  • Interpretations of 3-component magnetic logging data obtained for a reinforced bar as a model of the line of the magnetic dipoles are conducted using a least squared inversion technique. The length of the bar is 1.12 m, sampling interval is 0.05 m, the distance between the bar and the borehole is 0.3 m, and the top of the bar is fixed at 0 m of depth. The bar is set to be approximately vertical. Magnetic anomalies smoothed with FFT are used as input data for the inversion. For the interpretation of magnetic logging data the depth to the top, the length, the magnetic moment per unit length, the direction of the magnetization (declination and inclination), and the bearing and plunge of the line of magnetic dipoles are left as unknown parameters. The comparison of the results obtained from the individual inversion of the horizontal component or the vertical component of the magnetic anomalies, and those from the simultaneous inversion of horizontal and vertical component of the magnetic anomalies shows that there exist some disagreements between each inversion result. The depth to the bottom of the bar, which is actually 1.12 m, is estimated as 1.18 m, and the inclination of the magnetization is estimated as -76°by simultaneous inversion. The negative value of the inclination indicates that the strength of the remnant magnetization is much greater than that of the induced magnetization, so that the direction of the resultant magnetization points to the top of the bar.

  • In order to predict depth of the pile forward modeling and inversion of magnetic logging data was conducted by using a finite line of dipoles model. The horizontal component as well as the vertical component of magnetic fields can be measured in the borehole, and the magnetic anomalies can be obtained by subtracting the Earth's magnetic field from the measurement. The magnetic anomalies of the pile are considered as vector sum of induced magnetization due to the Earth's magnetic field and remnant magnetization possessed by steel strings in the pile. The magnetic anomalies are used as input data for inversion from which the length, the magnetic moment per unit length, and the dip angle of the pile can be obtained. From the inversion of synthetic noisy data, and the data obtained from the field model test it is found that the driving depth of the pile can be determined as close to the order of measuring interval (5∼10㎝). It is also found that the resultant magnetic anomalies due to an individual steel string in the pile are almost same as those due to a group of steel strings located at the center of the pile. The magnetic logging method also can be used for locating reinforced bars, pipes, and steel casings.

  • Various geophysical methods and geological survey were applied for prospecting of geothermal resources and the attitude of volcanic body at northern part of Kumseongsan, Euiseong. They include magnetic, self-potential, radioactive and resistivity methods, temperature logging near the earth's surface and geological survey. The results of this study are summarized as follows. Various geophysical anomalies is related to the geologically Cretaceous conduit. Anomalies of resistivity and temperature logging seem to be related to the geological structure and terrestrial heat. Small radioactive and self-potential anomalies seem to be associated with chemical character of rocks. The sedimentary rocks dip steeply toward the volcanic rocks, aquifuge. Ideal geological structure for bearing ground water and geothermal resources was founded in the study area. The study area and the adjacent two hot springs area consist of Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and have similar geology.

  • We designed a borehole deviation survey tool applicable for steel-cased holes, K-DEV, and developed a prototype for a depth of 500 m aiming to development of own equipment required to secure deep subsurface characterization technologies. K-DEV is equipped with sensors that provide digital output with verified high performance; moreover, it is also compatible with logging winch systems used in Korea. The K-DEV prototype has a nonmagnetic stainless steel housing with an outer diameter of 48.3 mm, which has been tested in the laboratory for water resistance up to 20 MPa and for durability by running into a 1-km deep borehole. We confirmed the operational stability and data repeatability of the prototype by constantly logging up and down to the depth of 600 m. A high-precision micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope was used for the K-DEV prototype as the gyro sensor, which is crucial for azimuth determination in cased holes. Additionally, we devised an accurate trajectory survey algorithm by employing Unscented Kalman filtering and data fusion for optimization. The borehole test with K-DEV and a commercial logging tool produced sufficiently similar results. Furthermore, the issue of error accumulation due to drift over time of the MEMS gyro was successfully overcome by compensating with stationary measurements for the same attitude at the wellhead before and after logging, as demonstrated by the nearly identical result to the open hole. We believe that the methodology of K-DEV development and operational stability, as well as the data reliability of the prototype, were confirmed through these test applications.

  • In spite of its many strong points, pole-pole electrode configuration is not often used for ground electrical resistivity survey except for bore hole survey as normal logging and for archaeological investigation. Above all, poor spatial resolution of pole-pole survey may be responsible for this. But recent experiences so far gained by the present authers lead them to think that pole-pole survey can be at least a viable means of reconnaissance survey in near-surface conductive environment and an effective interpretational scheme may augment its resolution. As well known, a response of any other electrode configuration is a linear combination of pole-pole responses. Based on this principle of linear superposition and the principle of reciprocity, the other 'responses' can be derived with simple additions and subtractions of pole-pole responses. Though such responses are not always correct due to the adverse effects of noises, combined with the potential decay curves, they can be helpful to interprete better pole-pole survey data especially in connection of the resolution. This can be comparable to the use of the first or second derivatives of gravity and magnetic intensity surveys.
