NCTR(Non-Cooperative Target Recognition) and ATR(Automatic Target Recognition) are methodologies to identify military targets using radar, optical, and infrared images. Among them, a strategy to recognize ground targets using synthetic aperature radar(SAR) images is called SAR ATR. In general, SAR ATR consists of three sequential stages: detection, discrimination and classification. In this paper, a modification of the polar mapping classifier(PMC) to identify inverse SAR(ISAR) images has been made in order to apply it to SAR ATR. In addition, a preprocessing scheme can mitigate the effect from the clutter, and information on the shadow is employed to improve the classification accuracy.
As Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image can be acquired regardless of the weather and day or night, it is highly recommended to be used for Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) in the fields of surveillance, reconnaissance, and national security. However, there are some limitations in terms of cost and operation to build various and vast amounts of target images for the SAR-ATR system. Recently, interest in the development of an ATR system based on simulated SAR images using a target model is increasing. Attributed Scattering Center (ASC) matching and template matching mainly used in SAR-ATR are applied to target classification. The method based on ASC matching was developed by World View Vector (WVV) feature reconstruction and Weighted Bipartite Graph Matching (WBGM). The template matching was carried out by calculating the correlation coefficient between two simulated images reconstructed with adjacent points to each other. For the performance analysis of the two proposed methods, the Synthetic and Measured Paired Labeled Experiment (SAMPLE) dataset was used, which has been recently published by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). We conducted experiments under standard operating conditions, partial target occlusion, and random occlusion. The performance of the ASC matching is generally superior to that of the template matching. Under the standard operating condition, the average recognition rate of the ASC matching is 85.1%, and the rate of the template matching is 74.4%. Also, the ASC matching has less performance variation across 10 targets. The ASC matching performed about 10% higher than the template matching according to the amount of target partial occlusion, and even with 60% random occlusion, the recognition rate was 73.4%.

Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been attracted attention in the fields of surveillance, reconnaissance, and national security due to its advantage of all-weather and day-and-night imaging capabilities. However, there have been some difficulties in automatically identifying targets in real situation due to various observational and environmental conditions. In this paper, ATR problems in Extended Operating Conditions (EOC) were investigated. In particular, we considered partial occlusions of the target (10% to 50%) and differences in the depression angle between training ($17^{\circ}$) and test data ($30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$). To simulate various occlusion conditions, SARBake algorithm was applied to Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) images. The ATR accuracies were evaluated by using the template matching and Adaboost algorithms. Experimental results on the depression angle showed that the target identification rate of the two algorithms decreased by more than 30% from the depression angle of $45^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$. The accuracy of template matching was about 75.88% while Adaboost showed better results with an accuracy of about 86.80%. In the case of partial occlusion, the accuracy of template matching decreased significantly even in the slight occlusion (from 95.77% under no occlusion to 52.69% under 10% occlusion). The Adaboost algorithm showed better performance with an accuracy of 85.16% in no occlusion condition and 68.48% in 10% occlusion condition. Even in the 50% occlusion condition, the Adaboost provided an accuracy of 52.48%, which was much higher than the template matching (less than 30% under 50% occlusion).
Classification of moving targets in Pulse Doppler Radar(PDR) for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes is generally carried out based on listening and training experience of Doppler audio signals by radar operator. In this paper, we proposed the automatic classification method to identify the class of moving target with Doppler audio signals using the Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients(MFCC) and the Hidden Markov Model(HMM) algorithm which are widely used in speech recognition and the classification performance was analyzed and verified by simulations.
NCTR(Non-Cooperative Target Recognition) refers to the function of radar to identify target on its own without support from other systems such as ELINT(ELectronic INTelligence). ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) image is one of the representative methods of NCTR, but it is difficult to automatically classify the target without an identification database due to the significant changes in the image depending on the target's maneuver and location. In this study, we discuss how to build an identification database using simulation and deep-learning technique even when actual images are insufficient. To simulate ISAR images changing with various radar operating environment, A model that generates and learns images through the process named 'Perfect scattering image,' 'Lost scattering image' and 'JEM noise added image' is proposed. And the learning outcomes of this model show that not only simulation images of similar shapes but also actual ISAR images that were first entered can be classified.
Signal frequency lines generated from the acoustic targets are of particular importance for target detection and classification in passive sonar systems. The underwater noise consists of a mixture of ambient noise and radiated noise of targets. Detction of exact signal frequency lines depends on signal detection threshold and variation of ambient noise. In this paper, a detection method of signal frequency lines for acoustic targets using autoassociative memory (ASM) neural network, which is not sensitive to variation of signal detection threshold and ambient noise, is proposed. It is confirmed by simulation and application of real acoustic targets that the proposed method shows good performance for detection of signal frequency lines.

In this paper, we have developed a target recognition algorithm based on a template matching technique using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. For efficient computations, Radon transform-based azimuth estimation algorithm was used with the template matching. MSTAR data set was divided into two groups according to the depression angles, which were a train set and a test set. Template data were generated by rotating and cropping chips which were from MSTAR train set using the azimuth estimation algorithm. Then the template matching process between test data and template data was performed under various conditions. Performance variation according to contrast enhancement preprocessing which is scarce in open literature was also presented. The analysis results show that the target recognition algorithm could be useful for the automatic target recognition using SAR images.

Inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) images represent two-dimensional(2-D) spatial distribution of electromagnetic scattering phenomenology against a target. Hence, they are usually used in the areas of automatic target recognition (ATR) or non-cooperative target recognition(NCTR), identifying a target using radar in a long distance. This paper makes use of Korea Miniature Synthetic Aperture Radar(KOMSAR) to generate ISAR images of a real and maneuvering aircraft. The data obtained from KOMSAR are processed to eliminate phase errors due to motion of a target, with the use of entropy-based ISAR autofocusing technique. Results show that we can successfully obtain ISAR images of a real aircraft, and the success of experiments implies that a significant step toward ATR using radar has been established.
Ship monitoring using satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images consists of ship detection, ship discrimination, and ship classification. A large number of methods have been proposed to improve the detection and discrimination capabilities, while only a few studies exist for ship classification. Thus, many studies for the ship classification are needed to construct ship monitoring system having high performance. Note that constructing database (DB), which contains both SAR images and labels of various ships, is important for research on the ship classification. In the airborne SAR classification, many methods have been developed using moving and stationary target acquisition and recognition (MSTAR) DB. However, there has been no publicly available DB for research on the ship classification using satellite SAR images. Recently, Shanghai Key Laboratory has constructed OpenSARShip DB using both SAR images of various ships generated from Sentinel-1 satellite of European Space Agency (ESA) and automatic identification system (AIS) information. Thus, the applicability of OpenSARShip DB for ship classification should be investigated by using the concepts of airborne SAR classification which have shown high performances. In this study, ship classification using satellite SAR images are conducted by applying the concepts of airborne SAR classification to OpenSARShip DB, and then the applicability of OpenSARShip DB is investigated by analyzing the classification performances.
Passive sonar system is designed to classify the underwater targets by analyzing and comparing the various acoustic characteristics such as signal strength, bandwidth, number of tonals and relationship of tonals from the extracted tonals and frequency lines. First of all the precise detection and extraction of signal frequency lines is of particular importance for enhancing the reliability of target classification. But, the narrowband frequency lines which are the line formed in spectrogram by a tonal of constant frequency in each frame can be detected weakly or discontinuously because of the variation of signal strength and transmission loss in the sea. Also, it is very difficult to detect and extract precisely the signal frequency lines by the complexity of impulsive ambient noise and signal components. In this paper, the automatic detection and extraction method that can detect and extract the signal components of frequency tines precisely are proposed. The proposed method can be applied under the bad conditions with weak signal strength and high ambient noise. It is confirmed by the simulation using real underwater target data.
