricular outflow tract 20 months after the operation.

  • Truncus arteriosus with interrupted aortic arch is a very rare congenital cardiac anomaly that has an unfavorable natural course. We report a successful one-stage repair of truncus arteriosus with interrupted aortic arch through median sternotomy in a 25-day-old neonate weighing 3.1 kg. We reconstructed the aortic arch with direct side-to-end anastomosis between ascending and descending aortas. The right ventricular outflow reconstruction was performed with untreated autologous pericardial conduit without valve following Lecompte maneuver. The patient has been grown-up in good condition (25 ∼ 50 percentile of body weight) and shows the right ventricular outflow tract wide 1 year after the operation.

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic progressive disease, characterized by irreversible airflow limitation, with a partially reversible component. The pathological abnormalities of COPD are associated with lung inflammation, imbalances of proteinase and antiproteinase, and oxidative stress, which are induced by noxious particles and gases in susceptible individuals. The physiological changes of COPD are mucus hypersecretion, ciliary dysfunction, airflow limitation, pulmonary hyperinflation, gas exchange abnormalities, pulmonary hypertension, cor pulmonale and systemic effects. The airflow limitation principally results from an increase in the resistance of the small conducting airways and a decrease in pulmonary elastic recoil due to emphysematous lung destruction. This article provides a general overview of the pathophysiology of COPD.

  • We studied on the decoloring efficiency of a dying and finishing industrial wastewater containing reactive dyes in the ozone treatment system. The wastewater containing reactive dyes improved the decolorization by the ozone oxidation. In order to determine the optical conditions for ozonation, various operation factors such as initial wastewater concentrations, pH, temperature, and ozone dose were evaluated. Ozone utilization rate was improved in general with the increase of initial concentration of wastewater. And the decolorization speed or reactive dyes was more decreased in deep color of blue series than in light color such as yellow series. The colorization of wastewater containing reactive dyes was changed step through midle color depending upon increasing of ozone treated time. The efficiency of decolorization for wastewater was improved with the pH increased and the temperature of ozone treatment system decreased.

  • The fruit soluble solids and acidity decreased during storage regardless of fruit size, fruit firmness decreased also, and the decreasing rate of the firmness in large fruit was higher than small. The ethylene production of fruit was increased during storage, and there was the peak of fruit respiration rate at 2 and 6 weeks after harvest. The calcium and magnesium content was the highest in peel, the lowest in flesh, and intermediate in core. Especially, the calcium content in the outer flesh was lower than in the inner flesh, and the magnesium content in the middle part of flesh was lower than in the other parts. The Ca/Mg ratio in the inner flesh and the K/Ca ratio in the outer flesh were higher than in the other parts.

  • Genetic testing has been generalized for the diagnosis of diseases and is an important method of research with advances in the life sciences. In particular, we should give better attention to the genetic test for a fetus. Because the fetus has no autonomy, ethical and social issues can arise. Therefore, appropriate genetic counseling is needed for parents to be informed with the characteristics, natural progress, and possible treatment of a genetic disease, prior to the prenatal genetic test. Physicians should also inform parents how a particular genetic risk factor relates with the likelihood of a disease, in order to assist the parents in making the best decision. Furthermore, the current law for prenatal genetic testing should be approached rationally.

  • Continued research needs to be devoted to understanding the natural history of rotator cuff tears. Recent studies have shown progression of tear, symptomatic flare-ups and irreversible change in rotator cuffs managed nonsurgically. These data allow the grouping of patients with rotator cuff tears into three categories based on risk-benefit ratios. Nonsurgical care should be maximized for patients with impingement symptoms only, with partial-thickness tears, with chronic tears, and for the elderly patients. The proper selection of candidates for nonsurgical management should lead to the high success rate quoted by multiple authors. Even though conservative treatment is necessary, early surgery should be considered for tears that are acute, small or medium, associated with shoulder loss of function, or occur in a younger patient. Prolonged nonsurgical care in these patients risks tear propagation and irreversible changes to the cuff, which may complicate rotator cuff repair.

  • Renal diseases other than diabetic nephropathy can occur In diabetic patients. Urinary abnormalities or clinical courses inconsistent with the natural progression of diabetic nephropathy are suggestive of non-diabetic renal diseases and should lead to more extensive investigations. Presence of non-diabetic renal diseases in diabetic patients can alter the treatment plan and the prognosis. We report a 9-year-old girl who had type 1 membranoproliferatiye glomerulonephritis as well as type 1 diabetes mellitus.
