  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of runner development based on production period and to investigate the yield in different cropping type to nursery plant age. In runner development experiment, heating + lighting + $GA_3$ + cluster removal treatment increased the number of runners by 13.1 times higher in spring season than control(heating only) in overwintering mother-plant. Treatment of 20ppm $GA_3$ was the most effective for runner production in autumn. In nursery plant age experiment, 60 days old nursery plants produced more flower cluster than 40 days old ones. This result indicated that the yield potential was so low that overwintering runners would be adaptable for spring or summer cultivation.

  • Experiments were conducted to select the optimum cultivars which are adaptable to South Korea through estimating the differences in daughter plant production and growth response among seven strawberry cultivars. In the vegetative stage, Nyoho, Akihime and Suhong produced more daughter plants than other cultivars whereas Akaneko and Tochinomine, which developed less runners, showed better condition in runner vigorness. The quality of daughter plants derived from forcing cultivars was uniform in general. Even though there was no significant differences in rooting among cultivars, runners from Akaneko and Tochinomine developed more roots and fresh weight of roots than other cultivars. In the forcing cultivars, Akihime showed the most excellent plant vigorness, yield and highest sugar content of fruits and also was 5 days faster than Nyoho in flowering date. However, the fruit tended to be softened. In the semi-forcing cultivars, Tochinomine was excellent in vigorness, firmness, sugar content of fruits and the average of fruit weight but low in flower numbers per cluster and late in the emergency of second flower cluster. Although Akaneko showed highest in sugar/acid ratio and rich in flavour, lighting treatment was recommended to this cultivar for early harvest because of softness of fruits.

  • Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof), the causal agent of crown and root rot in strawberry, is the most serious soilborne disease of nursery plants in Korea. The possibility of infection by Fof through runner propagation from infected mother plants of strawberry cv. 'Kumhyang' was assessed in stolons and daughter plants hanging from raised beds. The number of daughter plants from an infected mother plant in plastic house and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) system, 280 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was 2.7 and 3.8 plants after 58 days, respectively. However, healthy mother plants produced 6.5 and 8.4 daughter plants, respectively. The pathogen was detected in the uppermost portion of the stolon after 58 days, but was not detected further down the stolon. After 90 days, it was detected in all portions of the stolon between mother and $1^{st}$ daughter plant and in 60% of all $1^{st}$ daughter plants. The pathogen was not detected in the corresponding portions of the non-infected controls. These results show that infected mother plants can transmit Fof to their daughter plants without passing through the soil and $1^{st}$ daughter was used as mother plant in PPF system for propagating healthy plants.

  • Objective of this research was to determine the influence of physico.chemical properties of root substrates on growth of daughter plants that were developed through plastic bag cultivation of mother plants in 'Seolhyang' strawberry propagation. Six different formulations of root substrates for daughter plant cultivation were peatmoss + vermiculite (5:5, A), peatmoss + perlite (7:3, B), coir dust + perlite (7:3, C), coir dust + peatmoss + perlite (3.5:3.5:3.0, D), rice-hull + coir dust + perlite (2:7:1, E), and rice hull + coir dust (3:7, F). The 10 cm plastic pots filled with formulated substrates were located near the plastic bag where mother plants were growing. Then the runners and daughter plants originated from mother plants were fixed on each root substrate filled into 10 cm plastic pot and daughter plants were grown in the plastic pots. The container capacity and air space showed big differences among substrates tested. The substrates E and F had the less container capacity and the higher air space than other substrates tested. This indicates that the two substrates would have difficulties in water managements during the raising of daughter plants. The substrates of A, B, and D which contained peatmoss in formulation had higher nitrogen concentrations than those containing coir dust or rice hull. The substrates of E and F which contained rice hull had lower nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentrations than those that contained coir. The crown diameters of daughter plants grown in substrate A were around 13 mm which is thicker than those grown in other substrates. The fresh weights of daughter plants grown in A substrate were the heaviest followed by C, F, D, E, and B. The dry weight of daughter plants showed similar tendency to those of fresh weight. The daughter plants which had heavy fresh and dry weights and thick crown diameter are considered good seedlings. Based on this justification, the substrates of A, C and F are acceptable for daughter plant growth of 'Seolhyang' strawberry.

  • This research was conducted to evaluate the influence of root restriction materials and media on the growth of runner plantlets of 'Seolhyang' strawberry in a nursery field. To achieve this, the influence of three kinds of root media on the growth of runner plantlets was monitored when polyethylene film was used as the root restriction material. In addition, the influence of various root restriction materials (RRS) such as transparent polyethylene film (PE), non-woven fabric (NF), perforated polyethylene film (PP), and root proofing sheet (RPS) on the changes in volumetric water content (VWC) and temperature of root media as well as growth of runner plantlet were investigated when expanded rice hull (ERH) was used as the root medium. In the comparison of root media, growth parameters such as leaf area and crown thickness at 20 d after fixation as well as crown thickness and fresh weights of root and above-ground tissue at 40 d after runner plantlet fixation were higher in the ERH treatment than in sandy loam and loamy sand. When the influence of RRS was compared, the VWC of ERH was 55% just after irrigation, but decreased to 26% at just before irrigation. Ranges of the VWC as influenced by irrigation cycle were 16 to 10% in the PP and less than 10% in the NF and RPS. The soil temperature in the PE treatment was around $1^{\circ}C$ lower than in NF, PP, and RPS. The differences between day and night temperatures were also smaller in the PE treatment rather than those in NF, PP, and RPS. The growths of runner plantlet 50 d after fixation showed that plant heights as well as fresh weights of root and above-ground tissue were higher in the PE treatment than in NF, PP, and RPS. NF and PP did not effectively restrict roots inside the medium and the roots of runner plantlets penetrated through the root restriction materials resulting in the formation of root system below the restriction materials. The above results indicate that ERH is more effective than sandy loam or loamy sand as root medium. PE rather than NF, PP, or RPS as root restriction material resulted in better growth of runner plantlets in propagation of 'Seolhyang' strawberry. The results of this research will be used for production of high quality runner plantlets in strawberry propagation.

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of application method and concentration of gibberellin $A_3$ ($GA_3$) on the growth, runner production, and seedling quality of strawberry plants (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa Duch. cv. Maehyang) during nursery period. The mother plants of strawberry were transplanted in pot ($64{\times}27{\times}18cm$) filled with commercial growing medium on March 20, 2018. $GA_3$ concentration was applied as 0, 50, 100 or $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ with spray or drench to 45 mL per plant at 4 weeks after transplanting, respectively. Nutrient solution was supplied with the EC $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ after the transplanting and supplied 350 mL per pot twice a day (15 min per one time) after rooting. The growth characteristics of mother plants of strawberry were measured at 7 weeks after treatment, and growth characteristics of daughter plants of strawberry were measured at 10 weeks after treatment. Runner length and diameter of mother plant was the longest or thickest in the spray with $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ than the other treatments, respectively. Soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) value of mother plant was the lowest in spray with $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. However, leaf length, leaf width, and crown diameter showed no significant differences in all treatment among application method and concentration of $GA_3$. As the concentration of $GA_3$ increased, physiological disorder like stretchiness of crown occurred more. The physiological disorder was the most occurred in spray treatment with $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, but drench treatment occurred less than spray treatment. The number of runners and daughter plants increased with increasing concentration of $GA_3$ regardless of application methods. In the growth characteristics of the daughter plants, leaf length and leaf width of first daughter plant, plant height, crown diameter, leaf area and SPAD value of second daughter plant, and plant height of third daughter plant were the significantly greatest in drench with $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ treatment. This results indicate that growth and runner production of mother plants and growth of daughter plants of strawberry were the best achieved by drench application in the $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $GA_3$.

  • Effects of different application of nematicides (fosthiazate 5% G, ethoprophos 5% G, and diazinon 34% EC) for the control of Aphelenchoides fragariae in strawberry were evaluated in a greenhouse experiments. Mother strawberry (Fragaria grandiflora) cv. Yeohong were dipped in solution of nematicides (fosthiazate or ethoprophos at 2.5 g a.i./liter in $20^{\circ}C\;or\;46^{\circ}C$) for 10 min. and planted in a greenhouse for dipping treatment. For the compare, mother strawberry were dipped in hot water for 10 min. without chemicals. For soil treatment, fosthiazate or ethoprophos at 3 kg a.i./ha were mixed into soil. For foliar spray, diazinon at 3.4 g a.i./liter was sprayed at foliage until runoff. At 40, 80, and 100 days after planting, runners were harvested from each treatment and the rate of nematode infestation and the number of nematodes per plant were examined. After 100 days of planting, mother strawberry plants dipped in fosthiazate solution (2.5 g a.i./liter, $20^{\circ}C$) for 10 min. produced more number of healthy runners and reduced % of infected runner as much as 90% and also had fewer nematodes per runner. Fosthiazate was more effective than ethoprophos. Foliar application of diazinon was reduced A. fragariae populations only in early season. Hot water treatment and nematicide soil treatment were less effective.

  • The influence of physicochemical properties of root substrates on the growth of mother plants and occurrence of daughter plants in 'Seolhyang' strawberry propagation were investigated through plastic bag cultivation. Six different formulations of root substrates were coir dust + perlite (5:5, A), coir dust + perlite (6:4, B), coir dust + perlite (7:3, C), coir dust + coconut chip (7:3, D), coir dust + coconut chip (6:4, E), and peatmoss + vermiculite (5:5, v/v; F). The total porosities (TP) and container capacities (CC) of all root substrates were higher than 85% and 55%, respectively, indicating that all substrates were in the acceptable range. But the TP and CC of F substrate were 91.5% and 60%, respectively, which were the highest among the root substrates tested. In the soil chemical properties analyzed before planting and after harvesting of 'Seolhyang' strawberry mother plants, the root substrates of A, B, C, and F had higher electrical conductivity and $NO_3$-N concentrations than those of D and F. The root substrates of A, B, C, and F had heavier runner fresh and dry weights, longer runner lengths, and more daughter plant occurrence than those of D and F. The treatment F had higher tissue N content than any other treatments at 120 days after the transplanting of 'Seolhyang' strawberry and statistical differences were not observed among remained 5 substrates. The treatment of F also had the higher tissue contents of other nutrients except N analyzed at 120 days after transplanting. These results indicated that soil chemical properties rather than physical properties severely influenced the growth of runners and occurrence of daughter plants.

  • Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), a herbaceous perennial crop, is a popular fruit crop with high economical and nutritive values. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the runner training angle (RTA) on the length of internodes and number of runners produced in strawberry 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang' in an attempt to achieve a higher production rate of runner plants and increase the propagation efficiency. Runners were trained for 30 days to grow at an angle of 0° (vertically upward), 45°, 90° (horizontal), 135°, or 180° (hanging down) from the upward vertical axis. The experiment was carried out in a glasshouse with 29/20℃ day/night temperatures, an average light intensity of 450 μmol·m-2·s-1 PPFD coming from the sun, and a natural photoperiod of 12 hours. For both 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang', the RTA affected number and length of runners, and number and fresh and dry weights of runner plants. Training at an angle of 135° or 180° shortened length of runners and internodes in 'Seolhyang'. These RTAs also produced runner plants with the lowest fresh and dry weights in both cultivars. The RTA did not affect the runner diameter, but affected the runner morphology in both cultivars. As compared to a RTA of 135°, a 180° RTA increased number of runner plants produced, making it the most proliferative RTA.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum electrical conductivity (EC) levels of nutrient solution for growth of mother plants and increasing occurrence of daughter plants of strawberry ($Fragaria{\times}ananassa$ Duch. cv. Maehyang) using hydroponics. The mother plants of strawberry were transplanted in cultivation pot ($61{\times}27{\times}18cm$) filled with coir medium on March 22, 2017. Nutrient solution was supplied by the drip tape at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ of EC levels for rooting during 11 days. After rooting, the mother plants of strawberry was treated at the EC levels of 0.6, 1.2 or $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. Growth characteristics, such as mother plants and daughter plants of strawberry were measured at 100 days after transplanting. The plant height of mother plant was significantly higher at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment, and the crown diameter of mother plant was significantly greater at $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment. The fresh and dry weights of shoot were higher at both 0.6 and, $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatments. The number of runners was not significantly different in all treatments. The fresh and dry weights of runner were heavier at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ than other treatments. The number of daughter plants was the highest, 16.7 at the $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment. However, the fresh and dry weights of third daughter plant were the heaviest at $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment. Although the daughter plants were a large of production at $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment, the low EC levels of strawberry were positive in terms of seedling quality during nursery. These results indicated that growth of mother plant and occurrence of daughter plants were greater at the EC $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ nutrient solution for hydroponic cultivation of 'Maehyang' strawberry during nursery period.
